Dodge, Dip, Duck, Dive, and.......Dodge. If you remember the five D's of bear defense, not amount of bears can touch you. - Patches O'houlihan

I think it strange that someone is worried about being attacked by a bear and starts a thread to discus it in depth.

Bear attacks are deadly. It's nothing to take lightly.

I am 67 and never been attacked.
Fact, there are only 40 bear attacks around the world a year.
There are 240,000 people struck by lightening a year.
What do you carry with you to protect yourself from lightening strikes?

    A friend wants to know.

You forgot to count the people who aren't classified as bear victims because they simply disappeared and were never found.

If you have any practical ideas for a device to protect against lightning strikes, there are probably people who would be interested in having such a device.

The forests I frequent are known for having bears. While I prefer we avoid eachother, there isn't any guaranteed way to do that.

As I said, only 40 bear attacks around the world a year.
Seems to me, gun enthusiasts go out of their way to look for "excuses" to carry their guns.
In fact, this is obvious to every reasoned human.

Not counting all the people who simply disappear in the woods and are never heard from again.

We don't need excuses. "That we choose to carry them" is reason enough.

If "people who like guns" talk about guns in an area set aside for exactly such discussions, what is that to you?

Does it also bother you that "people who like fast cars" talk about fast cars?

    19 + 18 +11 = 48.
    That's a 20% error.
Kinda hard to take that number seriously.

Its OK man, I get it. Sometimes I go onto pro sports threads just to tell the pro sports people how ridiculous I think pro sports are. I always feel like the jerkwad afterward, but from time to time I can't help myself either.

I can understand that. If you play a competitive sport you might lose, learn to work as a team and learn the reward of hard work.
As a hunter... (do I need say anything? lol)

    Peace brother! :fishing:

Ah, I meant watching sports. My fault for being unclear. I no more understand the enjoyment of watching people hunt than I do watching them play ball. Both seem asinine. Playing sports is plenty fun, I got nothing against that. As to your assertion that there isn't competition in hunting, well, sometimes nature wins. Usually when the prey gets away... but sometimes the hunter gets killed, perhaps by something like a bear ;). Most of the unsolved woodland disappearances in America are hunters. So its not like its risk free... in fact I'd wager to bet 'losing' at hunting is far more likely to result in your death than most other competition sports, where the only thing you're likely to lose is pride...

I didn't Google. But have you included India?

Apparently they have the most dangerous bears there. And they are not that big.

We only own a point .22

I'm thinking that using it as a some sort of battering device would be more useful?

Remember, the safe word when fighting bears is "spumoni".....
