So we should let people's emotional states during highly irrational times determine the law?

Of the two of us, which one was a junior at Syracuse University the day thirty five of his friends and classmates were murdered?

    It wasn't you.

The evidence was sufficient to get a conviction and a sentence of life in prison, which is supposed to mean "death in prison" in civilized places, not that Europe is civilized. No, he was released for a few billion dollars in oil contracts.

    They do when they're employed.

No honest person can say any state in the US has a capital punishment system that effectively terminates the guilty in a timely manner that would engender deterrence.

No, instead every murdering scum convict that finally gets executed has his own cheer-leading squad of idiots that make sure his crime is glorified, thus encouraging the acts capital punishment is intended to deter and punish.

Since capital punishment exists primarily as a PUNISHMENT (you might note the use of the word "punishment" in the term "capital punishment"), then it's deterrent effect is secondary to the primary purpose, anyway...which is killing the bad guy.

There's nothing wrong with killing the scum of society. The price is already posted, they agreed to pay it when they killed their victims.

That's because they're not reasonable and as far as they're concerned ANY doubt about the guilt of the accused is "reasonable"....using themselves as the measure of reasonableness.

Low Information Voters should not be allowed on juries.

    Interesting chart that.

The homicide rate stopped declining when the United States government stopped deporting illegal aliens, when it began to ramp up the "War on Drugs" and when the states were foolishly expanding their unconstitutional ban on guns.

One needs to also begin considering the effects of the various Three Strikes Laws, which are often, unfortunately, not restricted to violent offenses.

Well said, dude. My sentiments exactly!

Remember the case of 8 yr old Jessica Lundsford(?) in Fla? John Couey, a convicted pedophile, repeat offender waltzed thru the revolving doors of the pen again and this time he snuck into Jessica's home in the middle of the night, dragged her out into his place, kept her stashed in his closet, raped her several times, then buried her alive - and the bleeding heart libs thinks depraved cockroaches like him deserves to live until they die a natural death....

He made sure little Jessica didn't die a natural death, so why should he? When the scum of the earth do that to a child, that should mean they automatically forfeit their own life........

And the Ted Bundys, BTKillers and Green River Killers who are found guilty w/o a shadow of a doubt w/the forensic evidence proving it and many finally admit their guilt, deserves the DP.......

    Yeah, I'm sure you are.....

I don't imagine the parents of the small victim is to thrilled the rapist & murderer of their child gets to live for the rest of his depraved, unnatural life, being supported by their tax dollars.... what do you think?

Yeah, you're right..... I was thinking of a certain poster who's always crying for the criminals, often saying they can be 'rehabilitated'....

Well, as I already said, the Ted Bundys, Jeffrey Dahmers, etc. who have been proven guilty deserve nothing but the DP...

But the problem w/the DP is they still get to live another 20+ yrs b/c of all the appeals they're allowed, despite the evidence against them......

In 2010 there were about 15,000 murders with about 9000 convictions. The recidivism conviction rate for homicide is about 2%. Which is 180 murders a year. THAT IS 180 murders committed by previous murderers. Number of death row executions…43 The number of murders committed by executed murderers …0.

Seems obvious that the death penalty reduces murders.

Round about the time on your chart when the homicide rate stopped decreasing. Gee, anyone reading the Mayor's post could have figured that one out. But maybe some posters are too young to remember the anti-drug hyseria of the 1980's.

Sorry you'll have to do better than that. If you're going to make a statistical connection you'll need to come up with something concrete showing trends. Otherwise you've just pulled this out of your hat and you may as well claim that bird migration patterns impacted murders.

Actually, no, the Mayor is going to conduct himself with his own desires as the guide. Since everyone knows that the US stopped deporting invaders from Mexico in the early 1980's, it's not necessary to document that fact for the ignorant. Everyone also knows that the "War On Drugs" was ratcheted up several notches under the Reagan Administration, so again, it's not necessary to illuminate the issue further. If you're not one of "everyone", then your ignorance is something you need to address on your own time. Since the Mayor is old enough to remember the issues of the time, he's not required to do historical document searches to convince himself of the validity of his claims.

If you're too young to remember those times, then you need to be educated. But don't waste your time implying the Mayor is factually inaccurate here. The tree you're barking up doesn't have a raccoon in it.

Someone sitting in prison for life can appeal.

An innocent person who is executed cannot.

Is it that hard to figure out?

Not that I am aware of.

    - - - Updated - - -

They have appealed. I haven't heard of many capital murder cases where the people who were found guilty did not appeal.

Again, what people are on death row that are really innocent?

So instead of addressing the argument you move to healthcare?

    LOL

Innocent people are executed. Deal with it. Does the death penalty offer a benefit that outweighs the atrocity of the state executing innocent people?

    Absolutely not.

Yes, because they are both going to be run by government.

So you rather someone rot in jail, spending 23 of 24 hours a day locked up in seclusion?
