A mission to Mars would be everything Obama says he is for:

He is in favor of stimulating the econonomy with government dollars. A Mars program would be a great stimulus, creating middle class jobs.

He says he is in favor of math and science. The space program creates a demand for engineers and gives them good paying jobs.

So why did he cut the mission to send men to Mars?

I know the reason, but I will let others give their opinion before I give mine.

The mission probably wasn't worth the cost. These missions have to accomplish more than just putting men on or near mars. They have to collect useful data.

If Obama wants to eliminate manned space exploration, that is his call as the Chief executive. I am not upset one way or the other about it. I did find it,,,, well, Orwellian, when he said "No one is more committed to manned space flight than I am." in the speech when he announced he would cut all funding for it. One of the stranger things ever said by a president.

Because there are more important things to spend the billions of dollars that it would cost on.

Nasa isn't about space travel any more. It's been given a different mission.

Barack Obama: Nasa must try to make Muslims 'feel good'
The head of the Nasa has said Barack Obama told him to make "reaching out to the Muslim world" one of the space agency's top priorities.

White men using technology invented by white men put white men on the moon. soetoro hates white people so he guts the program.
Sort of like what he's doing to the country...for the same reasons.

Going to Mars would be a big fat waste of time, effort, money, and possibly human life with no returrn on the investment. The cost of doing it would be astronomical enough by it's self, but there is nothing we would gain from it that would really benifit US. Let's face it folk, NASA is a big show, it's mostly an entertainment branch, and that is a luxury we don't need right now. Besides, what good would it do to try to go to other worlds if we can't fix the problems we have on this one?

All debatable...Are you saying you don't believe we went to the moon?
Or are you saying you agree with NASA new mission to make muslims "feel good"? As if THAT isn't a waste of time and money.

What a narrow and short sighted view. Much of today's technology came out of the space program. If you think going to mars would produce nothing when the science that conquer's the problems of doing that benefits us all then you are not thinking.

We have spend approx 600 billion since 1953 on NASA, that is not much per year compared to what we are currently spending on drones to send to exotic locations to kill people.

We probably waste that much in 3 or 4 years in SS, Medicare, and Medicaid fraud.
