Greetings from my limited tech world. May I ask: How is internet speed measured? By the 300/600/900 Mbps number or, By the download speed i.e. 150 Mbps? Or are both numbers equal? Comcast tells me my Internet Speed is 1000 MBPS Yet I did an internet speed test which showed 162/MBPS Can anybody help an old alterboy?
You may have 1,000mbps, but if you're using an older router or cable modem...you might be limited by the speed capability of the router or modem. Make sure that you have the capability of seeing speed. If you're running a router or modem that's running 802.11N or AC, then you can see almost 7,000 mbps...but if your computer's card isn't capable of using the N or AC (say the older cards) then you're going to have to upgrade the device in your computer in order to get the speed.
My router has 'prioritized' ports. The first port has a potential of 1000, the second more like 500 iirc, and the last two are only 100 or so. Might be worth a check if yours is similar.
There are 1000 meg in 1 Gig. A 1 Gig internet speed is something I'd expect in a medium size biz rather than home! That is awesome. 162 Meg is very good. Even if you have a 1 gig agreement with Comcast, I don't doubt there are any number of bottle necks keeping you from that speed. For example, you in theory would be able to dl an 80 gig game from Microsoft in 80 seconds. In reality, it will take a lot longer due to other slowdowns including congestion on their own servers and their server speeds. But, for instance, you need about 5 Mbps to watch hi def 1080p TV. So, you appear to be flying. You could be streaming 6 TVs at 4K at that speed! EDIT: or about 25 mbps for 4K https://www.teamknowhow.com/discover/discover/bandwidth-requirements-for-streaming
My experience -- my ISP service said I was getting 40 mbps. I was wireless. So I used Speakeasy to run a test and it showed around 20 mbps. I called my ISP and they said run an ethernet cable from router to my PC. I was able to do that because the 2 are only 3 feet apart. After that another test showed I had 40 mbps.
