These will be daily news updates about the war being waged in the sovereign nation of Ukraine, from various sources.

This news will be checked for its veracity before it is published.

It will also come from differing sources, including the government of Ukraine.

At lot of it will be miscellaneous news that is flying somewhat under the radar screen but is imo nonetheless important to read and digest.

Others can of course contribute here, but again, I also ask you to double check and triple check your information before passing it along as real news.

I don't want to spread false propaganda, nor do I want others to do it, either.

The Ukrainian defense ministry will be announcing today that at least 20,000 Russian military have been KIA since the war began.
The have used modern facial recognition technology and good old methods (like dog tags and military IDs) to back up their figures.

The Ukrainian Defense ministry is reporting that every single city in Luhansk has been shelled by the Russians, they are not sure that even one hospital in the entire Oblast ist functioning at all.

    Good thread, Stat.

I do hope that others will also check sources for veracity. My rule in general is that if the information came from the internet, don't trust it. Yes, that's an over-the-top statement that makes me sound like a pessimist or conspiracy theorist. But it's a statement of caution because the human mind tends to search out support for biases and because I'm a skeptic. I have seen so many conflicting reports of events in the Ukraine that I'm really not sure what to believe. I'm seeing this as one of those situations where it's just too easy to make claims that can't always be verified, at least for now.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not suggesting that we not follow this or that we're being intentionally misinformed, all I'm saying is the I'm not going to accept anything as gospel until after this is over and we can sort things out. I do see Russia as totally wrong in it's invasion, but how it's all playing out is cause for me to question what's true fact and what's hyperbole.

So, let's see how this goes.

Rhein Metal, manufacture of the Leopard tanks is asking the German Government for permission to give the Ukraine 40-50 Leopard1 tanks they have in storage. It would take about 6 weeks to get those tanks going and crews trained.

German Secretary of State is calling for heavy fighting equipment to be sent to the Ukraine.

Check Republik wants to send its Mig 29s to the Ukraine, they have spare part problems and the planes become useless.

My humble opinion, everybody tries to get rid of his CW junk yard to fight a CW junk yard.

Germany says it can not give the Ukraine its junk yard, !!!!! 40 !!!! year old Marder APC because it would degrade its defense ability !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Meanwhile, the Ukraine has captured over 280 T72, T82 and T90 in perfect condition, some even fully armed, stuck in the mud or out of diesel. There are still over 100 MBTs abandoned and not jet recovered by the Farmers Brigade.
The number of APCs and light damaged tanks, repairable are even greater. Same for tracked artillery, howitzers, rocket launchers and trucks.
At the present the Ukraine has more MBTs, APCs, tracked artillery and so on then when the war started.

I just summ things up. To lazy for the links, the info is there, look for it.

Thank you Statz. I'm assuming you're conscious of the need to weigh Western news reports against a range of alternatives. That's more critical now, than at any time in the last 80 years. We've always been lied to, but there's now so much more riding on truth.

We ARE being misinformed, intentionally. And please do question - question everything. The worst thing to do is make assumptions based on what your local media tells you (ie .... Ukraine good/Russia evil, and everything is going to be fine in a few weeks so don't stop eating cheeseburgers). Take in as much Ch!nese and Indian reportage as you can, and pay attention to the Hundred Nations declared neutral.

This is highly doubtful. By all accounts, Russia's armor was not in good condition when the war started. Don't you think a mildly motivated crew would sabotage their tank before abandoning it, if only so they wouldn't have to fight it later. In addition, it takes time to train crews and assign the tanks to units.

In short, Ukraine is not just capturing tanks, jumping in and driving to the front. It takes time and personnel that are most likely in short supply right now to make them useful.

I absolutely do not support Putin or anything he's doing in Ukraine, regardless of the justifications. I'm a huge skeptic of the news, but we can't deny the damage being done (mostly to civilians).

On one hand, we have things like the reports of massive damage done by the Russians in certain areas, and a seeming ability to move around the country as needed. On the other, we have suggestions that Russian troops are refusing to fight or even abandoning their units and destroying their weapons. Two conflicting narratives that are largely unsupported to any relevant degree. It's a caution.

