Serbia president calls to disarm country after second mass shooting in two days

Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić vowed to disarm the country on Friday, as Serbia reels from its second mass shooting in two days.

“We will carry out an almost total disarmament of Serbia,” Vučić said, according to The Washington Post. “We must make a decision to confront this evil.”

Eight people were killed and 14 were injured on Thursday in shootings in two villages near Mladenovac, south of the Serbian capital of Belgrade. Police arrested a suspect on Friday, after an overnight manhunt.

The slayings came just one day after a 13-year-old boy opened fire in his school in Belgrade, killing eight of his fellow students and a security guard.

“We’ve been walking around like zombies the last 24 hours, looking for a reason something like this could happen,” Vučić added on Friday as he announced his plans to make sweeping changes to the country’s gun laws, according to The New York Times.

Vučić called for a two-year moratorium on new gun licenses, a full audit of legal gun owners and harsher prison sentences for those found with unregistered guns, the Times reported. He also vowed to increase Serbia’s police force by 1,200 officers over the next six months, as part of an effort to place an officer in every school.

In Serbia, there are about 39.1 firearms per 100 residents, giving it the third-highest rate of civilian gun ownership in the world.

It only took two killings in one week for the Serbs to establish a gun control policy like Australia and Canada did over 25 years ago.

Better late than never.

Doesn't sound like a "disarm" to me..... Sounds like a start to a good sound gun policy to me... and he doesn't even mention the simpler case against assault type weapons... he's talking about guns...

being disarmed worked out well for those who were Milosevic's targets for extermination.

 

But nuts who have the drive, the competence, and the commitment, to see through something of that magnitude, are a far more rare breed, I would guess you know, than the average mass shooter-- who, to leave a tragically high death toll, needs no more than an assault rifle, a few large, ammo magazines, and a gripe.

 

no one has ever committed a mass shooting in the USA with a privately possessed, legal assault rifle. and guy with a lighter and a dollar worth of gasoline killed more people than anyone has in a mass shooting. not even a guy who planned his mass shooting for over a year and had unlimited resources and stashed 12 rifles and massive amounts of ammunition in a hotel room. One guy, took him less than ten minutes to get the gas and kill over 80 vs the top mass shooter in US History-who planned his massacre for years and spent several hours getting ready to perpetrate it (that being the actual shooting-not getting the guns, the ammo the hotel room)

Why don't some people care enough about the slaughter of kids at school to hand in their weapons, and get them out of the hands of everybody as best they can like as is happening in Serbia?

From what I read, still a long way to go before a single person in Serbia hands over a single gun, voluntarily or otherwise....

Does anybody know what Serbia has to go through to get these presidential plans to be law? I sure hope it's easier than the old U.S. of A(mmunition), but I suspect it's not..

 

I assume all he needs is to put a Law in place and 'Bob's his Uncle.' That can't take long at all. Implementation and enforcement will take time, yes.

just stop=you don't care about our kids-if you did you would be talking about all the other issues that are problematic for children. You only care about imposing your hatred for gun ownership on a country you don't even count in. We don't care what you think about our rights. You cannot do anything about our rights. and we laugh at your frantic attempts to pretend you are doing it "for the children". Children have become the last refuge of the control freaks and authoritarian busybodies

 

Of course I do, he was a serb murdering others in Bosnia who were disarmed. DUH
