"Thou shalt not approve of slavery" would have been an even better commandment than most all of the 10 offered. But that would mean that Jesus was too stupid to be a prophet because he approved of slavery in the NT. "Treat others as you want to be treated". Another much higher priority than most of the existing 10 commandments. "Thou shalt treat people fairly" (but that would nullify the killing gays wording, or the kill the Amelekites wording, or the women are worth 1/2 a man parts of the Bible, so they can't put that one in.) "Follow the laws of the democracy that you are in". Covers the murder one, and the stealing one, and the false witness one (at least in a court of law it's illegal to lie), and covers things not even mentioned, such as fraud, kidnapping, torture, etc. Much better! Following the laws laid down by non-democratically elected tyrants like Kim Jong-Un, or the Biblical David, are not required, because they have no legitimate right to rule over you. What OTHER better commandments can you put forward? Let's hear from you guys!
Good point. Which ones say "don't approve of slavery"? Which ones say "don't kill people just because they are gay and ignore that parts herein that do say to kill them"? Which ones say "treat women as equal to men, so the parts that say otherwise are dead wrong and not from god"? Which ones say "prioritize provable science over ancient unprovable superstitions"? Which ones say "require jury-level of proof before believing supernatural claims"?
Karma, I assume you believe in democracy, so which ones directly say to pursue democracy, and to not pursue a totalitarian theocracy or a totalitarian monarchy? If they don't, then you got that important point more correct than "god" did. If you believe in democracy, then congratulations on being better than who they believe is the best entity of all time ("god"), that says a lot about you. Democracy is best for humanity, as that's being proven every day around the world. But "god" is too stupid to know that, so he championed totalitarian theocracies and/or totalitarian monarchies. He's an idiot, so therefore clearly not "divine".....i.e. he was just invented by really dumb people who want power.
Your ignorance only seems to be matched by your arrogance. The Bible is a human document that was written for the purpose of trying to understand God. It is not history or science. It is designed to help people identify how to live in a just society. Go and read about what you are spamming the board about. Modern democracy in the post enlightenment world derived much of its philosophical underpinnings from the idea of individual autonomy which evolved out of a new view of Christianity. So to our foundering fathers God was the author of democracy.
It claims to be inspired by an invisible man in the sky, which it clearly is not. God talks to people in the Bible, so they were insane because the just heard voices in their heads. No different than insane asylum inmates hear voices in their heads today. Moses was one of those, and that nut-job killed 3000 innocent people because of the voices in his head....Osama killed slightly less than that, so it's arguable that Moses was more insane than Osama (or at least a bit less dangerous than Moses.)
God/Jesus/Allah are the ignorant ones because those supposedly "all-knowing" fools didn't understand a lick about democracy. They disgust me. YOU know more about democracy than they do, so I value your opinion regarding that important issue (politics) than I value god/Jesus/Allah's opinion. Unless of course you pine to be ruled by a dictator today....do you? I think you're too compassionate for that. A cornerstone of Modern Secular humanism is democracy. A cornerstone of the Christian/Islamic texts is brutal totalitarian rule. ....the choice is clear as to which one is best for world.
Actually it doesn't.... You seem to think that the stories are true stories.....again educate yourself. You are starting to make thoughtful atheists look bad. Seems you don't understand the text.... . Since you seem to just make up what things mean, I am going to assume you support Osama......why do you hate America? - - - Updated - - - What is amazing is that you don't even understand secular humanism.
dont xians claim the bible is the word of god? meantime, howdy FS good to see you back here stirring the pot. dont let the personal shiit stop you.
Hahahahahaha, god the author of democracy? You've got to be kidding! It's the "kingdom of god" isn't it? The "democracy of god"? I don't think so!
"Thou shalt not get worked up over things that really don't matter now as it is bad for thy blood pressure"
Me personally? Nope. But I know someone who did.
Most Christians will not admit that they themselves are indeed more moral and righteous than the God they worship. This much is evident by their lack of ability of answering point blank questions regarding some of the more heinous bits of the Bible.
I'm calling you out here: to be consistent with what you wrote can you say here that the RESURRECTION is, like you claim above for other stories, NOT true? Or is that ONE magical unrealistic story (the resurrection) true, but conveniently all the other stories are not true because they are too problematic and full of holes? Which is it Karma? As a modern Secular Humanist you could be very very consistent. Inconsistency is often a sign there's something wrong with the thought-process. - - - Updated - - - Yes, they are simply BETTER than their god, so no need to worship that SOB. Be your own "god". Have the mental courage to see that you are better than your "god", people.
The Qur'an yes, the Bible not exactly. The Bible was inspired by god they believe, but written by barbaric humans (approved of killing gays, mistreating women, genocide, torture, slavery.....obviously the writers of the Bible were savages.) I'd like to think that I'm too smart to actually believe the magical supernatural claims of people who were so INCREDIBLY STUPID as to think that Ellen D., Elton J., etc. should be slaughtered because they are differently oriented, etc. Incredible.
So, Karma, how much credibility do you give people TODAY who claim to have heard the word of god? You don't give them any....but those people are indistinguishable from the writers of the bible who believed people when they say they heard the word of god. People would be updating the bible when someone today hears the voice of god....but they don't because they are inconsistent and foolish.
We don't need ten. We only need one. Do unto others as you would have others do unto you. That is the hardest one to follow for most so called religious followers. It gets in the way of any religious doctrine used to justify bad behavior, selfishness, self righteousness, bigotry, sexism, racism, religious intolerance and just about every hateful thing people do in the name of some god.
God is not supernatural, the resurrection didn't happen, what else do you want? Again your ignorance is stunning. - - - Updated - - - I don't believe the writers of the Bible "heard the word of God".
What's interesting to me is that the 10 Commandments are divided into basically two groups. The first five are all internal religious matters, which boil down to There is one Boss God, he's the boss, worship the bejeezus out of him. The last 5 are just practical things like don't do unsociable things that are an administrative pain in the arse for the local priesthood to deal with.
I have to chuckle at atheists pipe dreams. Sure create your own commandments as soon as you create a universe....hahaha!
