Republicans are right about media bias on race--mostly media reluctance to criticize minorities--but the types around here are wrong to excuse Covington students' racist reactions in response to race baiting from the Black Hebrew Israelites and the Native Americans apparently led by Nathan Phillips.

Students should be given tools to respond to racism directed their way. One school of thought is to turn the other cheek--in the Covington case the kids should have walked away--but I don't think this is a realistic expectation in every case. I suggested the Covington kids might have, for example, sat down in front of Phillips and his in-your-face drumming and chanted, "The world is watching!" They could have added a chant about race baiting. Why should kids, or anyone, be expected to endure race baiting?

You mean think they can attack anyone who spoils their fun by getting them think about how we can deal with the media and racism?

Fox News is hyping the conflict with the same intention as the other mainstream media--making a buck.

How about focusing on getting rid of mindless racism and not on politics? There is way too much racism in this country--from whites and minorities.

 

I don't think the GOP will have a lot of attraction for many young people if the party doesn't tone down the racism, sexism, and homophobia.

Obviously, when someone goes and registers to vote and decides to mark what party they support, there isn't someone over their back, that can tell what's in their heart. The GOP, most educated people know, has been against slavery, and for civil rights since well before the Civil War.
