... Neither can we today, and even back when we did it was wildly expensive. Nowadays, NASA and the ESA both put up a lot of cool stuff and work on a lot of joint missions.

The American civilian manned space program is over for good. America has passed the baton to China. Chinese men and women will explore the heavens.

Who actually created the first proper rockets and who after WW2 went to work for Americans and got them to the moon? and where did he come from?

You know there’s quite a lot of heavens to go around and they’re going to be there for some time could be little early to call that 1

Meanwhile, we have a satellite mapping the moon in detail, a couple of rovers + an orbiter at Mars, a probe visiting dwarf planets in the asteroid belt and another on its way to Pluto. There might be more going on beyond the confines of earth orbit as well, but I'm just not sure off-hand. All while China plans to put humans on the moon like we did over 40 years ago now..

If there was a national emergency, and we focused our efforts we could get back to the moon in a short period of time.

When Kennedy gave his speech about getting to the moon by the end of the decade, we had only accomplished one sub-orbital flight and it was just twenty days before Kennedy's speech to congress.
From that point it only took us eight years to go from one one-manned sub-orbital mission, to putting two astronauts on the moon. We did it due to the fierce competition with the Soviet's brought on of course due to national security of the cold war.

Right now we are no where near returning to manned missions to the moon, but thye country would be capable of doing so if it was deemed neceesary and crucial to thye survival of the country.

My whole point is, is that we have created many of the worlds great inventions, and I just wanted to remind the op that the U.S. is not the trash heep that he seems so intent on proving.
I guess he feels the need to improve his self-importance by bashing others, thus the reason he keeps starting threads such as this.

Look pal, my dad worked for NASA, I don't need a history lesson about Werner Von Braun, I know where he came from and how the German's were ahead of the world with their V2 rockets at the end of WWII.

That's the beauty of America, after winning the war, we captured some brilliant scientists and gave them a home here to continue the study of rocketry and the use in a civilized way. I know all about the the various steps, the rockets that were built, the Redstone, the Atlas, The Titan, the Saturn IB, and then the magnificent Saturn V, that propelled three astronauts to the moon.

I grew up with the whol;e thing, the Mercury program, the Gemini program, and then finally the Apollo program.

And you would know about Nazi's since they came from your neck of the woods.

Good thing America came over and saved your asses.

Don't look pal me, if you cannot be civil then do not post. I was pointing out that the Americans were not the only ones involved in getting to the moon and a very large part of getting there came from German scientists.

I'm sorry, much as I might agree with many points of view put forward by my learned Scottish friend; the premise of the OP is seriously flawed. Quite apart from the fact that Europe is a the geographical region of the Eurasian continent nor-west of the Caucasus mountain ranges, it is not one national entity, as is the United States of America, and therefore does not possess a single recognisable characteristic or personality. But even if it were one giant nation - the premise that Europe is better than the USA, or indeed, that the USA is better than Europe, is not sustainable in logic, nor supportable in fact.

Each region and national entity enjoys its own particular strengths and suffers from its own peculiar weaknesses, so the concept that 'the best country in the world' exists is a childish nonsense.

Particularly so as we each judge what is preferable by means of our individual life experiences and value systems. I am no different in that respect, and despite my admiration for many aspects of US society, it is not a nation in which I would care to live. However, I am sure that many of my American (US) friends would feel similarly about my native land. Neither case is an indictment in itself of the nation concerned - it is merely a matter of individual values, and familiarity, dictating preferences.

If the OP had stated that he preferred European countries to the United States, I would have little objection to that as an opinion. But there are no absolutes by which nations may be judged and ranked. Europe may be legitimately considered to be different from the US in many important aspects, and as far as many of we Europeans are concerned - Vive la difference! Yer pays yer money, and yer makes yer choice - but self-praise is no recommendation.

And they became American citizens, before the space program really got going, so they were Americans who did the job that got America to the moon.

they werent educated in america though, which is probably why they managed to get to the moon. america cant take much credit for that except paying for it, well done you spent the money that got man to the moon excellent. while nobody else was even trying.

2 World Wars in the last 100 years that cost 100 million people their lives and your somehow "better" than America? That's darn comical.

Well duh ! We captured Von Braun and many other German scientists at the end of the war. They were brought to the U.S. and in 1955 Von Braun became an American citizen.

Thats external debt, NOT public debt. Its debt owed to foreign nations and entities. We finance more of our own debt while european nations more rely upon other nations to finance them.
