I don't see that hating allows empathy. It is too strong an emotion and I cannot think of one incidence in which I hated and empathised with someone simultaneously. Hate is too strong an emotion anyway and implies that one's own buttons have been pushed, making rational thinking more difficult.

If youre now saying that what the settlers do and what the settlers are as human beings are the same thing then id have to disagree. In essence its perfectly acceptable to hate what the settlers do and to wish all their settlements were blown away in a storm.
