I thought this was masterfull. Had to create a thread just for it. So when will we have real cuts so that we spend less than we make?
This is a repeat. And the USA is NOT a household. Or a business. Its a country, which has different priorities and need for effective and productive management. And if we stopped giving Dad an unlimited budget for guns and corporate subsidies for his buddies and paying for his macho fights all around the world, there would be no debt at all.
Right. Because Medicare/medicaid/SS and all other social/welfare programs cost way less than the MIC. While I agree we need to cut back on defense, I ask that you not be completely ridiculous.
I wasn't sure what it was this was the closest match. The budget numbers are current and the topic is a current event.
When you look at the figures as presented, it makes the balanced-budget amendment even more difficult to accept. It's too unreasonable.
No. We haven't had a budget in three years. If we did then the democrats would have to stick to it. Instead, they run our government through spending bill that have no limit. That's why obama has managed to add to our national debt EACH YEAR more than the cost of both the Iraq AND Afghanistan wars OVER THE COURSE OF ELEVEN YEARS!
How does that prevent him from submitting a passable budget? What is little barry doing that President Bush didn't and do we really want him to do it?
Congress has the responsibility for funding the government's operations. If there'a a deficit it's their problem, not the President's. Do you think the President is only authorized to request a set amount to meet government obligations? Most costs are fixed. He can't cut employee costs. Congress approves all mlitary hardware expenditures years before they are due. He has to pay for the troops' food and buy fuel for vehicles and planes. Do you want to cut those items? Congress needs to do its job and get the money. If it doesn't we will end up like Greece.
Nice spin. The principle of budget is the same thing; spend more then what you have coming in and you end up in the red. The only difference is that at the federal level you are working with much larger numbers.
In the future every President ought to insist that Congress fulfill its Constitutional duty and write its own (*)(*)(*)(*) budget.
In the future we'll have self-driving cars that run off of high capacitance nanogel. What about today?
Except that Social Security, etc. have THEIR OWN TAX BASE. If we stop PAYING Social Security etc., we would have to stop COLLECTING social security etc. taxes. The deficit would not look much better, and people would go back to dying in the streets when they get old. Whereas our super massive military budget returns NOTHING! Cutting it in half means we would only spend the MORE than anyone else, instead of spending MORE THAN EVERYONE ELSE PUT TOGETHER. Somehow, I think the Homeland would survive just fine. And so would OUR children and elderly and sick.
It is really true. Based on what I read here we now have a generation of voters that think life is free and fair. They are so quick to "need" things paid for they are willing to cut the ability to protect ourselves to get it. Passing a balanced budget should be a requirement for all governments. They are spending our money and should have to be responsible. It should be criminal to not do so. I have seen this example before, and it does show just how upside down we are, and for those thinking, shows just how serious our debt issue is. I'll share something I got from my mother. Life is not fair! Another one, Freedom is not free. It will take a strong, responsible person to turn this country around. I don't know if that is Romney or not, but Obama has already shown me it is NOT him. As long as our voting base continues to grow with weak people who are unwilling to make the tough decisions and always looking for the easy way where nobody gets hurt, we will be in serious trouble. The sooner our citizens realize we all will endure the pain of correcting our problems but need to be responsible about fixing it, the better. 1st step. Stop our government from expanding it's duties, shrink them back to what is allowed via the Constitution, and force them to live within their means. Exactly what a family or any entity would do when they find themselves over extended. Cut things I buy that I don't need and create a budget that provides no additional debt.
Where in the Constitution does it say Congress has to write a budget? Have you ever read the Constitution or are you like most Conservatives?
Old people would go back to dying in the streets? Man you should learn a thing or two about social security and how our government uses it as a pyramid scheme to launder money.
How would we have won World War II? Or should we have just let the Nazis win? I guess our books would have looked good. But then we would have all those pesky concentration camps.
Congratulations, you don't understand our complex world. Thanks for playing though. You forgot a few key differences between a home budget and the US government. First off, I don't have a money growing tree in my backyard like the US government has. "Want more money, well here, lets just grow some more on this tree". The government can do that. Sure there are implications and problems in doing that excessively, but you and I simply cannot do that. The government can also demand a raise any time it wants to and it's "boss" (the American taxpayer) has to give it to them. Can you walk into your bosses office and demand a 5% increase in salary anytime you want to and get it? The government also works on commission. Meaning, as GDP grows (that is, the overall economic success and growth of our citizens), so do revenues. Nothing can shrink a deficit shortfall faster than unexpected GDP growth. Don't believe me, ask Bill Clinton and the GOP House in the late 90's. Lastly, the government can do all sorts of things to change the amount of money coming in and coming out at any given moment. They can work with Fed and manipulate interest rates. They can give short term and long term tax rebates and more loopholes to put money into consumer hands to move the economy. They can change policies that can affect global markets and value of the dollar (the dollar can strengthen against the yen tomorrow in a way that reduces debt by billions instantly). We could simply tell some countries and other entities that we aren't going to pay them their debt (as most of them ALSO owe us debt, imagine how that works) so "what are you going to do about it". You can't do ANYTHING like those things above in a normal household environment. But hey, I get it. The Tea Party base can only understand the most basic 1st grade math problems, so you have to simplify their panic, fear and hatred of the government into the dumbest possible terms. We do appreciated pushing the stupid-agenda though. We really do.
Oh great, you dumbed it down so conservatives like you can actually understand what people are talking about when they use the "frightening" term budget. Let's play into your household analogy, shall we. So do you think we should let Dad spend most of the money on guns and get into fights (which by the way he lets his kids fight for him while he spends the remaining money on booze and getting laid). The net effect of which is that the kids are starving and when Mom says to put up some money in a fund to pay the hospital bills in case someone gets sick, he calls her a B**** and blames her for all the problems. Great idea. Why did we never think of that.
It should be repeated as often as needed until borrow and spend libs get the message. Libs are so clueless. National defense accounts for only 20% of the federal budget and cannot possibly be to blame for 100% of the debt. As for corporate subsidies do you mean Solyndria? If not you should.
