I tell you any person that gives an influential politician that amount of disrespect needs to look at themselves in the mirror because their ideology is eating their humility away. I agree that when people were all like 'Ted Kennedy is dead huzzah!' are just as bad as the ones that are saying that Margret Thatcher's body should be tossed in the Thames. It's wrong. So wrong. I really hope that ideology doesn't fully stop her from a burial she deserves.

There is a severe difference between saying let the (*)(*)(*)(*)(*) rot in hell/ dump her body in the Thames and saying I hated her because she so and so did this and stood for these ideals. When a politician dies, yes that's a good time to bring up politics but to say mean and degrading things is not discussing politics its allowing your ideals blind you so much that you have zero tolerance for another ideology. There is a line that is being crossed where people are showing just how radical and intolerable they are.

Ya that is nonsense. Lets go to the extreme here to prove the point. When Osama Bin Laden was killed, was it ok to celebrate? How about Hitler? Stalin? Saddam Hussein? Huge Chavez? Castro? How far do you go before you reach the cut off point? Almost everyone would agree celebrating Bin Laden's death is cool. Same for Hitler. Stalin? Probably. Saddam? Again, probably. Chavez? Thatcher? Then people want people to just shut up? Why? It is incoherent. I agree talking about tossing her body in the river is a step too far for my own personal conceptions of decorum, but speaking frankly about her failures is an ABSOLUTE MUST!! Otherwise you get into Orwellian territory where propaganda gets spread unopposed. That is not acceptable either. The truth is serious criticism is great, people with taste should just do it with some level of decorum. I don't want to toss anyone in a river dead or alive, I do want to criticize public figures BOTH dead and alive though.....

    - - - Updated - - -

Fair point. Criticism is often shut down when people die, but I agree criticism(whether people are dead or alive) should have some level of decorum. Otherwise it reflects poorly on you as much as it does on the person you are criticizing.

PS. I honestly feel like criticizing a living person is worse. They are around to hear the criticism. Dead people don't know the difference one way or the other.

Oh dear just because I speak up about one person you don't like doesn't mean that suddenly someone like Hugo Chavez is going to be the exception because I disagree for everything he believed in. My point stands. People on these forums have a nasty habit of not accepting different views. And when someone dies it comes like a cloud of locusts. It's not hypocrisy if what I am saying can be APPLIED on both sides of the argument.

Fair enough. As long as you actually are consistent, you are right.

Government decrees of this sort are issued to honor those who made a positive contribution to the world around them. That leaves the old battle axe out.

You mean this is just another right wing lie thread? Color me surprised.

How do you when a Conservative is lying? Their lips are moving.

Not on this board, nope. I'll bet there were indeed threads about it tough. How much action in the real world, however? Not a whole lot.

Were they organizing parties? Maybe not every critic was holding their fire, but many were.

Hmm. Both are all about making a scene at a funeral in order to squawk their political POV's. I'm seeing far more commonalities than not, actually.

I'll wager that if Hillary dies, you'll see a lot more class from the right than you would from the left if Condoleeza bites it.

But the point of this thread is a public display of affection by sycophants for Thatcher, not whether liberals should say Thatcher is a (*)(*)(*)(*) whose body should be fed to wolves. We can agree that is in bad taste.

Too bad politicians are spineless creatures who will absolutely give Thatcher this pointless display if it actually becomes as issue. Look at the comments that ******** Obama made about Thatcher. She represents everything he is supposed to be against, but he praised her to high heavens. That is what politicians actually do when pushed to it.

She was also hated by millions of Brits whose lives she ruined with her policies. She was incredibly divisive.

Actually, I feel the opposite. A live person can answer or rebut the charges. A dead person, not so much.

    I agree.

Obama is probably just trying to look like a class act even though yes, I know the two are/were at opposite political poles. But I don't see it as sycophantry as rather simply acknowleging the fact that Thatcher and Reagan were allies in the fight against communism and the USSR, she was a friend to the US and we should at least honor that if nothing else. Sycophantry would be suggesting we put her face on Mt. Rushmore or the like.

