    http://www.johnstonsarchive.net/nuclear/nuclearwar1.html

A fascinating study of the effects of global thermonuclear war and far more realistic than what any news source or film will ever portray.

It's a pretty nasty read but well worth the effort.

Glad we haven't had a nuclear war would suck.

I remember someone once asked "what does the Army do when there's no war?"

Answer: "Cleans trucks, just like a fire department does when there is no fire." LOL

I also recall Eisenhower said the purpose of the US Interstate system and it curves of it are designed to allow military vehicles to travel 100 mph per hour from coast to coast.

When has the Army ever made a vehicle that can go 100 mph?

By 1988, there’s no ****ing way the Soviets can come close to winning any conventional fight against NATO. It wouldn’t be NATO deploying nuke first.

This was originally written in 1985 (First edition) well before the USSR fell when they did indeed have a larger army. (Although decrepit)

The reason why the Interstate highways have a medium are for military tracked vehicles.

One way looking at it, no Adolph Hitler there would be no Volkswagens and no American Interstate Highway System (National Defence Highways System)

Was NATO around in the days of the USSR? If you mean the Russians, don't make the mistake of underestimating them - they have form for spectacular military successes, which, bearing in mind Vietnam, Iraq and Afghanistan, is more than can be said for the US military? Remember the tale of the hare and the tortoise? Keep it in mind, and don't mess with Russia.

NATO are left no choice but to launch first, Russia has attack nuclear weapon depots and then attacked the US satellites they would also know the soviets are moving the population to bomb shelters.

The signs are there that the USSR is about to launch a full first strike.

Even by 1985, it’s questionable. NATO’s real game changer weapons had reached full deployment by then.

The Soviet Union in 1988 was a shadow of its former self. There’s no way it could win a war against NATO, which was at its peak.

My first experience with a nuclear WWIII scenario was as a military dependent in Germany during the Cuban missile crisis. My dad was an armored platoon commander and ready to roll east to the Fulda Gap while my mom had our bags packed and was ready to run for the coast with the other families should war break out. Since then I've been a bit of a survivalist and learned a lot of survival skills, which are mostly woodsman/hunting/hiking skills. I also read a lot of books on the subject plus apocalyptic SF novels like "On the Beach", "A Canticle for Leibowitz ", "A Mote in God's Eye", etc.

It only would have went to nuclear warfare in 1988 if the Soviets went there first. In a conventional fight, NATO would have blunted any Soviet Attack into Western Europe and then rolled east.

The scenario would be the same as if the Arabs attacked Israel after she had nukes. It'd start out conventionally then, if it looked like they were going to be overrun, they'd go nuclear. We had the same scenarios for a Soviet conventional attack. If losing conventionally, we'd have started with tactical nukes. Little John being one tool. Additionally, most military strategists thought the most likely scenario for initiating a nuclear war would be at sea. Either way, once started it would either escalate or the attacker (the ****ing Russians) would retreat and admit defeat.

NATO wouldn’t be losing conventionally from anytime after about mid-1985.
