I don’t disagree with your general premise. I just think carving out special months is more divisive than inclusive. Working together and Striving for equal rights and equal opportunity for all is what I think is the better way.
If an individual's or a group's self identity/self esteem depends on what others think of them, then said individual or said group is allowing themselves to be less than equal. Special dispensation simply furthers the thinking that some groups are not as worthy as others. Identity politics and special dispensation has a negative result when it comes to inclusiveness and "all Americans are the same." If the desire is to be equal, then go be equal - don't expect special treatment.
Wars and Presidents? Boring! You must have missed Edison, Ford, Einstein, the Wright Brothers, Bill Gates, etc.....
You mean the woman that was killed by her own discovery? She would have been better off making sandwiches.
Always cracks me up when a random dude tries to claim credit for what other men have accomplished just because they happen to have a penis, as if some basement dweller had any hand in creating anything.
Yup, The Donald has been a prime example of that - he's made millions playing the victim of the last election.
It makes no difference to me. I don't hardly even know those recognition months are even happening. IMO, recognition of the past is part of working and striving together for the future.
Recognition for past accomplishments is not a matter of self esteem. I could see self identity. I don't see how special dispensation would make other groups not as worthy. Does someone receiving the presidential medal of honor make you feel less worthy? Identity politics is a Faux tv made up concept. It's a way to denigrate another group.
We didn't have a white history month so it was Revolutionary War, Civil War, WWI, The Great Depression, WWII, and Korea/Vietnam, then summer break until next level when it was Revolutionary War, Civil War, The Great Depression, WWI & II, etc. I think in 7th grade we had a Great Inventors nodule workbook
Recognition of the contributions of individuals is desirable, regardless of their sex or race/ethnicity. But recognition of racial/ethnic groups as a whole seems to be moving things backward instead of forward. It is hard to consider that "we are all the same, all just Americans" when racial/ethnic identity are constantly bashed into our heads by government and media. Identity politics isn't made up. It is a very lucrative industry. Regardless of the news sources one watches, hardly a day goes by that something isn't race-based, and that only serves to divide us.
We tried that approach. It doesn't work because instead of getting rid of difference, it gets rid of the language to talk about the problems. You can't conceptualize the state is discriminating against a race if you can't conceive of the idea in the first place.
There is a lot of race/ethnicity of the past to over come. It was over 150 yrs of white male dominance. And that group isn't giving up their dominance without a fight. Things move slowly. Slaves were freed. But blacks were not still considered equal. Women got the right to vote. But still lagged behind in all areas of equality. It would be nice to be referred to as American. Not Irish American. Italian American. African American. Asian America. 2 of those labels have gone away. 2 of the others have not. But those Americans are newer Americans than the former 2. It seems we always have used labels in human history. If you want to say identity politics exists, it's existed since our inception.
Oh, they have most definitely advanced. I'm a girl from the 70s and most definitely remember belts holding pads, clasps, techniques to get it done, and the training one needed. The only good thing about sex education was learning how to use "sanitary napkins"
Well, if you can't name any then what exactly are we supposed to be celebrating? Does having a vagina make someone a historical figure?
What is celebrating women's history supposed to do? Besides show me where I claimed credit for anything?
When you tell me how knowing anything about Thomas Edison has made you the greatest human ever, let me know. Otherwise, pound sand.
