Indiana Congressman claims U.S. schools will never be innovative unless modelled on Islamic education system
I guess only anti-Israel threads are popular here at "Latest World News". Perhaps, the name should be changed to "Latest Hamas Press Releases"? _
Looks like he spoke on hardships in the education and gave that as an example, in places that disrespect the teachers (i see it too) some more traditional approach may help, it didn't come from a bad place, America must understand that she needs Muslims. - OFC it does, it needs all its citizens, the land of the free got its strength from all the ethnic groups that are part of it.
I thought it was perfectly good dawah. His main point about education was that schools should instill some sort of discipline, and that they should be open to whatever methods work with particular types of students. As he said, some students learn by hearing, some by seeing, some by handling. DUH! "No Child Left Behind" is a cruel joke in that it ignores all of that and teaches to the test. You got more common sense about religion and education out of that speech than Bush the Lesser uttered in his whole political career.
Key words for every islamic school system. All you have to do is look at the current state the islamists countires find themselves in. An orgy of innovation and ingenuity all right, but not in the right way. Let them have that innovation and ingenuity, while US manage with their own.
Learning what the students wants to learn? It could work with some work on it. We still need core classes, but otherwise more power to the people. It's what the University of Sankore so special, that and good teachers.
Geez, so memorizing the Quaran verses should take precedence over math, science and arts? I'd rather memorize some cook book so at least I won't relinquish my tastebuds to the joys of bacon and eggs every day.
Moreover, the Congressman Andre Carson's initiative could be also perceived as an experiment in acculturation, so if he's so keen on winning over support of the liberal academics, this new curriculum with revised emphasis can wait until senior highschool and college years and be offered in place of cultural anthropology credits. Same goes for intelligent design and spinoffs.
Reactions Cynical: meh. Politician telling voters things that will get votes on vote day. Since when do they follow through on manifestos let alone statements during speeches. Informed: He is quoted as saying: Philosophical double standard: What about the one-size fits all approach to the mysteries of life then? "There is no god but god and bingo is his name-oh"
as a christian i do not find his comments offensive or troubling. he my even have some valid points. to dismiss him simply because he is a muslim is as shameful as dismissing a candidate because of his political affiliation instead of his ideals. you cant sum anyone up based on beliefs or affiliations. bad people are capable of great things and and great people are capable of bad things. judge the person based on their whole body of work, not a 60 second clip from a speech. the man has obviously been elected because he represents something in his community that his constituents like. im a creationist but my television hardly ever leaves the science channel. i absolutely can not get enough knowledge about how our universe works. it fascinates me. the big bang theory, black holes, super novas, parallel universes, tracing our atoms back to the guts of the crucibles that went super nova and scattered the building blocks of life throughout the universe... i seriously get excited about this stuff. i have no conflict with it and it doesn't contradict anything i believe. so for those of you referring to creationism as "BS" dont judge people for generalizing a group of people like this man, and then turn around and generalize me in the same manor. as a christian if creationism were taught in school id rather it be taught in the later years along side science and it should be very much stressed that this is a religious theory that is not supported by any scientific findings to date. part of the problem with education is we limit what we teach out of fear of what the student might take from it. let the smart kids ponder it all, they may be remarkable. limiting knowledge is not going to do any favors for anyone. the younger years should be limited to the cores.... math, language, science. i want my schools to teach my kid how to be an engineer, or an architect, or an astronaut. ill teach my kid about morals and ethics at home.
I am sorry but what Muslim country would we want to model our existing system after. We have problems but lets not bring Muslim problem to our country. You don't see a lot of Americans trying to move to Yemen or anywhere in the Middle East but the traficc coming this way is growing.
C arson was referring to the way in which the content is presented, not to the content itself. "Madrassa" does not mean just a place where tajweed is taught, outside of cultural backwaters like Afghanistan and the Pashtun regions of Pakistan.
Truth of the matter is, there are electives, and activists of all manner be it Christian, Muslim or liberal can use them as their playing field to compete with or squabble among each other. The core curriculum is not up for grabs though. If religion should in the end belong in science classes for example, there are certain elective courses which have been corrupted for decades and can be dilligently sacrificed, cultural anthropology being the prime example.