Since she died, the most requested song on the BBC has been "Ding Dong the witch is dead".
    Isn't that her real testament?

Poll Tax Maggie remains a controversial and highly divisive character amongst Brits

American rightists exploiting the dead lady to indulge themselves in some hollow gesture is a self-indulgence with a diplomatic price.

She betrayed women and feminists, her policies in the bigger picture allowed the big corporations to get stronger and they don't generally like to hire women...Why would Democrats want to honor her

In the smaller picture she was in a high position for a woman, but England is more socialist and leftist so it doesn't mean the same thing as it would in America, such as if Hilary were President as she was prime minister.

Why would you? Under Thatcher unemployment hit a record high and created an underclass of families who are permanently unemployed generation after generation, destroyed the UK's manufacturing sector in favour of a heavily unregulated banking market that alongside their American counterparts emboldened by the Glass-Steagall Act nearly caused "The Great Depression 2: Depression Harder", interest rates shot through the (*)(*)(*)(*)ing roof, poverty rocketed, and her policies set the socioeconomic inequality standards the UK has today. Her entire time in office is basically a refutation of the Tories and everything American conservatives hold true.
Except they didn't. The Soviet Union fell because of internal pressures, not external. That's why the Soviet Union balkanized rather than enacted sweeping reforms across the Republics, NATO never wanted the Soviet Union to break up as it added more players to "the game" and the more players you have the less predictable international strategies become, the Soviet Union was a stabilizing factor and all we wanted to do was get it to reform into a pro-democracy pro-capitalist union that was friendly to the Western powers. Saying that Reagan and Thatcher were responsible for the fall of the Soviet Union is a bit like saying the American Continental Army was the reason the American Revolution was won rather than Britain being more concerned with fighting the French, Spaniards, and Dutch all over the known world on about a dozen difference fronts.

This is so crass.Yes when Lady Thatcher took office unemployment was peaking.
At around 12 %.Under her strict and guided hand it steadily went down.To a low
of 6.9 %. Inflation also peaked at around the time she took office.
Inflation was double digit for years in the late 70's with one quarter having
an 18% rate.Lady Thatcher got it down to where it should be around 4-5%.
She stopped rampant Socialism and took on the Unions who were bankrupting
    the country.

If 6.9% unenployment is so "good" why are the Right still criticising Obama (who has only been in office for 4 and a half years compared to Thatcher's 10) for a figure in the US not all that far off that?

It's amusing watching Americans telling us she was a great PM when they didn't even live under her.

All this says a different story.

Margaret Thatcher took office May 4 1979 when unemployment was 5.3% unemployment peaked at 11.9% in Spring of 1984, five years into her career as PM. Inflation peaked in 1980, dropped off, and the spiked again in 1990, then continue to fall under Labour up until now. And her destruction of "rampant socialism" is why the UK is where it is now, in a triple dip (*)(*)(*)(*)ing recession biting down on ever more and more austerity whilst being ranked as having one of the highest inequality rates of Western Europe.

As far as I'm concerned I'm willing to take my cues from the people across the Pond:

There are many other sources stating the same thing. Facts are facts, the left held up a vote on this.

She saved England. The nation was in turmoil, people couldn't even get electricity because the unions were so strong and people could not afford even power.

those people hated her because she made them get back to work and stop with the cry baby sitting on your ass collecting from the government.

    Breaking news update.

As of the end of business last Thursday, the last day the records were posted online, no one seems to have actually drafted this mythical senate resolution that would honor Thatcher.

    http://thomas.loc.gov/cgi-bin/bdquery/R?d113:FLD010:+@eq+20130411

Apparently the Democrats are still magically blocking a vote on a fictional resolution.

she destroyed the manufacturing and mining industries in GB. Many of those workers never again found employment. The only industry that thrived was the financial industry and it was built on the same house of cards as the U.S. financial industry and became a subsidiary of it.
