Have you ever done anything that could embarrass you or the party?”

The standard questionnaire put before the novice New Democratic Party candidate made Lenore Zann laugh.

In 2009, at the start of her political career as a three-time provincial NDP MLA, representing the constituency of Truro/Biblehill/Millbrook/Salmon River, Zann was a left-of-centre recovering alcoholic, charismatic actress and twice divorced. Typing her name into Google popped up frozen images from the myriad of film and television programs she’d acted in over the years.

“It doesn’t embarrass me personally, but anyone wanting to attack me politically probably thought they’d hit the motherload,” she says.

Three hours after then-party leader Darrell Dexter announced Zann’s candidacy at a Truro luncheon, the Liberal party sourced a racy picture of Zann, taken out of context, from behind a pay wall. The love-scene snap from the gay cable drama The L Word was sent to the CBC supper hour news, which chose to run with it.

The ensuing media hoopla was Zann’s baptism by fire, she says, her welcome into the Nova Scotian political arena. Would a nude picture of a male political candidate have made the news? Unlikely, she says.

“This sort of thing only creates disillusionment in the public,” says former federal and provincial NDP leader Alexa McDonough, who has known Zann since she was a child. Eventually the party leader offered to apologize, McDonough says, but Zann put him off, saying she would accept his apology in the House, if he got elected. “Have you ever seen such chutzpah?” McDonough asks.

Dexter and the NPD stood by Zann. “The attention gave me a soap box from which to ask the question: What is wrong with depictions of naked bodies in art or in the media?” she says. “By the time they are eight years old, the average child has seen 6,000 murders, rapes and shootings on television.”

She adds, “Which is more destructive?”

Truro agreed, and stood up for their hometown girl. Zann won the riding not once, but three times in a row.

“My passions have always been politics, arts, drama environment, and travel,” says Zann. “I grew up in a political family and from a very young age I was interested in social activism. And,” she adds, “I have always been aware of misogyny and the abuse of men trying to humiliate and control women. I don’t like it. Who would?”

In her 20s, Zann worked at stage or film and TV jobs and then bolted, travelling to other countries to absorb their political systems, cultures and spirituality traditions.

“When I was 24 I lived as a musician in Cuba for nine months, selling everything I had to remain there for as long as I could, right down to my watch,” she says. Cubans were aware the world mocked their old cars and shoddy buildings, says Zann, but one of Castro’s popular mantras — ‘First comes penicillin, then comes paint’ — resulted in a society with universal health care and education systems envied by all.

Later, Zann travelled to Stockholm in a stage production, allowing her to live there for a year.

“There was guaranteed income for everyone in Sweden, universal health care, free day care and free post-secondary education,” she says. “They pay higher taxes in Sweden than we do, but earn much higher wages. And,” she adds, “people live with less anxiety about the future there, and are healthier than we are overall.”

At age 36 with a jet-setting career, Zann realized she had a problem with alcohol. She got sober and entered a period of self-reflection and recovery. At 40 she wrote herself a stage show about one of her idols, Marilyn Monroe, a self-punishing addict, called The Marilyn Tapes.

“On the one hand The Marilyn Tapes was a political play set in the McCarthy era, written 20 years ago, during the time when George W. Bush was gearing up for war,” says Zann. “I realized even then that just saying you stood for peace was a radical political act.”

The play was also about the difficult journey of learning to accept who you are and to love yourself, Zann says.

“It’s a deeply personal, feminist work about a little-understood woman, the iconic Marilyn Monroe.”

Zann says Monroe was an innovative artist trapped inside a dumb blond persona, typecast by agents and film directors alike. Shades of autobiography perhaps?

Zann shares the anecdote about how Monroe helped her fiance, playwright Arthur Miller, when he was being accused of un-American activities by Senator Joseph McCarthy. Monroe cleverly publicly responded, “A communist is for the people, right? I’m for the people. Arthur is for me.”

The Marilyn Tapes successfully premiered at Neptune Theatre in 2003. Zann took it to New York City, where it played off Broadway for an entire year, during which the successful writer and actress was becoming aware of a deep yearning to return home to Nova Scotia.

“I could feel that my interest in politics was taking over from my interest in acting and reading scripts,” she says. “I wanted to do more. I wanted to make a greater difference in the world, in a directly political way.”

