For years.....Dems fought making them permanent. Now.....In the passing of this recent legislation to avoid the fiscal cliff----there is a silver lining for Republicans. For years, the Republicans have sought to have the Bush Tax Cuts become permanent. And all the while, the Democrats claimed that there WERE no middle class tax cuts; that it all went to the rich! And they refused to help Republicans make them permanent.

Well, the Dems have just saved the Bush Tax Cuts for 99% of the Amercan people; mostly the middle class. They have finally made the Bush Tax Cuts permanent. These tax cuts will forever be called THE BUSH TAX CUTS. They weren't just extended for a certain time period; they were made PERMANENT!! And while it IS sad that the Dems ALSO added $4 TRILLION more to the federal debt with additional spending, there is at least something in this piece of legislation that the Republicans can point to as a win.

    As Arii Fleischer said.....
"For me, this is very much an 'on the one hand, on the other hand thing," said Ari Fleischer, the White House press secretary in the years of Bush's tax fights. "As a Bush loyalists, it's fantastic that the Bush tax cuts, which now have to be seen inarguably as overwhelmingly for the middle class, are being made permanent. On the other hand, this adds $4 trillion to the federal debt."

The other parts of the silver lining for Republicans:
    1) Codified Bush's successful push, in 2003, to make rates on dividends and capital gains equal so that one form of investment is not favored over another.
    2) Let's lapse, the 2% point cut by Obama in the payroll tax----which was supposed to have been short term, but Dems ended up wanting extending over and over again. They lost this fight.
    3) Obama's negotiating prowess has been condemned by many leaders on the left....some claiming he was "clueless" on leverage.

Per Republican Dave Camp of Michigan...."Democrats are finally joining Republicans in making them (the Bush tax cuts) permanet. Republicans and the American people are getting somethign really important, permanent tax relief."

There were a few good aspects to the deal. And of course having the Democrats make permanent tax cuts they had derided for the past decade was sweet.

Also the AMT fix was made permanent. Of course, that alone probably added a trillion dollars to the deficit over 10 years.

Still, considering that Republicans had not a single card to play in this negotiation, it could have been much worse.

    Fiscal Cliff Hangover

Yep, for years Dims fought the Bush era tax cuts. No way would you have ever seen any of them admit that the middle class was helped by the cuts.
Now all of a sudden, if we don't MAINTAIN cuts for the middle class, we're over the cliff, and the economy will suffer and may even put us into another recession.

Can we also call our massive federal debt the "Bush debt problem" since he slashed revenues and raised expenditures at an unprecedented level with two wars and a Medicare expansion?

You can't have it just one way; you know that, right?

    Amen!!!
And they keep accusing Obama of wanting a blank check. Ok, one stimulus, some war extension, Obamacare is revenue neutral, where is all of Obama's terrible spending? Is he to blame for the out-of-control cost of health care?

The democrats have always been for giving tax breaks to, and helping out the middle class. The Bush tax cuts for the rich was a bill designed for the rich, pretending to be for everyone. While it threw the middle class a few crumbs, it bankrolled the snot out of the richest of the rich.

Because of this along with the insane GOP spending, it caused the economy to completely collapse.

And finally as well, the Repubs have admitted that tax cuts must be paid for -- that they do not pay for themselves.

There has been much progress on both sides.

Well making the tax cuts perminent had to be done. The Republican controlled House threatened to cut unemployment benefits, which would have caused millions of people to be unable to pay for basic necessities while looking for work.

Obama just made the Bush tax cuts permanent for the middle class. In other words he admitted that the Bush tax cuts helped the middle class.

You cant even tell me where the money is coming from to pay for the deficit. The new tax legislation only adds $60 billion in new tax revenues per year for ten years. Where are you going to get the rest of the money? You have no idea do you kid?

That's wrong kid. The Bush tax cuts for the middle class are now permanent. You don't even have a good grasp of the facts. That's not something to be proud about. You should be ashamed to be a low information person.

Do you know what math is? The budget deficit is going to be a trillion dollars per year from now on. The tax increases only raise $60 billion per year for ten years. Your math doesn't work pal.

Basic arithmetic should teach you that those who make more money and pay more in taxes will get a bigger break when it comes to taxes.

Leave the economics to those with the breathing for it pal...

You should have watched Rachel Maddow's show on MSNBC where she ran film of the many Repub senators and congressmen who repeated and repeated that the Bush tax cuts would magically pay for themselves. Great show. Great info.

You need a score card to keep track of who is spending America into bankruptcy. Although it did not start with Reagan, he set a record for up to his time, and GW Bush did the same.

A bit of perspective please. Ronald Reagan, George Bush and all other presidents combined over 242 years did nut run up the debt that Barack Obama did in four. Reagan and GW Bush were spending guppies compared to the blue whale Obama. It is real hard to take you seriously when you say such far fetched outlandish things.

No, the income level cut-offs were the same. And $60,000/yr then wasn't rich....just as it isn't rich now.
Bush also placed several million more under the "pay ZERO taxes" column.....which I think was a mistake. Those have now been made permanent. We should NOT have so many people in this country paying nothing in federal income taxes. As Obama says......"Everyone should have some skin in the game." But when he says that.....he's not really referring to "everyone"......only the evil rich that he likes to demonize while playing class warfare.
