There are over 761 US military bases across this planet in over 130 nations, the funny thing is, every pro-strong defense con that you encounter will tell ya with a straight face he/she is for a small government.

And guess what? Libs are even more hilarious: they are so pro-peace, so anti-war and all about poor people that they can't stand any notion remotely suggesting austerity measures for the semi-fascist, #1 militaristic government on earth.

Actually, there were more than one libs who said "I enjoy paying property tax" in my face after I told them, your tax doesn't really just go to the maintenance of roads and infrastructure alone, but also to the pocket of rich bankers and arm dealers.


You have to LOVE the American people, they are just so precious. You have to wonder, have American just got too comfy enjoying the bliss of ignorance or they just don't care?

Not really. With the quality of soldiering by the US military these days, their government would rather have them away than at home. And the countries that permit them to loiter only do so for the US dollars generated.

One day the American public will wake up, but not too soon hopefully. A good living is made by a high number of people in other countries at the expense of those who actually pay taxes in the US. Meanwhile, the Corporations that don't pay taxes but supply equipment are those taking (instead of paying) the taxes on the home front.

 

I actually wrote a paper on cutting the defense budget while not cutting the pay of the service members. Plus being pro-military doesn't mean we're all pro-global bases. I think we need to withdraw our troops from some of the countries and bring them back home.

 

Apparently, leftists cannot grasp the concept of how large a small Government could actually be when compared to the behemoth we're saddled with at present.

All money first goes to protection, then maybe conquest of Europe, Canada, and the Antipode nations, but defense spending comes before any welfare whether social security, health care, or social welfare expendatures.

When you say you are pro-small government it would behoove you to vote in politicians that vote in ways that are pretty darn close to actual "small government" and if they don't vote against your party the net year to remove them.

I don't mind military spending if it protects the troops, but I also think that it is high time we stop being the world's police force. I'd bring our troops out of foreign countries and you will see how this not only affects the budget but how much people hate us and want to kill us. No one would like a foreign government's troops on their home soil. No one. We would hate it, but we seem to think that since we're "the good guys" they should just instantly know this and be cool with it.

It just doesn't work that way.

Also, I do think that our government now treats its citizens like criminals and suspects and I'd like to see that funding cut so they don't have the funds to watch every aspect of our lives. That is not only "big government" but intrusive government.

To the OP You do know that the same thing is true of virtually every other country in the world? It is also the best thing about virtually every country in the world including the US. Every country has its horse's rear ends. We might disagree about who they are and that disagreement may have more to do with political beliefs than anything else but it's the only reference point we have here.

Property tax typically goes to supporting local schools and the local police and firemen. Interstate highways are do not usually get their funding from property tax.

Reduce the figure to 300, a huge deal can be saved and tax can most certainly be lowered, or at least put to real good use.

Is that anarchism? Don't think so.

Does America have so many vicious enemies all around the globe, that all those 761 bases are necessary? Then the diplomacy of America is not a disaster, it's a bloody nightmare.

 

The bases are there to head off problems quickly before they require more effort to deal with down the road. You have to weigh the pro's and con's on this issue.

Had we had bases in Poland in 1938 and were able to respond quickly with a pre-established army I doubt Hitler would have steamrolled through Europe thereby preventing millions upon millions of deaths.

It is this large number of bases that allowed us to go head to head with the Soviet Union in multiple areas all over the world, eventually winning out over communism. Now you have to ask yourself if dismantling our military and ending our global influence is worth having to respond to another large crisis such as a world war and the cost and time it will take to rebuild our forces in order to meet the challenge. Or would it be better if we maintained a high level of preparedness.