All I'm saying is we need to keep in mind that it's way too easy to spread rumors and tilt narratives in today's world.

Also, I won't say we are being intentionally duped because I don't know that. So much of the reporting is based on individual stories, and a room full of eyewitnesses can see the same events in strikingly different ways. The very best I can do is form an opinion, and that opinion is going to begin with the biases that I use to accept or ignore information. What I will say is that if we are being intentionally misinformed, it's our own fault for not being skeptical of our own beliefs. If we are seeing the misinformation coming from one side, we are highly biased and easily duped.

There's so much more to all of it than the cartoonish good/evil of these 'individual stories' we're being fed, so it's wise to keep the mind open and remain skeptical .. especially of our own beliefs.

We've made ourselves very easy to dupe. We're so soft, thanks to generations of perfect safety and plenty, that it never occurs to us ulterior motives NOT in our interests, could be at play. It's basically feeling too special to be duped .. a sort of "why would anyone want to hurt me?" kind of arrogance. We think that kind of shabby treatment is only for the dirty peasants of scoundrel nations.

I don't dismiss the individual stories as being overly dramatic or maybe even false. I'm only saying that we should be wary. The people are obviously going through hell, and we should not ignore that.

It's good to see UNICEF is taking a role in this.
And from your link-- " Putin described the war in Ukraine as 'noble' " Really, Putin?? In what way is it "noble"?

Nor do I ........(support what Putin is doing). In fact it makes very little rational ........let alone humanitarian sense.. His intention is to "cleanse" Ukraine of anyone that wants to live in a democracy............and has nothing to do with his lies of Nazis. He wants that territory to rebuild Russia into a previous land mass. (which he seems t glorify in his mind)

    1) I'm not suggesting that these individual stories are inauthentic, just that they're very carefully selected and LIMITED, to that which produces the right sentiment in the reader, without distracting the reader too far from from consumption/commerce. They'll tell us about dead Ukranian children, but not about the threat to our food security resulting from the bigger picture, nor the paradigm shift to Eastern supremacy, nor the threat of retaliation against the West. They want us to think none of it will touch us, so they focus in on small instances of pathos instead. We feel like we're being kept informed, we align our sympathies as directed - and yet our engagement is limited to the self-satisfaction of remote 'empathy', so we cheerfully carry on supplying coin to the corporate backers of Western democracies.

    2) I didn't post any links :)

Lithuania cuts off Russian gas imports, urges EU to do same - ABC News (go.com)

Lithuania ceasing all Russian gas imports for domestic needs | Reuters

Lithuania has completely cut off all gas imports from the Russian Federation.

It is the first EU and first NATO land to do this.

Lithuania announced this on April 3rd, 2022, the ban is effective as of yesterday.

This is being verified by multiple, independent from each other sources, so it is of course neither propaganda nor is it fake news.

It should be noted that immediately after Lithuania did this, the Russians murdered a famous Lithuanian Film director who was in Ukraine. From UkraineNOW:

New details of the death of Lithuanian director Mantas Kvedaravičius in Mariupol have come to light
Earlier it was reported that he died in a missile strike. But in fact, he had been captured by the Russians, who then shot him dead, and the body was simply thrown away into the street.

His wife, risking her own life, took his body away from the besieged city and brought it to Lithuania. The real cause of the director's death could not be reported earlier precisely for the sake of her safety.

The Russians murdered a Lithuanian nation on Ukrainian sovereign soil in an act of vengeance for Lithuania cutting off energy ties to Russia. That's a war crime, right there.

Ukraine is claiming that among the rapes that Russian soldiers have committed, one even raped (brace yourself for this) a baby.

Yes, you read that right: a baby.

    UkraineNOW is reporting:

This has not yet been confirmed by outside sources, but consider the exactitude of the information that the Ukrainians have (the soldier's family name and the town from which he comes) and also the fact the Pres. Zelenskii literally spoke of it while talking to the Lithuanian Parliament.

I am 100% sure that in the fullness of time, this will be confirmed by multiple sources. So, no, this is not fake news.