Eventually, she decided to sell her out-of-province properties, bought a house in Truro and began volunteering, dedicating herself to empowering young artists — particularly young women — in the area.

Inevitably, with her family’s NDP connections, the party came calling. Zann consulted with her friend and mentor, McDonough, who told her, “It’s your time. I’m stepping down and we need you to step up.”

“I always knew Lenore would be something in the political arena if she chose to do it,” McDonough says. “It’s a rough and tumble business, but I knew that once she got elected, she’d be able to choose her own exit.”

After she was elected for a second term in 2013, a nasty cyber bullying incident happened when an 18 year-old male student tweeted a topless picture of her.

“I refuse to be a victim,” says Zann, who turned the cyberbullying incident into a teaching opportunity.

“I said ‘you can attack me for my politics but don’t attack me for my personal choices, for my sexuality. I live alone. I am a woman first. I am not my job. I don’t deserve this. That is harassment. That is abuse.’”

Zann says she will always fight for victims of injustice. She has stood in solidarity with historically marginalized women’s groups, and Indigenous and African-Nova Scotian communities taking stands on contentious issues in the province.

Many see her as a flawed person with nothing left to hide, and, therefore, someone not likely to judge them or their problems, which works in her favour.

Cut to the present: post Jian Ghomeshi; post Harvey Weinstein; post #MeToo campaign.

Zann says she is thankful the old boys club attitude of entitlement — within the legislature and within Hollywood circles — is finally being challenged.

“There will be growing pains,” she says, “but the 21st century is no place for these dusty old attitudes to reign supreme.” She adds, “That’s why #TimesUp.”

Some say that institutionalized patriarchy is quivering in fear. Media moguls and politicians at all levels of government, powerful men accused of various sexual transgressions, are dropping out of public view weekly. Others are concerned with the speed with which one accusation can ruin a long career, implying that today’s so-called feminist witch hunt is no different than the political feeding frenzy of the McCarthy era.

“I highly doubt that the companies, or political parties to which the powerful men now toppling like dominoes belong would simply remove the man from his position or ask him to resign,” says Zann, “unless they believe the woman, have seen or heard enough proof of the allegation to see the truth or have been aiding and abetting his behaviour for some time. They are likely afraid if they don’t cut him loose they will lose more than just their CEO, star actor, or political leader.”

Zann is quick to say that while she believes in the rule of law when it comes to these cases, it is not the public who is deciding who should be fired or who should resign, it is the powerful institutions for whom they work. “And that says a lot,” she adds.

Within this tumultuous climate however, women are still being criticized for having waited too long — decades in some cases — before stepping forward to make accusations after suffering a humiliating assault or being raped.

Recently, while working on anti-sexism legislation in the house, Zann suddenly realized that she was one of those women.

“During my time as an actress in Hollywood, I was assaulted by an agent who held tremendous power over my career. Before that, at 19, I was also sexually assaulted by a director,” Zann says, “and that doesn’t even include suffering untold degrees of generalized abuse over many years in the business.”

Zann says she buried the memories of the assaults, the abuse she felt she couldn’t do anything about at the time.

“Coming forward is important,” Zann says. “It can take years to admit to yourself that you were a victim of abuse, as I was. As I did. I was in my political body that day in the house, but then I suddenly realized, from the point of view of having been an abused woman, I needed to say something.”

The political resignations last month give Zann hope that things are finally changing, she says, that the behaviour of those who take advantage of others in the workplace will no longer be tolerated.

“Men who have used the power of their position within an organization to force others to do something against their will create a toxic, unhealthy and dysfunctional working environment.”

“There is no place for discrimination, sexual assault, harassment, intimidation or bullying of any kind in the workplace,’ says Zann. “Any workplace. So it is imperative to support those who come forward with complaints and take their allegations seriously.”

Zann is convinced that in order to create sustained societal changes we need to continue to encourage more women to run for office, as she has done.

“Intersectionality is also vital,” she says. “Embracing diversity is more important than ever. While it may take some adjustment at first, with some discordant notes the diversity of many women’s voices harmonizing together is the most important ingredient needed to create a more peaceful and truly just society.”

Adds McDonough: “The women’s movement is no more divided than it ever was. I blame the advent of television in the political arena, which has not been there long. There is so much media focus on conflicts, controversy, sensationalism, which makes it a cheap ride and is not at all helpful or healthy.”

