Can you define the god you believe in?

What do you know about it? A: What's written in a compendium of ancient literature. As a former Lutheran, I understand the biblical god well enough, but I've also gained the perspective to realise that it's both a laughable and monstrous concept.

    That's right.

So, if the definition of GOD is objective, and atheists claim to "disbelieve" in HIM, then atheists are claiming a knowledge of GOD. That's what we've proved here.

    Atheism is not a religion.

Not collecting stamps is a hobby in your mind too?

Listen man, feel free to believe in whatever religion you like. Even feel free to go to a bat(*)(*)(*)(*) crazy religion like Mormonism or Scientology. Just sit their and judge people for not believing in anything. After all, burden of proof is on theists. Which has yet to happen.

Something that can be asserted without physical evidence, can be dismissed without any.

true, I could say my God created the Christian God, and they would have to believe it, cause they could not prove it false

i mean they could not just say they do not believe in my God..... could they?

    Stupid logic.

Atheism means you do not believe that god exists. That natural phenomena created the Universe, as opposed to an intelligent creator. It's a lack of belief in God, but a belief in the natural, as well as a rejection of god as a force of nature.

I think Heretic's insanity is already at least on par with the worst Scientology and Mormonism can produce.

I imagine if he was a theoretical physicist he wouldn't be wasting his time arguing with you over the existence of god.

But God is eternal, a deity does not require a creator.

    Oh... wait...

That's wrong. Atheism must understand the definition of GOD, BEFORE saying God does or does not exist. Read the responses over again if you don't believe me.......

If you come across a new word that you've never heard before, you cannot believe in the word or not, without first KNOWING WHAT IT MEANS!!!!!

Atheists must first KNOW GOD, before "rejecting" Him. This means, it proves, objectively, that atheists must claim to KNOW GOD BEFORE REJECTING HIM.

Everybody here is agreeing with this, so what does that mean regarding the atheistic faith? It means that Atheists KNOW THE DEFINITION OF GOD, before "rejecting" Him.

Let's say "GOD" were something magical, like a leprachaun or unicorn. Nobody believes in these mystical creatures. But, if a man were to stumble upon a hidden place, a cave, and found leprachauns, unicorns, and bigfoot there, and he were to go back out into the world, and tell people, "THEY'RE TRUE, I SAW THEM ALL, THEY EXIST!" People would call this man insane, never believe him.

Why not? Think about the definitions of the words. What is the basis for existence, IF YOU DON'T EVEN KNOW WHAT A WORD MEANS????

Atheists who claim GOD DOES NOT EXIST, must also explain how they know about GOD, and existence, to have sufficient cause and reason, to DENY the existence of them.

I think you put too much effort into this.

Faith is what you have in some deity.

    I don't.

    Simple enough to me.

So you believe in GOD, right?

You HAVE TO believe in GOD, unless you have some reason to believe the definition of GOD is not what you believe in...............see what I mean?

You can't define god, so why would you believe in him?

God is a supernatural being who created the universe. I do not believe god exists.

My God is everythign that was, will be or is... My God is the interconnectedness of it all, thus it would follow that your god is but a small piece of my God, so the question is, do you believe in my God, by your logic, you have too

Go ahead and define God, and I'll tell you whether I reject it.

Yep. If someone tells me that God is existence or some such, then I'll simply counter that existence is not "God," that no one has a right to call it that. There is no basis for making such a claim.

No....rather nonsensical as far as I am concerned.

If you tell me that you saw a Unicorn- do I have to believe in unicorns to say I don't believe unicorns exist?

if you tell me that you believe that everyone's 'true love' will come to them one day, I don't have to believe in 'true love' to not believe what you believe.

ah, but based on the logic of this thread, one can not say they disbelieve in my God unless they know my God, thus proving once and for all that my version of God is real, and also proving that the much smaller Christian God is also real as well ;)

Here, you see, Durandal, things get more interesting............

If I start defining GOD to you, in any way, and you have a prejudice against the WORD OF GOD, and are prepared to reject any definition I give you out of spite, then I can never define GOD in such a way as you believe or disbelieve in HIM. What I'm saying is, you'll reject any definition I give you, not because it's true or false, but because you have a RELIGIOUS DOGMA AND STIGMA, to reject the definition of GOD outright.

Atheism is a religious dogma. You are NOT open minded. You are NOT willing to listen.

Let's say you were open minded, and I begin defining GOD to you, then why would what I say be true or false? There are certain logical paradoxes we must address. How can a mortal, finite creature, such as you and myself, define or understand or have knowledge of GOD, if and when, GOD is Himself immortal and infinite? This, then, presumes a definition of infinitude about GOD. Is GOD finite or infinite?

You just mentioned that GOD is a statement of existence. If God is about existence, and Atheists deny GOD, then atheists are ACTUALLY DENYING EXISTENCE. Atheism is not about disbelief or rejection of GOD. Atheism is actually about the rejection of EXISTENCE altogether. Atheists believe that nothing can exist, or, nothing exists. Atheism doesn't believe in EXISTENCE.

This doesn't change GOD, though. GOD still exists, whether atheists believe in HIM, or not. Atheism must ultimately claim that any existence, or knowledge of GOD, is absolutely subjective. Atheism is not objective.

Atheism is a subjective belief system, religious, and cannot prove itself valid in ANY WAY POSSIBLE. Atheism is intellectually inferior, irrational, and must claim to deny existence to make any sort of sense.

Atheism is NOT about the denial of existence of GOD.

Atheism IS about the denial of existence ONLY. Atheism does not touch "GOD", atheism is a straight denial of all existence.

I agree that nobody can disbelieve something without defining it.

However, defining something does not require reading specific books or any sort of "basic understanding" that most atheists don't have.

A definition, by definition is: The necessary and sufficient conditions for a concept to be called that which it is a definition of.

In order to disbelieve a concept, one has to disbelieve only one of the necessary conditions. The definition of a blue car is that it's a car, and it's blue. If it is not blue, then it is not a blue car, and if it's not a car, then it's not a blue car. In order to disbelieve a god, one only needs to reject one necessary condition for it being a god.

One does not require a full understanding of a concept in order to define it (and your mention of a "basic understanding" is not very well defined). Some versions of definitions are believable, and some even proven, whereas others are questionable at best, and a fair few are outright false.

You have to believe in my definition BEFORE you can deny the existence of unicorns or true love.

If I claimed to you to have seen the NWPFIGQE being, creature, then can you deny that I saw it or not? You can't deny what I've seen, until you know the definition of what I've seen.

    Nope I don't.

You argue from a position of faith- you believe in an intangible, unmeasurable force. I don't.

I also don't believe in ghosts.

But if you good for you.

in the case of gods and unicorns, those are pretty well defined, as for a 'NWPFIGQE', yep, that you need to be defined ;)

Atheism rejects unfounded, unjustified claims about the existence of deities. You seem certain that I won't believe in the God you would define for me. From what I've read from you to date, I would tend to agree with that assessment.
