When I think of my foreign policy if i were lucky enough to be Commander in Chief of this great nation, one country stands out above all others as being America's greatest ally, and is in stark contrast to all of our other alliances: The Japanese.

In a world where the US has had military commitments all over the world, the Japanese were the only ones with the balls to tell us 'we're fine, we don't need you any more'. And I respect the hell out of that. Not only did they tell us this, they backed it up by reforming their constitution and rebuilding their army. Again, in contrast to certain other 'rules-order based' partners. Giga chads.

https://carnegieendowment.org/2023/02/08/japan-s-new-defense-budget-is-still-not-enough-pub-88981 It'll be a challenge for them, and we should be there to help accelerate the process, but at least they're actually willing to be an independent force in Asia.

I want to actively encourage an interdependent world, a world in which our partners can stand for themselves and can work in conjunction with, not sit on the backs of our country.

The more interdependent the world becomes, the stronger America's own power becomes because we're not obligated to be here or there, we can choose where to be and that'll be more unpredictable for our adversaries.

Article 5 sickens me, Article 5 is verbatim the reason Woodrow Wilson wasn't able to get the League of Nations passed. Wilson's dream has become reality, it just has a new name now.

I want to create a world where Article 5 is no longer possible, it's a hindrance on the US and prevents us from truly projecting power.

I would think after WW2 and the lack of Japan needing (or being able to) get seriously involved in other conflicts worldwide, Japan doesn't really need us that much. At least militarily, or am I not seeing the whole picture?

I agree that Japan is one of our great allies. And it's very sad (not to mention scary) how the Trump administration abandoned Japan in favor of the North Korean dictator when they are the nation most threatened (apart from South Korea) after Trump legitimized North Korea as a nuclear power.

You're right, they don't. Though they are a preferred candidate to take the lead on Asian affairs(as opposed to China.). My thing is, the Japanese are taking that role seriously and taking steps in that direction. As the article i linked to illustrates, yeah it'll take time but I'm quite fine investing time and effort into a resurgent, independent Japan that's allied with America, as opposed to our other allies who are less than serious about their own security and independence.

I don't think we ever abandoned Japan, even under Trump. I know people screamed about the photo op that didn't in fact change a thing, but the attempt was to try and to divert North Korea away from China. North Korea is a Chinese client state, and such that China is fearful of integration, due to a mass migration crisis into China by NK Defectors.

One significant way of countering China would be to give the go-ahead for the South to unify with the North(under Southern leadership) and force that migration crisis onto the Chinese.

It'd be nice to see Japan lead on Asian affairs, but realistically I don't see them passing China, mainly because China's critical to the world economy and they've got 4 times our population to back it up.

Before Trump, we were very much in our way to get China to stop supplying N. Korea using sanctions by us and most European nations. Trump threw all progress we had made down the drain. Now there is no way back. And Japan is one of the nations facing the most risk.

There is no way to excuse this. We abandoned them.
