Spare a thought the next time you hold a negative thought about your country.

I am sure there are many things that could be better, and one must not stop striving to be better.

And I am sure there are many things that are wrong, many ills that need addressed.

But for all of that, I wonder, do we often moan, and too often?

In our relative comfort, do we often lose sight of what is important, or what true suffering really is?

After all, there should be no one dying of hunger in our countries, indeed, the law protects against it, and that is a massive positive socially, is it not?

Compare that to parts of Africa or India, live there for a month, in poverty, and you will soon discover that dying of malnutrition and starvation is common.

The reasons as to why things are that way may be complex, but the fact remains that our society, our legal system, and our political system does not allow for our people to die from hunger, in this country.

We may moan about crime, and feel our Government and cops should be doing better or more, but when you compare our crime levels to those of certain parts of S Africa, you realise how safe you are, and how much you take that for granted.

Doubtless there is corruption in our politics, yet surely not to the degree of some countries, who do not pretend to be anything other than a brutal dictatorship.

And yes, there are certainly jobs here that many would turn their nose up at, and yet, at the same time, the employee knows they have rights to protect them, even if the job ain't that great.

Compare that to many other countries, where employee rights simply do not exist.

The list is endless, but I am sure you take my point.

Indeed, probably the only area we can really moan about, with any degree of true justification, is the foreign policy as played out, by our various elected officials.

People in developed countries have it good, that's for sure. Sometimes if you think about it it's kind of funny (but sad) about how good we have it compared to, say, the poverty stricken countries in Africa and yet how polarized a lot of the politics are.

But that's just the way things are. There will always be debates to be had, but I agree that things should probably be put in perspective as well.

Certianly I'd say those in the US on this board love the country. That's why we're all on a debate forum discussing how to make it better, or in some peoples views, how to keep it from destroying itself.

:rage: is oddly a good sign, so long as we keep :blahblah:
