I apologize for buying into, spreading, and defending this hoax. And I apologize for any aspersions that I directed towards you personally. I bought his narrative, in some significant part, because I want to believe the alleged victim as a default and because I wanted to see MAGA as the villain. Both beliefs were wrong in this situation and are wrong, in general, to some degree. A larger degree than I was previously willing to see.

 

I respect the way you held your ground against waves of opposition. You did so with integrity. You didn't resort to gutter level tactics. You took a position and defended it to the ability that you were able to, given available information. Kudos!

Pardon my reflexive repulsion at any parent, aunt or uncle who would say don't grow up and be successful kid. This isn't something that people of any race normally do. Disowning a child because they're gay would be emotionally hurtful to the child but this is not the same thing as saying grow up and be a bum. It's often done because of their religious or social beliefs about homosexuality. Apples and oranges ...

There is something to be said for empirical evidence. You don't have to believe just me, though. I would love to see a poll of black people on this question. If even 50 percent of black people corroborated your beliefs, I would retract my statement. This won't happen.

However, reality doesn't support your theory. If what you believe is true the members of the Congressional Black Caucus wouldn't be legislators, Obama wouldn't have become President, etc. No one is held back by being inspired by a beautiful song that passes the torch to the younger generation. It says soar, be successful, don't squander the sacrifices that were made for you by previous generations.

Your premise that telling kids that they're gifted suggests that they don't need to work to get ahead is severely flawed. Being gifted is not a license to be a slacker. There are Gifted and Talented programs in schools across the country. The kids in these programs typically have to do more academic work than kids on traditional tracks or at least they're learning more advanced material.

It's interesting that you're the only one who has been using the phrase white privilege in this conversation. There is a natural tendency for people to learn about their heritage and race is one part of identity. Accepting these realities shouldn't shackle anyone. It's condescending and inaccurate to insist that others should believe as you do or they won't be successful.
