Leave Falklands alone, Argentinians tell their president

    Thursday February 23 2012

ARGENTINA'S president Cristina Kirchner has been told to leave Falkland islanders to decide their own future.

The Peronist leader faced a backlash from some of the South American country's leading thinkers, who published an open letter calling on Mrs Kirchner to rethink her policy towards the islands. They said her attitude on the islands they call the Malvinas was "crazy" and "absurd".

The 17 signatories accused her government of "harassing" the Falklands population of 3,000, who want the islands to remain a British Overseas Territory.

They said Argentina must respect the islanders' right to self-determination.

"It is truly absurd and crazy to force a government and sovereignty on people who do not want it," said Fernando Iglesias, a former congressman.

Historian Luis Alberto Roberto criticised Mrs Kirchner's policies, saying the government should be looking to forge links with the islanders, not isolate them.
"In 1982 we resorted to force. We destroyed what had been achieved over many years. We created perfectly justified hate and fear. We lost the Malvinas. And, furthermore, we lost many Argentines."

This year marks the 30th anniversary of the Falklands conflict and concerns have risen over the increasingly hostile rhetoric emerging from Argentina.

Argentina stepped up its claims to the Falklands when British companies began drilling for oil in the South Atlantic. (© Daily Telegraph, London)

The masses often cant think for themslves , they believe +" want" what their leaders tell to want . More so , in south americas where citizens have a poor record of thinking for themselves.

I am sure that the vast bulk of us regret not taking France permanently from the French on several occasions during the last few hundred years . But that is nearly on a par with someone believing that life is fair or just .
And as for the masses making policy decisions --- that is on a par with setting fire to yourself in public .

You are doing a disservice to South Americans by claiming such fantasy.

As usual with nationaslistic stands off. The falkland island people are ignored while the goverments battle.

But didn't they hold a referendum before and voted for continued english rule?

Your leaders were French,it does not matter if your family mixed with them or not if they were English at the time then the leaders of the country were people who came from France. England got conquered, the English never got it back and that is why all the words in the English language for law and authority are taken from French were as the words for lowly work are taken from the English.

No . The terrorist invaders were French . We were the uncowed Freedom Fighters .
You are getting rather serious , Orson .
But as it happens , my family kept away from the coarse and rather ugly people from Normandy and we brushed our teeth regularly .
There is only blue blood in our ancient family and not a trace of any impurity .
Regardless , it matters little what brand of blood circulates , the design and consistency of our hearts and minds is British through and through .
A Rolls Royce stands apart from lesser vehicles whatever the gas octane or the talents of the mechanic .
Get a grip of yourself .

Not sure whether William the Norman would have like to be called " Frenchman "

From all accounts France as a country did not exist .

Third Man , do check your history you might discover that the Normans, descendents of Norse Viking conquerors , finally succumbed and got totally absorbed /drowned.assimilated (ethnically wiped out) by the ANGLO-SAXONS + CELTs.

Is'nt what you call the "French" language but a vulgarised - lowly -(pidgin) form Latin ? which educated Romans found so irritating to their ears ?

What a bunch of drunken yobs fantasise about during their ethylic relief, is of no concern to us!

Your Majesties have long dropped any claim they had on France, as long gone as the French King's head!

Why not just declare the Falklands independant? If they want to be left alone, they should revolt like the 13 colonies did.

They want to be left alone as a British overseas territory. It allows a high degree of internal autonomy while providing protection against neighbor hood thugs.

Independence is not the goal of the Falkland Islanders maintenance of the status quo is.

j/k-there's an old joke about the worst thing about a place is that it's filled with it's natives. i.e. New York City is great except it's filled with New Yorkers.

Well what would you call a guy who came from what is now northern France and spoke French? As for your ethically wiped out line you are way off. The Queen can trace her family back to 1066 as can many other members of the blue bloods. When the Normans came here they were the people at the top,the English etc were the people at the bottom and that is the way it stayed.

The French language was irritating to Roman ears? Those same Romans who butchered people for fun? Yes must have been very bad for the really nice Romans but hey I got an idea, maybe they should not have conquered Gaul and mass murdered all those people?

How could they have -- the barren wastes of Pakistan are ever so far from London's tower. In any event, I highly doubt that His Majesty Guillaume the Second would have deigned to mix with your... sort. Prattling little immigrants who can't afford a West London flat (and instead settle for a hovel in England's Oakland), whilst pretending to be part of the peerage would surely have turned his stomach. For the love of god, you can't even punctuate!
