Freedom of movement was at the expense of the country's right to deny you entry for being in the EU; you liked it, thought it made you free, but it was making you as free as having your neighbourhood watch tell you
'whoever lives on your road is allowed to come into your home and move in if they please because they have the right and that you cannot deny them entry'
    - in short, it's a very selfish freedom to have, only seeing 'what's in it for you' instead of what it means for your host country.

The damp squib of an anti climax since UK voted to leave the EU.

Well to be honest they never any trouble when we were members. And now we've left they've made it quite clear we're still just as welcome to come to them, they're nice like that.
And luckily our government have got some adults so they gave us a nice soft Brexit with a free trade deal.

Yeah, EU's a better thing to be off of than PRC China.

Last I heard, a speed boat of pro democracy supporters was arrested en route to Taiwan and sentenced to 3 years. I've yet to see anyone make it to the UK despite hearing in the flare up that UK gives them the right to settle here and recognise them as British Subjects, and that deal between UK and PRC China was meant to last 50 years, and that UK isn't big enough to stand up to PRC China about Beijing's crack down on Hong Kong in the face of that agreement in the transfer of power in 1997.
The United States stripped Hong Kong of special status.
The EU completed an ambitious investment deal with PRC China.
I'm glad the UK wasn't included in that EU PRC China deal, since, you know, Hong Kong, human rights, all that should matter.

We employ a fair number of students who come on J-1 Visas each year. Mostly Romanian, Uzbekistan, Russian. The occasional Jamaican. There have been an Australian or two in the past, but no Brits that I know of. I wonder why?

Kinda interesting to see people from other countries argue politics. I can nearly hear the accents!

CD is right though... no politics allowed in the bar. Thats the only reason we've survived all these yrs!
Well, that and the cigarette machine.

Grades were due in two and a half weeks ago. Report cards have already been posted online - there's no changing them now. Aaaaaaand - a kid just turned in an assignment. Said kid has shown up to class three times this year. She's turned in nothing at all. Literally. I am not joking.

Today I happened to check my email and she sent in an extra credit assignment - that she did wrong. Didn't even follow the directions. I don't even know what this kid expects me to do at this point.

    Good grief!

I agree with you on China, but I have to tell you it was not the reason people voted to leave to EU, that was very much about nationalism, flag waving and drum bashing.
Re the US. I think all the civilised world should stand shoulder to shoulder against China's actions. Maybe now Trump has gone a
America can diplomatically open up to the rest of the planet again.

    It was about democracy.
Look at this deal with China the EU rushed through under Germany.
    https://www.politico.eu/article/ger...deal-draws-criticism-from-other-eu-countries/
    https://www.scmp.com/comment/opinio...ina-investment-deal-exposes-european-weakness
    https://www.voanews.com/east-asia-p...investment-deal-threatens-us-europe-relations

EU countries feel steamrolled by 'the German engine'. There were 25 EU leaders not invited to the conference call, most notably, Italy.
This investment deal appeases China and even legitimises China, plus it gives China a stronger hand in the world now.
It also threatens the US EU relationship.

The EU is a horrid undemocratic process that will sell out human rights to make a quick buck and undermine America.

The choice to leave the EU was the right one for the UK.

Grade her like you would any of your other students to do anything different wouldn’t be fair to the ones who followed the rules. I would be tempted to ask her why she wasn’t doing the work before.

Ah, I know why. Kid has sorta a sad life - she's the oldest of five and all of them have some kinda learning disorder. I know she's been bit of a holy terror to other teachers last year - and indeed every year. I made her one of my projects this year - I'll call and keep in touch with mom and always stay upbeat with them so while I still had no choice but to fail her - I mean, I had nothing to work with regarding her grade - I kept telling her it was in no way personal and she knew I kept asking her for work and I reduced the requirements for her to pass. She's not mad at me for failing her because she knew I would do anything short of actually going to her house and helping out - which yeah, can't do that now.

I might not have her next semester - it's hard to explain but there's some rule that states that we're supposed to be within ten students of each other in our fields and I'm twenty-five or thirty over what the other teachers are. I'm actually carrying a class more than the other teachers. I could grieve this with the union if I wanted to but they've already said they won't do a thing about it, so there ya go. The office asked me about a list of twenty students to move out of my class and she was the very last one on that list; I told the office I'd be happy to keep her but the list scaled down all my lowest performing kids and she's easily on that list.

Teachers are so overburdened with forms and tests, they have very little time for a one on one with children to find what makes a child learn or want to learn. It is almost magic when a teacher finds the key to make some children learn.. Good luck with her. Finding the magic with SLD students can be hard.
