When is the rep board/links going to be back, if ever?

Bring back the stats!

It's great for everyone!

 

I have to admit, I never check 'reps' and seldom 'rep' anyone. I just don't think of it as important for me or anyone else. Too easy for anyone to stuff the ballot box. But that's just me, your mileage may vary!

In fact, what do the green boxes by a name mean?

 

All stats should be retained. Why change a good thing?

 

The site administrator disabled several features to try and prevent server crashes and speed up the site. In my experience, and several people I have talked to, it seems to be working. I understand the list of the most recent posts was useful, but its absence really does seem to make the site run faster. I would encourage you to simply subscribe to any threads you think you may be interested in and then you can see the updates in your user PC. You can still give reputation as well, you simply don't have the list at the bottom anymore.


There is a planned upgrade to a newer version of vbulletin coming soon.

5 means you are a glorious beacon of light, when all are filled up that means you have a reputation beyond dispute...at least until you get perma banned...LOL

 

I would very much like to the the rep lists stay.

 

As I understand it, the site owner is a liberal. Was it just too much to bear that the list was dominated by conservatives? That seems to be a logical possibility, especially considering that one of the first things ever said to me on this forum was from a moderator saying "we need more liberals here", or something to that effect.

Why not disable one feature at a time until you discover which one is slowing up the site? Don't throw the baby out with the bath water. The lists may have had nothing to do with the server crashes.

 

OK I asked the wrong question. How does one acquire more [OR LESS?] green squares? I now know that since I'm a Glorious Beacon of Light, that they mean nothing worthwhile.

Clearly, there are more than a few people that like these features. Bring it all back. Different people find different things to be important and/or interesting. Keep em happy.

I disagree completely. It has been my experience the opposite is true. If I am not mistaken I have even repped you. There was that one post that was good.

 

I've repped liberals quite a few times. Sometimes we do agree, or a post is just really well written. They should rep each other more, instead of griping about it. You have to rep other people to get some back, pretty much. I rep a lot of people who never rep me back. That's okay; I'll still rep them.

Also, I like seeing who the top posters are and which threads are hot. I find it interesting and useful.

I say leave them off. They didn't serve their true purpose anyways. I haven't had any problems with the site for the past few days so it looks like turning them off has definitely helped.

Even if the site is upgraded to a new version of vBulletin, unless the db is kept clean and the hardware is shiny and new, stats like that on a large and highly active site are bound to drag the server down requiring more resources than they are worth in the end. It might not show at first but over time, the hit on server resources become very noticeable.

 

I think it is reputation power, IIRC...having to do with how much you receive over a period of time??? But I also know that how many posts you have gives you reputation power too.

 

I don't know the political leanings of the site owner (nor do I care) but I do know that they had nothing to do with the list coming down. The owner simply turned off the stat and link box control while several issues are being worked out. I do not know if or when they are coming back. Right now the owner is having to archive thousands of post to shrink the database, work on updating to a newer version of vbulletin, trying to figure out the exact bugs with addons, and trying to find any other causes of disruptions and crashes.

The notion that there is a political motivation here when a person is working extremely hard to fix the greatest problems of the site is insulting.

 

There is one thing that I feel they could fix and that's the Rep...picking 10 more people to give Reps to is aggrivating. Many times one or more people deserve the reps and I can't give it to them because of the stupid 10 Rep Rule. I can see 1 or 2, but 10? By the time I get back to that person I can no longer find their post and I lose interest and they lose the rep. Anyone else feel this way? It's like we lost the Freedom of Choice...

Yes. And so have other liberals and Democrats. There has never been any proof that anybody is "gaming" the system. The system is the same for everyone who wanted to use it. If you rep a lot and get rep'd a lot, you are likely to be on there. That's the gist of it.

As far as whether or not it comes back has to do ONLY with whether or not it helps to slow down the forum. The administrator will decide. And BTW....whoever it was that said this is a political decision by the owner is way off base. I personally like it because I think it keeps a lot of the....."that's a great post," and "high-five" type comments off the regular posts in the forums. But I could certainly live without it, IF that is the decision eventually.

The rep board gives PF it's unique flavor over other similar boards. I vote to keep it

I'm not a huge fan of reps either and for the same reasons. But, like you, I say bring the stats for those that give a crap. I use the Add to Rep icon just to send a quick "Nice post" or "You suck" to someone without taking up thread space, which still works I think. I also hope the links and other stats return. This WAS a great forum except for the database problems. I guess it still is a great forum - I just liked all the bells and whistles. I'd be willing to pay a fee each month or year if necessary to obtain a really HOT forum. [No - not necessarily HOT in the sense of animations of naked women dancing around my screen - but hey, whatever... ]
