Can someone from America please explain your gun laws. Yes I am too lazy, mainly because I fear that there may be many rules and red tape involved.

Anyhow, I ask this because it has come to my attention that some of the Rappers [Hip-Hop] that I listen to or have listened to have been imprisoned for carrying illegal weapons. Now there may be a simple answer so forgive my ignorance.

A quick rundown isn't really possible. Every state/territory has it's own rules. I believe that all states that allow concealed carry have some sort of permitting process.

Here's an example of the differences. In the state in which I currently reside, if I want to carry a handgun then I must obtain a concealed weapon permit and I must conceal the weapon when I carry ... and just because I ask doesn't mean that the state has to grant me the permit. In the state in which I grew up it's perfectly legal to walk around with a handgun on your hip with no permit. If I want to carry a concealed handgun then I need to apply for a permit ... and the state must grant me my permit unless I don't meet the qualifications.

My State is a shall issue State. If you pass an FBI check and are not considered an habitual alcoholic, they must issue. Ours does not distinguish open or concealed but even some police are not aware of that.

there are hundreds of gun laws.

You have federal, 50 different states, and hundreds upon hundreds of city and other local laws.
