President still had to be notified and make a decision within 15 minutes and the orders passed through the chains of command. Granted it can be done quickly but asking anyone to commit to a course of action that would kill tens of millions of people and end the world as they know it, all within just a few minutes would probably be all but impossible. One of the reasons that the Soviets built Perimeter (Dead Hand)-(even though it has never been actually fully activated).

China will use bio weapons. They saw how "less than lethal" worked, now they know the path to victory. We are defenseless due to freedom and the difficult in producing vaccines for diseases dropped on our door step.
They are certainly working on a strain that won't kill Chinese. Give them time. All they have to do is protect type "O" and they can own the world.

    Why?

    *laugh*

Because over 2/3 of our nuclear weapons are not silo missiles. They are still to this day bombs, SLBM and SLCM (submarine missiles), as well as missiles and bombs on our surface ships. At most, we could "launch" about 1/3 of our missiles on such an order. The rest are going to need hours at an absolute minimum to prepare and launch.

And we have not kept a fleet of bombers airborne and hovering off the boundaries of Russia for decades.

It not just the ICBMs launching. It is the attack being detected, the scale and targets being identified, the president being informed, the president being presented with Americas retaliation options, the president making his choices about retaliation, the presidents decision being transmitted.

My understanding is that retaliation is automatic nowadays for just that reason. It's called a "Doomsday Machine". The end of all life will be automatic

It has never been automatic, and never will be automatic.

Where in the earth did you ever get that silly idea? Not only does it take an actual person (the President, or "National Command Authority), but it also takes at least 2 individual people to recognize the authorization to use such a weapon, then to actually do the things required to use it. Be it a missile or a bomb.

"Doomsday Machine" and autonomous nukes are just a figment of your imagination.

Actually it's Hollywood imagination which too many people take as being reality.

Such machines exist only in fiction. They've never been put into operation. Not even the Russian (Soviet) one called "Perimeter"(Deadhand) is in actual automatic operation as far as is known.

    Exactly.

Now I myself purposefully use an avatar I had taken of myself directly inspired from that movie. However, I am also entirely aware that it is a movie, and only a movie. And not reality in any way.

But I find it frightening that so many take such fantasy as reality, then think they should have an influence on how things are actually run.

China needs the world, they know diseases mutate, and we have nukes. Lots of nukes.

China isn't going to commit suicide.

Yet as bad as it was portrayed as being, BILLIONS of people on Earth including tens of millions of Americans survived the nuclear holocaust.

The nuclear exchange and immediate radioactive fallout isnt really a concern for most humans that dont live in a huge city or near a strategic target. The big killer will be the collapse of power grids, distribution networks and general law and order. The vast bulk of the deaths from global nuclear war will be starvation and people fighting over food, freezing during the winter and disease from lack of sanitation and medicine.

We need more movies portraying nuclear war as a quick and cheap way to take the roof off your house and the fun of radiation sickness.

Companies make big money out of wars, and we need more of them to boost the stock market.

Who wants a boring life of seeing their grandkids growing up? War is our true destiny!

After the Cold War ended, the US felt lost until the War on Terror started.

That hasn't gone well, so now it's back to the Cold War but the hot version for fun.

No one wants to sit around doing nothing, and everybody likes a war-time president.

After a significant nuclear exchange with so much infrastructure gone, it would be like living in a Third World country, but a lot worse.

Maybe we can invent the term Fourth World country.

No need; it's called a War Zone.

But I think it's what we want; that's why we've been moving NATO ever closer to Russia and arming Ukraine to the teeth.

They tried to impeach Donald Trump for freezing shipments of weapons to Ukraine.

It looks like the majority want a big war and want to threaten Russia's existence.

Can someone get together some kind of alternative to war, or would that be unpatriotic?

Nothing can save Biden, but the war is a useful distraction. Without the war, I suspect the US public would be looking at the 17% (and rising) inflation and shouting expletives and plotting how to get Joe out of the game and onto the bench.

Theres a lot of money to be made in war. Power too. And the American war machine is at the beckon call of anyone who can cater sufficiently enough to us Americans 'we can save the world' mentality.

...and we probably could, if we paid more attention to who is actually doing what in/with our government.

Americans don't understand wars; well, pretty much nobody does. There are too many people involved and too many interests too.

So the media tells us which are the bad guys, and then we know who to kill.

In modern war all the spending goes into "operations" , that is fuel, spare parts, and ammunition. These are for the most part all part of fixed cost contracts where the markups for them are a fixed amount that doesn't go up.

The real profits in military contracts are for "procurement". That is buying new weapons systems like tanks, combat aircraft and warships.

During a modern war, "operations" squeezes out "procurement"

Even if true, thats ignoring all the opportunities for land, power and resource grabs the chaos of the conflict affords. And then theres the contracts for reconstruction, replacing the lost assets, leveraging deals of desperation out of power imbalances... you're focussing on the micro.

    And also training.

Before we deployed, we spent in total well over 3 months actively in the field doing training to prepare us for our time in the sandbox.

That is not cheap, as it costs significantly more to keep us in the field for weeks at a time than it does to have us just hang around in garrison and live in the barracks.

And we were lucky in this aspect, as I was stationed at Fort Bliss. Most units had to be flown there, as that is where most were trained for a month or more prior to deployment. That is even more money spent. All of our SW bases saw huge amounts of money spent building training areas just for those going to that region. One of the sub-camps of Fort Bliss even saw a large "town" built, to replicate what would be found in the region. Complete with mosques, and playing "Call to Prayer" at all of the appropriate times. And all that also falls under "operations".

S/G-3 or "Operations" is more than jsut what is spent in doing combat. It also includes all of the training done before one goes into combat. Including the fuel, food, ammo, etc used during that training.
