I grew up in the SF Bay area much of my early life and when we moved across the street from the then Sakai Nursery, I met American Japanese. As a youth, I was well aware of WW2 but at the time had no hang up against Japanese at all. Even my Mom was friendly to those. But Japanese tried hard to kill my uncle in WW2.

Even in school teachers never exposed we then kids to history of that era much at all.

I did not know about the USA laws banning Japanese citizens from buying property in the USA. Said law originated, I believe, in the 1920s.

I did not know FDR had locked up in POW camps, hundreds of thousands of loyal Japanese.

Turns out once a person whose parents were from Japan became an adult, they could have their names on the title of real estate. Similar to the current illegals from Mexico.

So i did not know how some of the Japanese I met in High school owned property. I was schooled in the mistreatment of the Japanese by a Japanese buddy but well past when we both graduated from high school.

I am well aware of discrimination vs Japanese. As a child, we heard of disparaging words used against those other groups too. So it's not a new event and I suggest this nation could simply stop talking like that.

 

Trump best not stomp on the rights of peaceful Muslims in the USA.

The people will defend them.

We should have defended the Japanese Americans, but we failed. As did the Canadians.

But now we are much more committed to tolerance, freedom, liberty.

They only allowed in white people, they had to pass medical inspection, any could be summarily turned back with no appeal, and there was absolutely no social programs assisting them whatsoever. Instead they had to find a Democratic Party boss who assigned them to their ethnic slum and the sweatshop they and there children were to work in, plus pay their fees/bribes. Otherwise they and their children could starve to death.

So... any of you advocate returning to those good old Statute Of Liberty days when only white people could come into the USA, all social programs of any kind are eliminated for everyone, minimum wage and all worker and child protective labor laws eliminated? If so, speak up.

We were in a war for fundamental national survival. I have no problem with the internment camps. I do have a problem with their property being stolen when they were.

Speaking of the poem in the Statue of Liberty ... I regret that I do not recall it at all. This might be due to the statue at that moment being repaired.

When they cut out a piece of it to quote, you lose the context of the entire poem.

We as a nation need not pat ourselves so hard on our backs. This country has pointed guns at people to keep them out.

I realize virtually 100 percent of the Japanese so locked up were total innocents. I had buddies that had been locked up by FDR.
