Francois Misson was born in Lyons, son of Jaques Misson (1619 - after 1695). He was a traveller, an author and at the start he became a judge in the 'chamber of the edict' in the parlement of Paris. With his family they moved to London in 1687. He was employed as a tutor of Charles Butler, son of the first duke of Ormond. With him they undertook a Grand Tour, going through Germany and then visiting all the major cities of Italy. At the end of their trip Misson when to The Hague in 1691 to publish the "Nouveau voyage d'ltalie, avec un mémoire contenant des avis utiles à ceux qui voudront faire le mesme voyage", a work written in the form of letters, which was used for the following fifty years as a guide to Italy - British Museum.