In Nova Scotia, only 17 out of 51 ridings have female MLAs whereas, not surprisingly, in Scandinavian countries like Sweden, gender equality in the political sphere runs higher than a third.

Currently Zann is the NDP spokesperson for five portfolios: Status of Women, Environment, Advanced Education, Aboriginal Affairs and Agriculture.

To inspire more women to enter politics at a recent women’s march at City Hall in January, Zann and members of a Truro youth group held up a banner that read, A Woman’s Home . . . is in the Legislature.

Zann’s predictions for the future? Women will soon be fighting harder for equal pay legislation in the province.

It’s not likely that Zann will need to step down any time soon for reasons of sexual impropriety.

“No kidding!” says McDonough. “What a disgrace.”

A male political colleague recently asked Zann when she was going to cut her hair, because women of a certain age should keep their hair short, implying that politicians should be more demure.

“I just looked at him and said, I don’t think so!” says Zann. “Like any actress worth their salt, I refuse to take bad direction.”

I would so love to be wrong.........
I am really hoping that there is some detail or principle that I have overlooked that
proves that I am being kind of paranoid and silly to worry about this but........

I do......

I am worried that many residents of low lying areas of Truro, N. S. are in the position of
the proverbial "canary in a coal mine" when it comes to the threat or rising ocean levels......

........ I have a question on basic physics that I believe you can turn
into a mission in life.

In my part of Nova Scotia, Guysborough County near Sherbrooke, the difference from
low tide to high tide isn't much more than one meter.

As you know extremely well........ in parts of your riding the difference from low tide to high tide is around FIFTEEN
meters.

My question is.......... if a significant amount of cracking and sliding of ice on the West Antarctic
Ice Sheet were to occur...... and if average ocean levels were to rise by one meter...... would the
difference along part of the Bay of Fundy continue to have a FACTOR OF 15 X?

Would a one meter rise in average ocean levels translate into another fifteen meters added to high tide
due to the funneling effect that the Bay of Fundy has on the tidal waters as it comes in???????

I don't know the answer to this question.

I am hoping that there is some other factor that would lessen the
multiplier effect on high tides in parts of your riding........... but the
question needs to be asked...... because my online friend Mr. Carl Cantrell
gave me an alternative theory on how to address climate stabilization that
has the side benefit of also directly addressing the threat of rising ocean levels.

Obviously every cubic meter of ocean water that is desalinated and added to the
water table of Israel, Jordan, Qatar, Tunisia, California, Saudi Arabia, Australia or any
other nation with lots of desert is good news for people whose homes are along the Bay of Fundy.

The nation of Israel has experienced COOLING in their climate since the 1950's
and coincidentally........ . on a per capita basis, with the possible exception of China
they led the world in the sheer number of trees planted PLUS large scale
desalination of ocean water for agriculture, reforestation projects and for towns
and cities experiencing water shortages.

Theoretically...... large scale desalination of ocean water could be financed by a new
proposed currency note...... that would not necessarily have to be backed up by
debt.....(or at least not a type of debt as we usually create when money is put into the economy)!

My belief is that all that dysfunction we so frequently see in politics stems from the fact that our current system is inherently set up to favor the existence of two, and only two, major parties. Aspirations of independents/third or fourth parties having significant say or representation, are quickly snuffed out by the realities of our election processes. Moderation between the two so called 'main' or 'major' parties is quickly becoming a thing of the past. Since they are each essentially in a position such as to be unchallenged/unchalleng-able by anyone else they are incentivized to endlessly demonize one another to win elections rather than focusing more on convincing the voters of why it is that their policies are what the country needs. Successfully sliming the other party in this case, leaves voters only one other realistic choice, so mud slinging and fervent demonization has unfortunately become a characteristic staple of politics. And that demonization and more often than not unnecessary mud-slinging really only acts to make it that much more difficult for sides to come together in compromise when it comes time to do so.

And no, the perpetual dominance of these two parties over everything else, and the increasing un-moderated division between the two, is not merely because American voters want it that way. If Americans actually wanted what we have now, one would think we wouldn't be seeing declining rate of confidence nation-wide as the parties continue to become ever more polarized.

There is a reason for why Washington and other founding fathers warned against two-party politics...and I believe we are seeing it now.

