Jury Determines Trump Must Pay $83 Million In Damages For Defaming E. Jean Carroll

After deliberating for less than three hours, the jury in the E. Jean Carroll civil trial against Donald Trump has determined that the former president must pay the writer $83.3 million in damages for defaming her in 2019 when she came forward accusing him of sexually assaulting her in the 1990s.

Broken down, the jury determined Trump must pay $11 million in compensatory damages for a reputation repair program, $7.3 million in compensatory damages outside of the reputation program and $65 million in punitive damages.

It will no doubt be appealed. What case involving Trump isn't. But in the end his wallet will be lighter no matter what. I don't think fleecing the rubes is going to be enough to cover this.

While the judge presiding over the case, U.S. District Judge Lewis Kaplan, is known for upholding a no-nonsense courtroom, Trump and his lawyer put the judge’s patience to the test. Kaplan reprimanded Trump repeatedly for speaking out of turn, ordered Trump’s lawyer Alina Habba to “sit down” on several occasions, struck a section of Trump’s minutes-long testimony from the record, threw one of Trump’s campaign officials out of the courtroom after an alarm went off on the aide’s phone and, during closing arguments, told Habba she was “on the verge of spending some time in the lockup” after she tried to enter social media posts into evidence at the last minute, CNN reported.

The question is whether this will slow Trump from his assaults on his rape victim - the objective of the case.

If he continues, it would be the foundation of ANOTHER civil suit against Trump.

Plus, the very idea of America deciding this is the behavior they want in a president is seriously worrying. Who the heck ARE we? How do we accept this as moral behavior? Why aren't America's Christians standing up?

'This "defamation" consisted of Trump rejecting the original stupid jury verdict. Apparently there's a new Trump-only rule that if a partisan jury convicts you of nonsense, you are required to proclaim your guilt, or the state will endlessly extort you.'

Beyond that, we have national primaries, the genocide in Gaza, the Houthi attacks on shipping (as well as other Iran funded attacks over a wide region), reports on our surprisingly strong economy (at a time that the Right Wing claimed the US economy would collapse), serious winter storms, the Ukraine defense of their country from concerted attacks by Russia, House Republicans refusing to allow our southern border to be made stronger, the other 90 charges against Trump, Trump's waning brain function, etc.

The Carroll v Trump case is all constant whining by Trump, as he tries to make out that he's a major league victim. There's NO news value in that.

I'm guessing E Jean will be even richer than this 83 million because there's no doubt he'll talk more smack and end up in court AGAIN, and again, and again and at the end of the day none of it detracts from how much Biden sucks

My assumption is the purpose of the appeal is to get a reduction in the amount of damages. Remember, the matter of his guilt or innocence was not at issue in this case. It had already been established. The jury's job was only to decide on how much money Trump owed Carroll for what he said about her. Would it surprise me if the dollar amount was reduced? No. Would it surprise me if the dollar amount was significantly reduced? Yes.

That's incorrect. They're going to appeal the original case. As evidenced by Habba saying they're going to appeal and pointing out how there was no evidence of her claims, the judge refused to allow him to produce his DNA (claiming it was "too late") and the judge pre-emptively refused essentially all of their defense at the trial.

 

Juries of the sexual abuser's peers who assessed all the evidence and the sexual abuser's defense determined the verdict.

If the sexual abuser can't remember Carroll, confuses her with a previous trophy wife, or someone he calls "‘Nimrada," or Nancy Pelosi, his mental deterioration is not grounds for appeal.
