https://www.cnn.com/2021/11/15/politics/michael-flynn-one-religion/index.html Just curious, but how many people here support this idea? This is one of the leaders under Trump, but you all know the backstory. Which religion should we choose to be the "one"? If "Christianity" is picked, which version is to be adhered to all? Personally, I find this type of attitude absolutely in opposition to the ideas of the original founding fathers of this country.
I really don't believe he wants any kind of government religion or any kind of government encouragement towards this end. This isolated snippet allows people's imaginations to get the best of them. He is Roman Catholic and they don't have a great track record. Without any context I'm not going to assume anything nefarious. Perhaps he is encouraging some kind of evangelical movement to accomplish his vision.
While I think it's hard to tell what someone actually thinks, I have heard many others state that, in their opinion, everyone should be a Christian, and that the US is supposed to be a Christian nation using that religion to frame the government and the laws they make. I think he was telling the crowd what they wanted to hear. Not sure which one is worse, him not actually believing in what he was saying or him believing it.
And perhaps that was what he meant. We can't tell from these snippets. Something to the effect of - wouldn't it be great if everyone was Christian then our country would have a moral compass. Of course it ain't gonna happen and if he suggests any kind of coercion towards that end other than reasoning then he would be worthy of condemnation. Until I see that then I'll consider his comments benign.
No, it was about people, not just "crazy" Mike Flynn, that actually think that way. That there should only be Christian religion in the US, and laws and policy should only follow Cristian rules. Did it "wake" you?
From your linked article: Flynn, who was subpoenaed last week by the House select committee investigating the January 6 attack, made the comment during a speech to a conservative Christian audience on the ReAwaken America tour in Texas this weekend. "If we are going to have one nation under God, which we must, we have to have one religion," he said. "One nation under God and one religion under God, right? All of us, working together." This reads to me like standard boiler plate for speaking to an evangelical crowd, unless you also think "one nation under God" is threatening hate speech intending to establish a single religion.
We all have our infirmities. Flynn is a Catholic so you got that from what Flynn said? Suppose that's why the media should do a better job of context so people don't come away with these strange and accusatory interpretations.
They tell me that Xoe Biden wants One Nation Under Woke Ideology, and appears to be on the way to mandating it by law. Will be interesting times, when your Christians are considered the anarchic rebels, fighting for the freedoms of the people!
According to me or Flynn? I have no idea what Flynn believes on the subject, the one-liner from the op intended to make him look bad certainly doesn't let us know. I am of the belief it can teach us profound life truths. But what I believe is pretty irrelevant to this thread.
Virtually no one. Do you have a link the a video or a transcript of what Flynn said before and after this quote? Its rather vague as is, and the other two threads on this topic dont include any further context, nor does any website I've been able to find anywhere. ...which makes me think the context is missing because it doesnt fit the narrative in which this blurb is being broadcast. If Im wrong and he meant what everyone is claiming/assuming he did, then this is certainly another area where I have to oppose Flynn's ideology. But I need more context than a short quote cut out of what is most certainly a far longer speech.
As others have note the call for 'one religion' by conservative political speakers almost exclusively occurs when talking to (usually evangelical) religious crowds. At least I can't recall a single occasion where that call has been made to wider audiences as part of campaign for a significant State or Federal office! Maybe you could run for county dog catcher in a deep red State and get away with it but on a wide stage? No way. So its just verbal puffery for an audience who see that as a ideal outcome albeit one that can never happen - and most of that audience know it. The problem is of course it runs headlong into the First Amendment and all the legal precedents covering the issue of religious freedom in the United States. So its never going to happen, not without overturning the First Amendment (and proponents of such a change have about as much chance of that succeeding as there is of the Second Amendment being overturned.)
I agree with Flynn, we should be one nation under one God. And which God? The one true God, Flying Spaghetti Monster of course. Ramen to all true believers!
Well speaks exclusively of the Judeo-Christian faith. Now certainly in J-C especially the C side the directive is to convert non-believers. That is true of most religions I know of. But he seems to step over the line with the country begin "under" his god. The founding fathers insured the government would not be under any religious faith and religious faith would not be under the government. He gets a little to close to the line for me.
It flies in the face of the first amendment. Religion is a set of beliefs. How do you regulate beliefs?
I don't think you can. I think religion and governing should be totally separate. No law should be made from a religious belief. None. Too many have been in the past, and some are still hanging around. Slowly changing though, which is why some of the extremists are getting more extreme. Fundamentalists have always been a danger sign to me, no matter the religion involved.
