That's interesting. Even the government of India has weighed in. I wonder if this could have to do with Gandhi's controversial time in South Africa:
It's more likely that it has something to do with the popularity of knocking over statues. I hope someone makes a statue of my ex-boss so I can fire a missile at it.
What did Gandhi do in S.Africa? I know he spent 21 years there. I found this: https://www.sahistory.org.za/dated-event/mk-gandhi-forcibly-removed-whites-only-train-carriage But, was there something else that you were referring to?
The statue and the man it memorializes are controversial, so naturally it had to come down... Statues are offensive now. The kids and I built a snowman last weekend and someone knocked it down! We should have built a gender neutral snow person.
Everyone should have the experience of knocking a statue over for social justice. There simply arent enough statues for everyone to have a turn if we limit it to statues that actually represent social injustice. If we really care about equality, we should commission more statues of racist and bigotted historical figures so everyone can have equal opportunity in knocking them over.
Can we just pick one Lesbian or Trans Black person as our national statue and replace all other statues? Just one statue that we call go... hmmmm o.k.
