Do you consider yourself as being on the left, middle, right, or something else? Nevermind that the definition of both left and right is vague and up for debate, it's about how you define it, and what you feel that you are. Me? I'm a rightist.
I identify as being on the Left. Depending on the definitions of the terms, I could also be "Middle" or on the centre-left.
I don't have a 'consistent' lean, it just depends on the issue. Economically I'm a 'socialist'; productivity levels from the late 1900's to the present have been astronomical, and have made total gibberish out both right wing and left wing economic fantasies, but n the other hand culture matters, and matters a great deal, as does foreign policy, so I'm mainly a 'conservative' on those issues, only because the brie and chardonnay 'left' are mindless fashion victims and ridiculously clueless and out of touch with reality on issues in those areas. The Democratic Party should be classified with all the other virulently racist hate groups, and incessantly promotes racial violence. See the Zimmerman lynching for just one example of their promotion of racist hate crimes and the White House's support of that sort of thing, along with Eric Holder's benign protection of racist groups like the NBP gangs and the like. And then there is their Great Messiah Obama, himself a member of long standing, over 20 years, of a virulently racist 'Church', claiming he never heard a word Wright ever said and never once even read any of the literature in the lobby. I could fill up several posts with examples of the brie and chardonnay pseudo-leftists' war on the working class, traceable from their 'reforms' in the 1980's, especially the 'Super-Delegate' rules change farce, most of which makes the GOP rather tame and staid by comparison. Neo-liberals are far more dangerous than neo-cons and certainly more dangerous than run-of-the mill conservatives and even many far right nutjobs, Anybody who thinks the Democratic Party represents liberalism and humanity issues needs their heads examined. I would also rather hang out with a John Hagee or a Robert Jefress than some PC Nazi assclowns or some evangelical atheist psycho; they're much more socially pleasant and easier to discuss issues with without provoking some incoherent rants and name-calling fests, and they have table manners to boot.
By the actual definitions of left and right as the side of the floor that favored the traditionalist monarchy being the right and the left being the side that favored liberal change I am on the left because I'm a radical libertarian. By the warped definitions used today I am on the right, although I hold radical libertarian social views.
I'm a liberal (by the international an UK definition!), so I'd consider myself to be on the centre left of UK politics, which would be some way to the left of the centre line in the US. The Left/Right model is some what flawed, though, obviously, at the very least without an authoritarian/libertarian axis - I would certainly be on the libertarian side if that were also being considered.
Ten years ago I fit neatly into the definition of a right wing thinker. Today that definition has shifted to something in the middle, as the party that represented my views keeps moving further away from what it once was. Though I hesitate to accept the liberal label, it seems this too has shifted to the point I agree with more those considered "Liberal" say and do, than the new conservative ideal. I never left the GOP....but they no longer want me.
In my opinion the right is a fiction. Everybody is on the left (big government / welfare / increased state control / moral relativism). There is no genuine, credible right wing option.
hmm, well that's not my view of what right is. I think the fundamental difference between the two is that the right likes or don't care about inequality (of outcome), while the left always seeks equality.
Authoritarian Socialist Marxist Liberal, according to the proper and legitimate, U.S.A. definition of my stance. That is far left, or leftist, as opposed to Libertarian or Conservative who are right of center according to official U.S.A. usages, languages, and doctrines of the Left/Right model rule book founded here.
Mostly right (limited govt + no loonytoon left lies & crap) but left when they make sense and could possibly be onto something other than their usual nonsense and the right are the loonies, neither left nor right a good bit when neither make sense, in the middle towards the right many times when all else fails, and back forth between the two if I've had too much coffee, tea, or lack of sleep.
