We can always rebuild the economy.

Not as simple to rebuild the lives that might otherwise be lost.

The test tells us where the virus is spreading and how fast. It helps people to know if they are infected, even when they don't have symptons, and it helps authorities know who to notify that they've been in contact with someone who tested positive, so that they can take precautions, like self-isolating sor two weeks.

Those who have been in contact with an infected person can refuse the test, can refuse to self-isolate, can be casual about washing their hands, but they do so at the possible expense of the life or lives with those that they, in turn, have contact with. IMO, if someone is informed that they've had direct contact with someone who tested positive, yet dismisses any precautions and continues to have contact with others, is an a..hole of epic proportions who obviously cares nothing for the lives of others.

Given his recent interactions with officials from Brazil who have tested positive, and now refuses to take any precautions for the sake of others, that describes Trump.

That's a fair prediction to make. You say 1.5 million dead in the US, I say a number less than this year's annual flu deaths. We should know in about 6 weeks.

As of this writing, the US death rate from this virus is 41.

Not sure what that has to do with my comment. Let me try again. About 46,000 people have died from the flu in the US this flu season. We don't shut down the country every year for a few months to save those lives. In fact, it never occurred to me that we should until now, where we are actually making that determination. So should this be an annual event? Should we close the country every year for a month or two to save the lives of tens of thousands who would otherwise die every single year because of the flu?

It's a little hard for me to believe you don't know what's going to happen. But let me respond by asking you a question.
How many do you think will die from this next season?
    Hint:
It is more contagious than flu, there is no vaccine, and is more lethal.

I've actually given my prediction elsewhere in this thread and you are once again avoiding my question. I thought you wanted comments? Doesn't seem you can deal with them.

    Oh golly yes.
Yes. I think it will happen again next flu season if we don't get a vaccine sooner than what they are saying.
I would predict the death rate to be about 5 to 10 times worse than the normal flu.

So you predict anywhere from half a million to a million dead from coronavirus.

That's less than some predictions I've seen. However once again avoiding my question. Let's try again. So should this be an annual event? Should we close the country every year for a month or two to save the lives of tens of thousands who would otherwise die every single year because of the flu?

CDC estimates that the burden of illness during the 2018–2019 season included an estimated 35.5 million people getting sick with influenza, 16.5 million people going to a health care provider for their illness, 490,600 hospitalizations, and 34,200 deaths from influenza (Table 1). The number of influenza-associated illnesses that occurred last season was similar to the estimated number of influenza-associated illnesses during the 2012–2013 influenza season when an estimated 34 million people had symptomatic influenza illness6.

That would put it at a less than 1/2 million at the high end. But we have a vaccine for flu. So next flu season will be higher if we can't improve on the time being forecasted for the vaccine.

We are doing all we know how to do for the flu and the mortality rate is lower, so no, I don't think we should shut down.

You mean no mass inoculation this year?
    It's waiting till next year?

    That's what they are saying.
Nothing can stop a global outbreak in its tracks better than a vaccine. Unfortunately, creating a vaccine capable of preventing the coronavirus that causes COVID-19 will probably take at least a year to 18 months, health officials say.

“That is the time frame,” Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, told the House Oversight and Reform Committee this week. Anyone who says they can do it faster “will be cutting corners that would be detrimental.”

So the mass inoculation of virus is gonna wait till next year?
Is that how you are predicting how bad it will be next year?

What's this incredibly infectious virus going to do it the meantime, play with itself and wait till next year?

Well hopefully what we are doing will slow it down and then it will do what most viruses do in the summer.
What it does next flu season is what will drive the numbers.

Worst idea ever. You would take away their access to food and clean water and sanitary resources. It would kill the healthy as well.
