~ I think the best defense weapon is the one you are most comfortable with. However being that I know almost nothing I refer to what I read from experienced shooters and law enforcement — the shotgun is best for home defense. I think the reasons are obvious ...

Yes. It is an advice of what to do when you wake up and realize someone had broken into your house.

Your firearm is likely to be in the bedroom, which limits your options. You can try to run into the bedroom and engage the intruder with your bare hands and loud Kung-Fu screams, or you can get out of the house and call the police. Which approach would you choose?

Cool beans. Today they are saying what I just said.

Sure thing Rambo. Infantry does not teach to make such decisions, but you are free to sacrifice your life to defend your TV or microwave oven it they are so important to you.

.380 is an awfully small caliber. How about trying a .45.

Its not a hypothesis, it it the recommended course of action, but feel free to do whatever you want. If you barge of the bedroom to tackle the intruder, then go right ahead.

You already wisely commented: " I think the best defense weapon is the one you are most comfortable with." and I agree that the .380 round is, in my opinion, underpowered so it sounds like you need something between the .380 and the firearm that is already "big and heavy"

By all means, get a firearm that is as comfortable as possible to shoot so that practice is a pleasure and not an odious chore.

If you are considering a handgun for self defense, I wouldn't consider anything smaller than 9mm / .38SPL to be reliable.

Finally, you usually get what you pay for and if you're counting on something to save your life you want it to work without issues.

Other forum members have given me good advice when I needed it and I'm happy to do the same for you if you're interested in buying a firearm.

5 Tactical Tips to Survive a Home Invasion
    https://www.military.com/military-fitness/general-fitness/5-tactical-tips-to-survive-a-home-invasion
    1. You need to develop a code word that will tell your entire family that it's time to spring into action. You don't need to make up some kind of secret code. The word "escape" works very well and is simple and straight to the point. Forget about "red wolf" and use something simple.

    2. Designate a "safe room" in your home where everyone can go at the same time. This room should be stocked with several specific items that will help you survive the upcoming fight. The list of items isn't that long, but the list is outside the scope of this article. The one thing that you must have in this room is a phone that can be used to call the police.

    3. Do not, under any circumstances, leave the safe room. If you have your family in the room with you, resist the urge to put on your cape and fight the invaders single handedly.

    4. Develop a "fatal funnel." If you are using a gun for home defense, position yourself in a corner of the safe room that is on the opposite side of the door. This will give you the maximum amount of time to decide if you're going to shoot, because you'll be the last thing the intruders see when they burst through the door. In this instance, you have the advantage because they will have to make an assessment of the room before they make a move. You only have to decide if you're going to shoot or not. You will know that it's either the police coming to your rescue or the bad guys coming to harm you. Just make sure you don't shoot the police.

    5. Stay in the safe room until the police arrive, no matter how long it takes. Even if you are pretty sure the home invasion is finished and the intruders have left, do not leave the safe room. You can't be sure that the attackers aren't lying in wait to take your family by force to hold them hostage or cause harm. Stay in the room until the police have cleared the house and tell you to come out before you decide the home invasion is over

Grow up! You don't have to agree with me, but why get angry and personal? Very immature.

If you want to expose yourself to an armed intruder, then do it. Who could possibly care less.

You got personal first so stop whining when you get it served back. Did you know not everyone lives in a 4 bedroom 2 story for instance? Some of us live in small homes and the front door and bedroom are close.

Like I said, you are free to do whatever the heck you want and that includes exposing yourself to an armed intruder. I am simply offering common sense advice from people who know better.

Do they have a version for a mobile home where your door is paper thin and it's about oh 16 ft from the front door in a straight shot?

Kinda wondering what you think they teach at Ft Benning.

I've completed the MOUT training course, which stands for Military Operations in Urban Terrain, with entering and clearing buildings/structures being a focal point.

    So, there's that.

You're continued insistence that home invasion is targeting your TV or microwave illustrates your inability to discern between burglary and home invasion. I'll do no such thing, as far as I'm concerned they are there to kill me and my family. Or worse.

    Plan A:

~ I think that you miss the point. Often there is no choice.
~ Exactly correct. Sometimes the front door IS the bedroom ...

Definitely a shotgun, and for use in the home one with the barrel cut down; doorways are a pain in the ass inside a house with a full length barrel and a shortened barrel is a lot more maneuverable, as well as spreading the pattern a little wider, plus your rounds don't go flying through the walls and kill a neighbor by accident. My wife is petite and can handle a 12 gauge just fine so don't worry about 'recoil' and that other rubbish unless you want to use an 8 gauge or a mortar as a side arm or something.

Your choices are to google for advice from experts, or do whatever you want. Why is that so hard to understand? We are simply sharing views here and for whatever reason it offended the living crap out of you.

Sounds like you are saying they teach home defense, which includes assaulting armed intruders in your pajamas. You, like the other tuff guy here, can do whatever you want in your own house. Experts in the area have shared their advice and I passed it on. If people don't like the advice then so be it. I am not trying to twist anyone arm here. In the expert opinion its good to have a firearm and a plan, and the plan is as described in the Military.Com site which I shared. That plan is in line with other advice from similar sources.

Whatboutism is an old Soviet tactic, and a very weak argument.

Sure, what about you live in a tent? The advice which I linked in applies to vast majority of home types, and people with common sense understand it won't apply to 100% of them, which could be a trailer with no bedrooms. That poster argues for the sake of arguing.

I'm not offended at all..... I'm just trying to get you to see that there is no one-size-fits-all solution no matter what experts you appeal to.

But you can imagine I'm offended if it makes you feel better.

No one said there is. Common sense helps understand where is applies and where is doesn't, and most people get that. If you live in a tent or an RV where the front door is in the bedroom, then you plan accordingly. No need to explain the obvious.

That's a perfectly adequate handgun for self defense especially with self defense ammunition.

Depending on your hand size, you may want larger grips for better comfort and control.

Next, you also might want go get a Speedloader(1) if you feel that you might want to be able to reload quickly.

One more thing, you may not always have a chance to practice with live ammunition and dry firing a firearm is sometimes hard on the firearm so you can use Snap Caps so that the firing pin doesn't fall on an empty chamber.

Finally, NEVER point a firearm at anything you don't intend to shoot even if the gun is "unloaded"

Good luck, have fun and please be careful.

But does that assertion apply to Jewish firearms as well? Nothing in the Talmud seems to say one way or the other.
