Ohio jury awards $11 million to bakery owners targeted by Oberlin College student protests

Like my quotes said, the jury requested that the college pay the bakeries legal fees, although the judge has the final say on that. Considering that the bakery wanted to settle pre-trial and that both Oberlin and their insurance company had no interest in doing so, I'd say the judge will likely side with the jury on this one. We shall see. Oberlin admins were as dumb as a box of Paris Hilton's on this one; I have no problem with them paying for it. Maybe I would feel otherwise if they were contrite, repentant, and honestly asking for forgiveness - but I see little hope for that.

I hear ya, man. I get called a Trump supporter all the time even though I've often said the guy was NOT someone I wanted to vote and had it been ANYONE but Hillary on the Dem side, I'd likely have voted for that person over Trump.

In my opinion the democrats own trump more than the republicans because they ignore the will of their primary voters. All the more reason we need a viable third party — I hate having to vote for who I hate the least vs who I like the most.

Very simply, you want a delay paying the $25M, fine, immediately post a bond for $36M!

Oberlin is not catching on that we are all fed up with their harmful racial incitement antics where they seem to think every white person who is not part of their political coalition is fair game for slander abuse and as much economic harm as they can inflict.

Great GREAT news! I think I should get some of the $32M for all the support showed and for buying some pastries on line in their hour of need. I would use the money to fight racism. And to buy pastries.

Some of these smaller colleges are having to close due to high fees and declining enrollment. I don't know about Oberlin, but this can't help.

In this case, I just have NO idea what your point could possibly be.

 

This has taken WAY too long (and it's still not fully resolved yet, as Oberlin is deciding whether they want to appeal to the state Supreme Court).

 

Punitive damages may not be covered as that is deliberate bad behavior, not an "accident" as insurance is generally designed to cover. This will depend on the state and the policy language.

Nope - still here. And I think the whole thing is ridiculous. Protesting because students were caught shoplifting? It sounds like they were just looking for an excuse. And the College's admin getting involved? Also ridiculous. Where I come from, shoplifters are held accountable - not turned into heroes.

I do, however, think the judgment is a little high. And if it results in repercussions for the town financially, it's irresponsible.

 

Oberlin College hasn't paid Gibson's Bakery the $31 million it owes (plus more than $4 million in interest)