And yet, despite our seemingly clear desire for a better, more functional, government...
time and again we as citizens have chosen the same types of politicians, from the same two parties which have failed us in the past. I believe there are a number of reasons for this, not the least of which being campaign finance related issues, and media coverage. But the most impactful reason in my opinion by far, is encapsulated by a simple question that any voter might ask themselves when they walk into that voting booth and have to make a choice between three or more candidates...

"Do I vote for who I like/who I think will do the best job....or do I vote for who I think can win?"

Some might jump to blame the voter themselves for whatever option they might choose.
But the way I see it, the very fact that anyone ever has to even ask themselves such a question is a serious flaw in and of itself, and is the key factor in our system which leads our country to the current two-party duopoly that many of us so despise. In fact, its so bad, that the mere existence of this sort of quandary can prevent a lot of the better and or more moderate candidates from running at all, as they too have to ask themselves a similar question when making such decisions.

But the path to breaking up that caustic two-party duopoly is not really all that complicated when you think about it. All we really need to do...is to make things fair for third parties by, again, immediately Dumping FPP Plurality Voting!...and instituting a Ranked Voting system in its place...

Doing so makes it possible for a popular third party to have substantial say in government,
and that would naturally tend to decrease division over time by forcing compromise, cooperation, and ultimately moderation. Its very presence as a meaningful force in congress would give lie to the binary thinking we currently see in Washington. And when voters are no longer forced to pick between extremes, It will lead to the re-emergence of a much needed middle-ground.

As it is now though, the rift between the two major parties is so wide and empty,
that to disagree with one side is to automatically agree with the other, to agree with one is to disavow the other. Or so the saying goes. This sort of false dichotomy is not healthy for a democracy. What we want, or should want, is to give voters more options. Having viable independents/third/fourth/fifth parties is particularly useful in cases where both of the current major parties are disliked. But please please please do note that the current non-viability of such candidates is not simply due to a lack of effort on their part; no, the system itself is inherently stacked against such candidates in an unfair way due to the booth question I mentioned earlier.

If we change the system to actually give third parties etc. a fair shot, it would force the two current parties to moderate... either shift their policies to better reflect what the people actually need and want...or, if they cannot, disappear and be replaced by a third party that can. In fact, the whole idea of representative democracy is that we're supposed to be able to replace representatives that are not working out... if the system as we have it set up, does not allow for us to efficiently replace our representatives or the parties in power when they are no longer liked...then it is the system itself that needs to be replaced.

And I know what some of you might be saying... having a third or fourth party, on par with the current two parties, might make for a more difficult choice for voters to make as they head off to the polls. And I would definitely agree that it is easier to choose between two options than it is to choose between three or more, But artificially limiting the number of options one can choose from also removes from them a certain amount of agency... agency which I personally would prefer to keep, for to remove it is to end up with scenarios where for, e.g. voters are forced into choosing between two options neither of which are liked (no one wants that). Its where the whole lesser evil thing comes in. Or to put it another way, if you were going to take your friends out for ice-cream, all else being equal, would you take them out to the shop boasting a full range of flavors, or would you take them to the one that only had vanilla and chocolate?

Which is why I say again, we need to send FPP Plurality Voting straight to the trash-heap of history where it belongs! and institute a Ranked Voting system in its place...

I seriously cannot stress enough just how bad our chosen FPP Plurality election method is for deciding anything other than a genuine two-choice inquiry. Its basically one of the worst options out there as far as it comes to enabling voters to voice their desires. But to really understand why, I believe that we also need to again get past this habit of binary thinking and understand/acknowledge the fact that there are often more than a mere two options for any given referendum. To our detriment, we artificially limit ourselves when we ignore that fact or insist upon using a system which is unable to fairly accommodate people choosing what they want from among all of the options, without having to risk inadvertently increasing the chance of getting something they favor the least.

Really, about the only advantage that FPP Plurality has is its simplicity.
And while simplicity can be a good thing, over-simplicity is not. As a famous person of history once said, "Everything should be made as simple as possible, but not simpler". And while it may have at one time made sense to use FPP Plurality, back when the whole idea of democracy was fairly new, and no one really quite knew how it would all work out, I believe the issues we face today have shifted to such a degree that FPP Plurality voting is now far too simple for the job we need it for.

