The Japanese were trying to make an atomic bomb, too

    The Japanese plan was a long shot, but a lot of plans are long shots. They were hoping they might be able to squirm their way into a better arrangement, even if it was looking unlikely. The loss of their last potential hope turned that unlikelihood into an impossibility.

    Jesus Christ, how many times do I have to say that the importance of the Soviets turning hostile to Japan had nothing to do with an actual invasion? The Japanese surrendered then because they knew they no longer had any potential way to negotiate, not because they feared a soviet invasion.

    You're arguing against an argument that I never made.

    Never mind that most of America's brass (including the mad bomber Curtis LeMay) thought nuking Japan was a dastardly act, you know better. "The way things truly are" my white arse.

    Obama's apologetic presence at Hiroshima without stating an apology is enough to add too his apology tour around the world.

    A telling snippet from a lengthy Foreign Policy magazine article.

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    http://foreignpolicy.com/2013/05/30/the-bomb-didnt-beat-japan-stalin-did/
    It didn’t take a military genius to see
    that, while it might be possible to fight
    a decisive battle against one great
    power invading from one direction, it
    would not be possible to fight off two
    great powers attacking from two
    different directions. The Soviet
    invasion invalidated the military’s
    decisive battle strategy, just as it
    invalidated the diplomatic strategy. At
    a single stroke, all of Japan’s options
    evaporated. The Soviet invasion was
    strategically decisive —it foreclosed
    both of Japan’s options —while the
    bombing of Hiroshima (which
    foreclosed neither) was not.
    The Soviet declaration of war also
    changed the calculation of how much
    time was left for maneuver. Japanese
    intelligence was predicting that U.S.
    forces might not invade for months.
    Soviet forces, on the other hand, could
    be in Japan proper in as little as 10
    days. The Soviet invasion made a
    decision on ending the war extremely
    time sensitive.
    And Japan’s leaders had reached this
    conclusion some months earlier. In a
    meeting of the Supreme Council in
    June 1945, they said that Soviet entry
    into the war “would determine the fate
    of the Empire.” Army Deputy Chief of
    Staff Kawabe said, in that same
    meeting, “The absolute maintenance of
    peace in our relations with the Soviet
    Union is imperative for the
    continuation of the war.”
    The Riken lab was burned down by American air raids in 1945 and the separator and other important research materials were lost. Korea was a Japanese colony at the time but there is no historical record to back up the article's claim that some cyclotrons were moved to Korea. Sumitomo was not directly involved in the secret nuclear programme and after the end of the war, Allied soldiers destroyed two cyclotrons that they found in Tokyo. Japanese physicists were smart enough to understand nuclear fission in theory but Riken was nowhere near achieving a schematic nuclear fission chain reaction in 1945 mainly due to the lack of funding and resources. But had it been operational, Riken could have detonated the first bomb by 1955.
    Japan's A-Bomb project
    https://sites.google.com/site/naziabomb/home/japan-s-a-bomb-project
    David Snell reported that Kempetai Captain Tsetusuo Wakabayashi told him the test occured just after Hiroshima was bombed. Wilcox gives an account from Snell that on 10 August 1945 an Atomic bomb was removed from a cave above Konan, transported to a robot launch. It is reported that at dawn 12 August 1945 the launch carrying the A-bomb device called Genzai Bakudan beached itself on a tiny island in the sea of Japan. The location of these islets is north of Wonsan in the Gulf of Yonghung-Man. Unfortunately the name of the individual island where the test occurred is not recorded.
    It is known that a Japanese plan for an Atomic Bomb was drawn up in July 1943 and came into possession of the OSS.
    I don't know how authentic the website is but this paragraph is historically accurate.
    A Thorium refinery at Konan in North Korea was captured by the Soviets in 1945. There was a cyclotron for harvesting Protactinium 233 on a hill nearby. The Soviets shipped out cases of Uranium 233 by submarine after a railway was built to Vladivostok in the post-war era, using the renovated facility. This is disclosed by the declassified letters of General Shytkov to Stalin 1945-1948.
    But, but, but when the Japanese imperialists actually developed the bomb they would not have actually used it because they were so peaceful, kind, and loving. Only the evil imperialist Americans were vicious enough to actually use the bomb. Americans = bad. All others = good.
    My point is the Japanese were well aware they had lost the war before considering the Soviet issue.
    They were, and that's why their concern with the soviets revolved around finding a way to surrender and still keep their conquered territory.
    But I'm thanking you for the term 'apology tour.' You guys crack me up. You know, it's possible to oppose Obama without being stupid. I'm not crazy about the prez, never voted for him, but I don't need to go ape(*)(*)(*)(*) insane over him. Not an emotional thing with me, I guess.
    Didn't you already make a fool of yourself one time on here already by claiming Obama didn't or wasn't going to visit pearl Harbor? I think the answer is yes. It was in 2011. You also made a fool of yourself claiming there was an apology by Obama when touring Japan, when you never proved there was an apology. I guess I just have two questions; do you live to tell tall tales after being proven a fabricator, and, is the hate so bad that you have to make yourself into a fool, all over again, just so you can repeat those same fabrications?
    To state that the soviet invasion was the final nail in the coffin is history revisionism at best. The Japanese home islands were cut off from their Far East territories long before the Soviets acted, so there loss was irrelevant. Even after the Soviets invaded, and two atomic bombs, Hirohito's council the " Big 6" were deadlocked along civilian, and military camps. After more debate, and a attempted military coup,maths Emporer finally agreed to surrender on the 15th of August.
    So to say the that after the Soviet intervention the Japanese just threw up their hands due the hopelessness of the situation, and the Atomic bombings weren't needed to decide the outcome is nonsense. The Japanese were still trying to save their own necks, and some territorial possessions up until the last moment that the Emporor called it quits, and made his public broadcast of surrender to the Japanese public.
    I stand corrected. Yes!! Obama is known to have visited the Arizona Memorial twice. Once as Senator in 2008 when he vacationed in Hawaii and once again in 2011 again in passing when he was vacationing in Hawaii as president. I should have been more accurate in my statements.
    Again....the Soviet's had absolutely no possible way to invade Japan.
    They did not even have the ships necessary to carry their troops to island hop.
    Ha, when you're vacationing, who wants to interrupt a vacation to visit a memorial right? But some have done it. Oh, and I almost forgot, enjoy your hate filled day.
    The unconditional surrender demand by the U.S. and it's allies would not allow them to keep conquered territory. Their loss included. After the Surrender in September 1945 Japan lost the following:
    Ryukyu Islands -- 1609-1945
    Bonin Islands -- 1862-1945 & since 1968
    Kuril Islands -- 1875-1945
    Volcano Islands -- 1891-1945 & since 1968
    Taiwan -- 1895-1945
    Minami-Tori-shima -- 1898-1945 & since 1968
    South Karafuto (Sakhalin) -- 1905-1945
    Kwantung Leased Territory -- 1905-1945
    Korea -- 1910-1945
    South Pacific Mandate -- 1914-1945
    Shandong - formerly of German Empire - 1914-1922
    Okinotorishima - 1931-1945 & since 1968
    Because the Soviets turned hostile to Japan, taking their last avenue to keep their conquered territory and prompting the surrender of the Japanese Empire.
    That's what I've been trying to communicate this entire thread.
    - - - Updated - - -
    I don't know why you're bringing this up. Are you under the impression that I believe that the Japanese plan for a conditional surrender to the soviets actually happened?
