Jack, I wasn't aware of The Invisible War'. I'm extremely grateful that you brought it to my (and more importantly), the board's attention. This appears to be an extremely important film.

Approx 10% of Okinawa is US military bases. There are 38 US facilities there. There are 50,000+ military and civilians there. Considering that the military population is very young and considering the rate of rape in the US per 10,000, it will happen eventually. The local population my be hostile but the country is not.

How many Japanese women have been raped, since 1945 by US troops?

Jack, is there an academic study other than a questionnaire? How many reports and arrests are there for rape a year in the US military?

How does it compare to the national average?

Oh please, no one if going to defend rape - that would be stupid. But the idea that rape ONLY happens when US troops do it is even sillier. The Marines in Okinowa very often use actual statistics to demonstrate time and time again, that crime rates are actually LOWER among the US military personnel than they are among locals. When a local rapes a woman, do you think the press jumps on it? Do you?

At some point, one can only conclude that the issue is no longer about reason at all. Its not like the US Military Personnel are being let go is it? When they commit a crime, just like every other human being on the planet, we expect they will be held accountable.

In the mean time, there is this thing called a rising China. The deployment of the Osprey to Okinawa has greatly extended the range of the old Sea Knight, and the treaty, which obligates the US to defend Japan in the event of an attack, is a little more than hypothetical in these current times. The idea that a group of locals have driven themselves into a frenzy by demanding that only one segment of a population be totally crime free does not mean Japan is going to set aside geo-political reality to ... what? Punish rapists like it already is?

    Stupid.

    It would be.

But no one proposed this, so why invent an assertion, then argue against it?

    That's what is silly.

Of course no one is going to publicly defend rape.

    However.

Failing to address an issue, silence over it, or efforts to cover it up - that IS complicity.

One does not need be a rapist, to be an enabler.

How is punishing rapists ... silence about it?

I have yet to see the US military let a rapist walk. Indeed, I have seen many court martials where the evidence of rape in unclear, and Soldiers are slammed anyway. Its the opposite of what you claim - pretty much across the board.

So when you claiming a cover up, where none exists, and turning a blind eye to the reality of Japan's geo-political reality what does that mean for your own argument?

    It means it hyperbole.

Not a very good reason for either Japan or the US to make policy changes, but rather, endure the storm of faux indignity.

If you want me to address why your armed forces are so predisposed to being rape driven and suicidal, then I believe I am going to need a salary, and a secretary.

Why do you think it is?

    It's not.

    That's the point.

They are not punished enough and often enough.

Because of the cover up's etc, previously mentioned.

    See?

One thing lends itself to the other..

I meant to make you aware of the fact that even if just one woman had been raped it would be one too many.

But of course it was to be expected that I'd fail in this endeavour. Your ilk only goes all feminist when it serves you to vilify Muslims and black people.

There is probably a bit of cognative dissonance and denial going on, with those that do not wish to admit that, for whatever set of reasons, the US military seems to have a dispropotionate number of rapists, psychopaths, the mentally unhinged, who are being accepted, into the ranks, and actually, protected, by way of those who could purge this, not properly doing so, as is clear to me.

It is like when the RC Church knew that some priests were child abusers. They refused to fully admit the problem, and would often be complicit, by way of even moving the priest to a new parish, FFS.

And it would have kept on that way, but in the end, the age of being able to share info, with large numbers of people, in super fast time, meant that the RC Church HAD to suddenly be seen to be doing something.

It's not nice to have to admit that your nation's armed forces are killing themselves, at a rate higher than any enemies, perceived or real.

It's not nice to realise that your state are dumping their body parts into land fill sites, and not telling the family.

It's not nice to realise that many of your serving troops are so unprofessional, that they are likely off their face half the time, either on whatever drugs they can get, or by way of some drug that the doctors have put them on.

It's not nice to think that your military have been reduced to too many rapists and thugs.

And of course, it is not ALL, it is never all of anything, ever.

    But.

It is too many to just write off as a few bad apples etc.

    It must go deeper.

It must be in the training or in the selection.

Rape doesn't occur anywhere else but in the US military? That's odd.

    Which one?

The one about your state tossing body parts from US soldiers into landfill sites, and not telling the owner or the families?

The one about more of them dying at their own hand, than by all these enemies they are meant to have?

The one that wars of aggression and perpetual occupation tend to mess up the human mind?

The one in which 25% of all US homeless are veterans, cast aside, as if they no longer matter?

Or the one in which rape has often been covered up and is a huge problem, among your 'military'?

    The last one.

Rape in the US military: America's dirty little secret

A female soldier in Iraq is more likely to be attacked by a fellow soldier than killed by enemy fire

Digest this for a second: Women serving in the US military are more likely to be raped by a fellow soldier than killed by enemy fire in Iraq. In the case of sexual assault and rape, the enemy eats across the table at the mess hall, shares a vehicle on patrol, and bandages wounds inflicted on the battlefield. As the old Pogo cartoon says, "We have met the enemy and he is us."

    http://www.guardian.co.uk/society/2011/dec/09/rape-us-military

Last year 3,158 sexual crimes were reported within the US military. Of those cases, only 529 reached a court room, and only 104 convictions were made, according to a 2010 report from SAPRO (sexual assault prevention and response office, a division of the department of defence). But these figures are only a fraction of the reality. Sexual assaults are notoriously under-reported. The same report estimated that there were a further 19,000 unreported cases of sexual assault last year. The department of veterans affairs, meanwhile, released an independent study estimating that one in three women had experience of military sexual trauma while on active service. That is double the rate for civilians, which is one in six, according to the US department of justice.

Quote me one post, from anyone, that has said that.

You seem to be working almost too hard to make light of this.

So, in other words, you are a zealot that hates the military. Gotcha.

The subject is supposed to be about Okinawa ... and here you are changing the goal posts to sexual trauma in the military. Clearly bad things happen in any organization, but, unlike say the BBC, or the French who just acquitted a series of men for years worth of gang rape, we actually do something about it and invite in outside agencies to help us clear it up.

But heh, your fixation with the US military is clearly born of desire to protect women, eh? Right.

    Um.

Because I oppose the routine rape of women.

    Yeah.

    I seethe at that.

    How about you?

    You do, do you?

Is that why you deliberately skipped my comments about rape being hidden by the BBC? Gang Rape in French Ghettos?

Guess what J, I am a Soldier. Guess how may women I have raped? Zero. Guess how many rape rooms in Iraq, where women were systematically dragged off the streets and raped, forced to marry mujaheddin, etc? Loads.

Your concern? Jacktastic that's what it is.

Your only concern is taking rape and using it as a hyperbolistic weapon to demean others. Actual rape victims, I don't think you could care less.

I'll take that as both ignorance of current events and an acknowledgement that you have nothing to discuss about Okinawa. Thanks.

We don't even prosecute rape of AMERICAN women in the military, its no surprise we ignore the rapes of foreign children and women.
