Hardly a "government line"; some expenditures are dictated by law - They must be paid before any discretionary spending.

ALL expenditures are dictated by law INCLUDING discretionary spending.

Hello. Congress controls the law. Mandatory spending doesn't exist any more than every law ever passed.

You are living in dream or perhaps insulated political world if you don't think that the situation worse now than it has ever been. Please view some other sources of news other than CNN and MSNBC. This is really becoming a crisis in places like Chicago where immigrants are now sleeping on mattresses in police stations. New York City is now trying to ship them to the suburbs, and the Democrat mayor as complained to the national administration. After a while these people are going to explode, and then we will have problems, like the summer of 2020.

WE NEED TO CLOSE THE NOW. WE HAVE REACHED THE LIMIT.

If you don't care, or think that this not a crisis, you can ignore me. It's the way I've come to feel about the Democrats. They don't want to fix things because they think that can gloss over it and tell those who point out the problems as alarmist fools. If you think I fit in that category, I guess we are done communicating about the issue.

Why isn't it a question to Democrats? Republicans have passed a bill to increase the debt ceiling.

If Joe Biden orders Janet Yellen to default the United States, she needs to refuse and resign. If she obeys his unconstitutional order, she needs to be promptly impeached for violating the 14th amendment.

Or, of course, the Dems Senate could pass the only bill on the table, the House passed Clean Bill that increases the Debt limit by $1.5 T in exchange for keeping spending at 2022 levels which is frankly quite generous, considering all the $Trillion Red Ink Orgies Dems passed in 2022. Of course, Dementia Joe could refuse to sign it.

If you managed to amass $3 million in the bank while the government provides benefits to some people on welfare, what are you whining about? They clearly didn't hinder you to get rich. Would you be better off if you had $3.5 million in the bank, but people who lose their job through no fault of their own would have to starve? Me, I am also pretty well off (not as well off as you, but still in the top 10%). I am actually happy that we have welfare system and I don't have a problem paying for it. You know, unlike you, I can actually envision a situation where my, or my kids' luck runs out and welfare would be there to prevent them from falling through the bottom.

Its a shame they always play politics with it and basically hold the nation hostages over it.

First they cut taxes to a point where we don't collect enough to pay for spending, and then they complain about it. Its absurd.

"Elections have consequences" is the old saying. They're not going to stop paying for Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security while they increase spending at the border. It's just a fact of life.

If you want more action at the border, you'll have to win the election. What might you have to give up? Anti-abortion or perhaps cutting social programs? Liberals might have to do something about street crime or the border to get climate action. You know how it goes.

I'm part of the increasingly angry middle in this country. If folks on the extremes run the economy into the ditch fighting over the debt ceiling, we're going to be taking a hard look at who we should punish.

I'm tired of the gun grabbing, abortion laws turning women into second class citizens, culture wars over public education, and the insanely expensive decades long "war on drugs."

It's only "fake news" to those who don't know how the government pays its bills.

    Damn straight.

Playing games with a phony debt ceiling just raises the stress level on folks who depend on social program benefits. There's something wrong when people take delight in the debt budget chaos.

It's only a phony debate if you think the debt ceiling is unconstitutional.

At some point the government becomes illiquid and has to choose who to pay. Who do you want to stiff?

I don't like government waste, but I also don't like starving folks out who need help. Arbitrarily setting a cap on programs isn't doing the job any more than blindly supporting programs we don't need.

Technically true, but some laws contain provisions that require extraordinary Congressional action to end. Take it up with eh Treasury Department is you disagree. Source <-- Or goggle it yourself.

You could just give in and avoid the crisis. Would you rather have the crisis than trim a tiny part of the increase in spending?

No one. Just take the deal and this all goes away. Why do you want a default?

True. The poster I replied to probably doesn't even think that a US debt default will, most likely, result in a credit downgrade, to which the stock market will not react well. His stash of $3 million may be less once this is all over. The House GOPers also know this, which is why they want the stock market to tank so they can blame Biden for it and retake full control in 2024.

You don't know what you're talking about. This is DEBT. Not expenditure. The money was already SPENT. Now we need to pay back whoever loaned the money for us to make the expenditure. So the government shuts down non-essential services... But that's not nearly enough. It can then stop paying China or paying for bonds. But that's a terrible idea. So it stops paying veteran benefits, Social Security,...
