Happy days! Sounds like Hollywood's serious about making this one. Starring Tom, too! Here's my scenario:

Maverick 2012 gets disoriented and accidentally bombs an Afghan village killing scores of women and children and loses a leg when he gets hit by a leftover Stinger missile the US supplied the Afghans in '85 for their war with the Soviets. During recovery, Maverick's depression causes him to get heavy into heroin and he's a junkie by the time he's discharged. Back home, he discovers the bank holding his sub-prime mortgage has repossessed his house for non-payment and his wife and child are scraping by on Food Stamps in a one bedroom apartment in Calexico, CA. Not being able to cope with his addiction and increasingly violent psychotic episodes, his wife abandons him and files for a restraining order. Maverick gets evicted from the apartment and ends up in a halfway house. He's on a 6 month waiting list for a VA drug rehabilitation-psychological counseling program, and a one year list for his prosthetic leg. In the final scene, we see him spending his days fending off nightmares and playing a Top Gun air combat game that's being licensed for release together with the movie.

Well, at least it's more true-to-life than the pandering rube-centric bs glorification treatment Hollywood will barf up. And hilariously, "Maverick" will be flying the same aircraft he flew 26 years ago. Unless Hollywood, in it's pandering wisdom, produces a CGI wonderfighter for Tom, a pu**y who wouldn't know one end of an M-4 from the other, to fly.

That's not "TOP GUN II," That's "BORN ON THE 4TH OF JULY II," also starring Cruise.

Good Movie that doesn't need the taint that usually comes with a sequel. Top Gun was awesome because it featured a sort of aerial acrobatic rush that, until then, the public never got to experience at such a close proximity. What's to look forward to in a series that was made famous due to the aircraft? The story was great, yes... but it finished in a way that's appropriate for a film (intended to be a single film) to finish. We don't even engage in aerial combat... enough.

Oh, bulls**t. F-5's masquerading as MIGs? The "aerial combat" sequences looked like a mid-80's computer game. And all that tearful squealing the "pilots" made when they thought they were in peril? It was a huge insult to the US Navy.

Because the Navy should've procured actual MIGs for a Hollywood film.

Top Gun was a fiction movie... you won't see straight-faced/composed pilots on their way to death in a fiction movie. If they wanted an accurate depiction, they would've released video of flight simulators and flight cam footage of... combat that doesn't happen. Loosen up, dude.

It was STILL US jets vs US jets. No 'foreign jets' involved. And people that KNOW US military hardware, knew, the dogfights were completely bogus. Top Gun was basically a cornball BS movie. The special effects were poor to terrible and the actors mouthed their lines without a shred of conviction. It was, "Grind out an action movie filled with big names" and go to the bank.

.......everyone should've known it was completely bogus. It's a fictional action movie ... like other action movies that feature car explosions prompted by gun shots. Why are we acting like they should've obtained foreign aircraft for an audience that can't even name the domestic birds?

    Totally reminds me of this:

"You have to face down a college student who keeps asking you if it was like Black Hawk Down."

Actually they can get away with a lot when filming a movie. A lot less now with videos and people able to do frame by frame or pixel by pixel exams. But a war movie called Merrill's Marauders was being shot around areas behind the base hospital while I was a patient there. Watching the filming, I saw a scene where the American troops were lined up on a road to watch a mule race. The "Marauders" were lined up on each side of the road cheering on the racers. The ranks behind the front row were wearing Japanese uniforms. But you couldn't see that. In some scenes A soldier, Japanese would get shot in a distant scene, his rifle and helmet would fly through the air. The rest of his uniform was American because he'd shortly get killed as a GI wearing a bush hat. It was hilarious watching.

In one scene Merrill [Jeff Chandler] and some troops were crawling thru the jungle. It was overgrown with exotic plants. The camera shot was pretty close as they brushed by the tropical plants and flowers. You couldn't see the ground they were crawling on hand and knees because the camera was in too tight,,,,,,,,,,And because they were crawling around a round flower/plant mound on the lawn of the NCO club!
