The real question is whether the UK or Sweden have alterior motives for wanting to take Assange into custody. Is it really just about some alleged rape? Because the case for rape does not appear very strong. Could Assange (and his supporters) all just be paranoid, and could his reluctance to go to Sweden just have blown this whole thing out of proportion?

Or does the Swedish government actually have alterior motives, as some suspect? What are the chances that Sweden would arrest Assange and turn him over to the Americans? How realistic is this possibility? What is going on in the upper levels of the Swedish government?

Interesting that all this is happening under the Obama Administration. Perhaps nothing has really changed.

Britain says Assange Ecuador asylum wouldn't change a thing
16 Aug.`12 - Britain said on Thursday that any decision by Ecuador to give Julian Assange political asylum wouldn't change a thing and that it might still revoke the diplomatic status of Quito's embassy in London to allow the extradition of the WikiLeaks founder.

The British are a confused and sedentary people. Don't expect them to be anything other than slack jawed and bewildered.

Why should we do any of that? The evidence against Assange does seem scant, but they are rape allegations and he should submit to the Swedish authorities to answer them. His claim that he would be extradited to the US doesn't add up. If the US wanted him, why haven't the US authorities said so? The UK is frequently accused of being a US dog. Do you think it would be easier to get him extradited from Sweden?

Apart from that, the UK authorities are complying with our legal obligations under the EAW. I wish we didn't have those obligations and could therefore consider the evidence against Assange, but the EAW does not allow for that. And if he's so concerned about press freedom, why did he choose a country that has such a notoriously bad record on press freedom?

Why on earth didn't he seek asylum at the Australian embassy?

Edit: The European Court of Human Rights will not allow someone to be extradited to a country in which they could face the DP.

Swap him for my countryman, Manning, whom you are treating as do typical 'religious' anti-christians after their usual spiteful love of revenge for being brave.

The Poms are definitely funny liberals. This is not a hard problem. The storming of the embassy is just what the doctor ordered>
