First, I don't believe there is any such thing as "the right side of history." History is always about in the future, who shows up and writes down their version. I do understand that as a liberal, you do actually believe the arc of history bends towards justice. I don't because I don't think that is what history teaches us.

So trying to go back and rerun history in such a way as to make you feel better about it seems to me to be a fool's errand since you are rerunning history based on your 2023 bias and morality. From our safe position, World War II is safely in the can. We won ect...

From the perspective of those who were living in those times things probably looked mighty different. People who actually had the responsibility of millions of lives had to make very hard decisions and felt they understood the Japanese mentality of the time better than you do, although I'm sure you are comfortable with the Japanese mentality of this time. But we are not rerunning history with cat girls, gamers, and company men.

If you were in Truman's shoes in 1945, you would have to justify your decisions not just to yourself, but to the American people. Do you think the American people of 1945 would understand a decision to put maybe millions of their loved ones in danger, prolonging the war, just because you didn't want to kill Japanese civilians? Do you think the Japanese, if they had the bomb at that time, would have the same quibbles about it as you do now? Or would they have used it on Honolulu, Los Angeles, and San Francisco?

Diversity of opinions is valuable. The woke partisans of diversity celebrate diversity of race, nation, and ethnicity, as well as of sexual orientation. Woke people are rarely tolerant of non woke opinions.

 

It's true that I don't have all the facts surrounding Truman's decision, and judging him on that point might not be fair, and it was an extremely weighty one, but, given what is known, still, we will just have to disagree on this point.

They didn't have the bomb so that point is moot. Moreover, what another's morality is is irrelevant, clearly they wouldn't have hesitated to use it if they had had it, but that doesn't mean we should be like them, for if we did, we would become them. We are supposed to be better than them.

On the flip side, because of no diversity and a strong values culture...China enjoys an incredibly low crime rate.

They have already surpassed us in innovation. I'm not a China shill. But to simply shrug off places like China and India (two very NOT Diverse populations) both emerging to become world leaders over the next 10 years is just willful ignorance.

Of the world's highest IQ's guess who leads? Non diverse nations. That's who.

Taiwan leads in chip manufacturing and innovation right now. Is Taiwan diverse? Were they able to do that because they hired a gay person? Or a black person? Or do they just hire...SMART people?

As for crime rate, ya...China has low crime. China is not diverse. Iceland has low crime. Iceland...is NOT diverse.

While you can't draw a 1:1 correlation of diversity to an increase in crime I can say with confidence that smushing a bunch of people together who all have different cultural values and identities is absolutely going to cause violence and clashes.

 

Perhaps it s cyclical? And I have read that it isn't poverty alone that causes crime or revolution, but relative poverty (ie, extreme wealth disparity). That may be. I don't have research in this. Do you?

 

They also could have demonstrated the weapon off shore somewhere, perhaps on a military base, as a demonstration. But perhaps it wasn't only about showing that the USA had the weapon, but showing the USA was eager to use it on civilians.
