I do not believe Americans should die to protect Walmart profits. You do

What were our combat pilots supposed to fly? And don't start prattling about drones.

Why not? Hundreds of millions of Americans benefit directly from Walmart. Don't they matter?

I'll prattle as much as I like, thank you. The million dollar resources we call combat pilots are supposed to fly VR screens from comfortable bunkers in Arizona, not super dangerous and expensive machines where they have to wear gravity suits so the actual flying doesn't kill them. Given the level of control modern robotics can give us over airplanes I really can't figure why we intend on continuing to have piloted combat aircraft at all, let alone are developing a whole new line of them. And please don't prattle on about "man in the loop" and other things "only" men can do. The fact of the matter is that with fly-by-wire and digital avionics we have had robotic planes for several years now, The controller is in the ultra dangerous cockpit not the safe and comfortable bunker a thousand miles away, that is the only difference. Well, that and the fact that air combat with drones risks only a few million dollars of hardware, not several million dollars more of hardware and some gold star family's pride and joy and entire reason for living besides

Aircraft are still superior to drones at this point and time and are not as "discriminant" as drones. Pilots and their aircraft have more flexibility right now and are still essential to the overall mission of the USAF and the Navy. Drones and Unmanned Aircraft are currently gaining momentum and very well could replace fighters in combat. In fact, I am sure they will at some point. Currently, U.S. Air Force pilots training to fly drones outnumber those training to fly piloted aircraft.

Sometimes it's not all about having the technology but about having the proper application as well.

As an expert on the subject said in Foreign Policy magazine a few years ago.

"In a real war, drones would be falling out of the sky like confetti".

Communications links with drones can inevitably (and will be jammed).

And the first time an autonomous drone incinerates a refugee column because it mistakes it for a column of enemy armor is the last time they'll be used.

Compared to piloted planes drones cost about as much as confetti, and can you imagine a sky full of confetti that is lethal

Even the avionics in piloted planes can be jammed now, I understand, and no human can possibly fly modern stealth aircraft "seat of the pants". You shield and unjam that's how war works nowadays. And piloted planes have mistaken refugees for enemy armor since WWII and will thereafter. There's another good reason to get rid wars entirely, yes?

Agree to disagree. War is terrible but not always the worst possible thing. As long as there are people alive on Earth there will be wars.

.... and that part I bolded might be exactly the problem this time. However, I remain the hopeless fool, as always. We've gotten rid of bad things before, indeed that's the whole story of mankind; and I think the tale will continue

Excellent point. One of the main reasons they haven't replaced aircraft at this point.

The first and foremost job of the Federal Government is defense. Unfortunately, the Fed. Gov. has overstepped its bounds by formation of the Dept. of Education, Consumer Protection Agency, Health Insurance, and sticking its nose in other World Governments; including stationing troops in Countries where they are not needed.
I have worked in Health Care for over 35 years and my husband, a surgeon, has been in practice for the same. Obamacare as written didn't stand a chance of reducing health insurance premiums because that was not it's purpose. The Dems promised health insurers subsidies if they provided coverage under Obamacare plans and lost money. We were promised full disclosure regarding what was covered medically, what providers we could see and affordable premiums not based on pre-existing conditions, age or sex. None of this happened. And nothing changed for small group health insurance.

You don't have the education or experience in the medical administration field to be accusing moderates and Republicans of things you have.

Maybe, but I wasn't accusing moderates or Republicans. I accuse the entire political class of America no matter what it's complexion.

Perhaps you can enlighten me on something which I've been wondering about for a long time (I'm a Brit by the way, just in case I forget to mention it later in this post lol) and it's this: you may or not know that our NHS is funded by a deduction from all salaries by what's called the National Insurance contribution, and until recently it (meaning the NHS, not the NI contribution) has worked well, and even now it's (obviously) better than nothing. So my question is - why couldn't the same system work in the US? If you reply please keep it short and simple because I'm not the sharpest knife in the block.

PS And I think from all pension payments too, whether they're state or private pensions.

Mistakes happen. But you can't really blame pilots for attacking ground targets if they are firing automatic weapons (a common celebratory practice in the Middle East).

What would American law enforcement officers do if they came upon a gathering of people and saw automatic weapons being fired? They wouldn't wait to see if the rounds were going into the air (which is dangerous to others by the way).

I only disagree with the insinuation that its the military's fault. I don't think they have much say in how big their budget is, or really even in how they spend it. Thats entirely up to We The People's political representatives.

Errors and mistakes do not equal deliberate fraud or illegality. In an organization the size of the Pentagon mistake are inevitable.