...So what does that leave us with?...
It turns out, there are plenty of other options out there. Below are only a few.
Some work better for certain types of votes. Pretty much all of them would be better than what we have.

Instant Runoff - This method allows for multi-candidate elections while significantly reducing the chances of things like spoiler candidates or tactical voting. And when I say significant...I mean that there is almost no chance of those issues occurring under this system. Imagine an election but with a runoff vote, well this is basically that multiple times except you only have to poll the voters once. This method also gets props for being very easy to understand.

Ranked Pairs (or other Condorcet method) - this method is slightly more complex than instant runoff, but its advantage is that its essentially the 'perfect' method, if our measure of perfection is simply the ridding of spoiler candidates and tactical voting,
as it is literally impossible for those issues to occur under this method. By definition a Condorcet method is one in which the winner of the tally would always beat out any other option in a one on one election (assuming such a winner exists).

Approval Voting - In my opinion, this (non-ranked) method isn't the best one for contests in which there can be only one winner, though its popular in some circles for that purpose. Where it shines above the other methods imo though is in multi-option referendum type votes where more than one 'winner' option can be chosen. Voters here pretty much just say whether or not they approve of options, (they can approve of how ever many they want), and options which receive over a certain percentage of approval (say, 50%) or the top (x)# can be implemented or instated. It is simple, and can be used by itself or in combination with the other two for certain votes.

Implement any one of those, and not only will you see our politicians begin to moderate and function more effectively, I believe that even the voters themselves will change for the better as they are forced to think more about the choices they make come election-time and will be less inclined, hopefully, to always think of things in terms of black and white.

Now, I don't expect changes like these to happen soon/overnight, or to occur without ample further debate. But its high time that we as citizens at least get the conversation going on this and start to spread awareness that there are significantly better alternatives than what we have. We have the technology to do this...we now need only inform our fellow citizens and generate the political will.

To help us out, I'm going to be putting together a few, special polls/'Demonstration' votes, to illustrate how the alternative methods work in practice, and how they compare to the antiquated FPP Plurality method. I'll start with something simple, uncontentious, inoffensive, inconsequential, and noncontroversial just to demonstrate the concepts. Then I'll move onto actual political topics, and eventually, maybe even a vote on the election methods themselves once I'm sure folks have a good understanding of them.

"Well from an engineering point of view if it was a sure thing and time would allow the answer is not going to be try to air condition the Antarctic. I would think in terms of cutting a relief channel. That would be between Sackville and Amherst would be to excavate a canal that would only start to receive water when the tide is up approximately the half of normal height and this canal would have to continue sloping down and terminate in the Gulf of St. Lawrence across from PEI.

No doubt such an undertaking would get bad reviews from a lot of environmentalist but it could save some of the low level human habitation on the banks of the Bay of Fundy. When I visited the area I remember on the N.B. side that there was a lot of high ground as you went inland from the shore of the Bay.

Another approach would be to think like the Seaway Project where Cardinal and Morrisburg and lots of farms and places on the Canadian side of the St. Lawrence were moved and the land flooded with the power dam near Cornwall. The idea with Fundy would in the energy extraction view would be to tell all the low land people to hit it, your property is ruined. At the sea entrance somewhere more in the direction toward St. John to create a one way valve type mechanism. Let the tide water come rushing and don't let it leave right away. When the tide forces have receded then release the water through turbines to generate electricity. From half tide to low tide and back to just coming back again all the stored water has to be used. It might also be possible to get some energy out of the water when it is rushing in at high tide.

I'm sure some high math and some good engineers could get the greatest benefit possible from conditions we otherwise cannot control. Also do not give up on the earth getting ever hotter as it may well be cooling for a while before us. All the end of world alarmist like Paul Ehrlich and the peak oil we would be burning camel dung by 1999 alarmist have all failed miserably in their predictions. The big problem with all of them is that they are trying to tell us something about the future. Conservative minded people know the secret, if you want to predict the future get out in front of it and do something to shape the future with your own hands.

Yes.... .what I am proposing is a multi-national plan for large scale desalination of ocean water that in theory could eventually put a similar amount of desalinated water into the water table of nations with lots of desert as is cracking and sliding off the West Antarctic Ice Sheet, Greenland and the world's land based glaciers.
