Now fake Facebook accounts are using fake faces Dublin, Ireland (CNN Business)Artificially-generated faces of people who don't exist are being used to front fake Facebook (FB) accounts in an attempt to trick users and game the company's systems, the social media network said Friday. Experts who reviewed the accounts say it is the first time they have seen fake images like this being used at scale as part of a single social media campaign. The accounts, which were removed by Facebook on Friday, were part of a network that generally posted in support of President Trump and against the Chinese government, experts who reviewed the accounts said. Many of the accounts promoted links to a Facebook page and website called "The BL." Facebook said the accounts were tied to the US-based Epoch Media Group, which owns The Epoch Times newspaper, a paper tied to the Falun Gong movement that is similarly pro-Trump. The publisher of the Epoch Times denied that Epoch and The BL were linked in emails to the fact-checking organization Snopes earlier this year. ... https://www.cnn.com/2019/12/20/tech/facebook-fake-faces/index.html It would seem that efforts to manipulate American opinion through social media bots and fake news haven't let up, but instead are growing more sophisticated, now using computer-generated faces to go with their false identities. You can't trust anything you see online anymore, it seems. Not if it doesn't come from a trustworthy source, anyway.
Damn, they use avatars on FB? Wow! Get more fake news and opinion manipulation on CNN. FB also allows people as many accounts as they want.
Those efforts absolutely have NOT gone away The Russian Bots and Macedonian Troll Farms are gearing up for a 2016 Repeat (on steroids) to help Trump. All Social Media Sites from FB to Twitter (and even forums like PF) are going to need to have increased vigilance to prevent these FAKE "Bot" Accounts pushing Trump's Agenda.
This. No matter how much and how often they try to bambozzle us with this propaganda, we've nothing to fear or be concerned with. And if they choose to believe and fear their own propaganda that shows how little they should rule over us.
Making excuses for losing already? Wait until the Mueller report comes out, then Trump will really be in trouble.
My, that is a funny response. You draw two absurd comparisons (an anonymous forum to Facebook and an avatar on such a forum to a Facebook profile image that is trying to appear genuine), and in the process do not condemn the practice of attempting to influence Americans with fake social media accounts, but use mockery to deflect and defend the practice.
I found that "deleting" my FB account 10 years ago could be undone by simply signing back in and when you did, your privacy settings were loosened for your trouble. Here is how I got out of FB. 1. Deleted years worth of posts 2. Unfriended every friend 3. Removed all photos and personal bio info 4. Changed my name to a fictional person 5. Changed my password to something that I will never remember 6. Deleted my account To get back on FB, I would have to start completely over.
So you dishing the owners of this site that they dont want it to appear genuine? Do you know how many random pictures I put in my Aviator on FB...? Heck right now I am using George Burns
Facebook didn't get Trump elected, "We The People" did. The Russian Hoax nonsense will just never end, will it?
I can see the meltiness isn't limited to just Trump. I'm talking about manipulation of Americans through social media by foreign agents with an agenda, and you instantly leap to defending the legitimacy of Trump's 2016 election. That's more deflection and defense of a practice that must be condemned and discouraged, not encouraged by dismissing it as ineffective.
fake & real social media have been used to influence people since the day they were invented... nothing to see here, move along... anywho, anyone that IS influenced by social &/or mainstream(any) media, need have their rights revoked and their licenses for everything else suspended until further notice
Or maybe by elements in the FBI/CIA and at the White House that ordered the spying on an American political opponent before during and after his campaign and while he was in the White House? Maybe you should be more worried about who gets elected in your own country and what they do while in office. Foreign interference isn't really an issue. It's been going on since the country was founded. People in our own government breaking laws and manipulating the system, is a real problem. They need to be dealt with so it never happens again. By the way, it was these people that brought in the most foreign interference into our election in 2016 and it backfired. So then they kept using foreign interference to spy on our own Administration.
Oh, but it is really an issue. It had quite an impact in 2016, even if you would deny that, and continues to have an impact today. Just look at all the fake news people regularly post right to this forum from such sources as OAN and The Gateway Pundit and Breitbart. I would argue that foreign influence is largely if not entirely behind the rise of the alt-right as we know it, as it was borne out of radicalization that occurred primarily online and especially during the Obama years.
How about being vigilant where it counts and that would be at the voting booth where every voter has to prove eligibility to vote? The left has gone crazy over the last 4 years about election integrity but they've nothing to secure our elections, in fact, they fight against securing them. And if anyone at all can be swayed by a Russian ad it won't people the people who are already supporting Trump. That means the people who are influenced by those ads come from the side of the high educated and intellectual elite.
