Why is something like this considered socially acceptable: ...while something like this is considered "racist"?
I don't consider either racist. If you want to consider a double standard- why would be posting a thread about stopping Atheism be okay but a thread about stopping Christianity not be okay? - - - Updated - - - I am sure that followers of the Giant Spaghetti Monster will get over their outrage at the lack of respect for their beliefs.
Now you are being purposely offensive towards the believers in the Flying Spaghetti Monster....talk about a double standard.....
There is a matter of respecting beliefs...then there is respecting individuals. I have very little respect for people that try to kill someone because he drew a cartoon.....and a similar level for people who get butt hurt because of an imaginary flying noodly monster replacing an imaginary bearded white guy in another stupid cartoon.
Our saucer which art in a colander, draining be Your noodles. Thy noodle come, Thy meatballness be done on earth, as it is meaty in heaven. Give us this day our daily sauce, and forgive us our lack of piracy, as we pirate and smuggle against those who lack piracy with us. And lead us not into vegetarianism, but deliver us from non-red meat sauce. For thine is the colander, the noodle, and the sauce, forever and ever. Ramen. Hail meatsauce, full of beef. The Spaghetti Monster is with you. Blessed are you among sauces, and blessed is the spice from your shaker. Heated meatsauce, monster of taste, pray for us non-pirates now and at the hour of our hunger. RAmen Our pasta, who art in a colander, draining be your noodles. Thy noodle come, Thy sauce be yum, on top some grated Parmesan. Give us this day our garlic bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trample on our lawns. And lead us not into vegetarianism, but deliver us some pizza, for thine is the meatball, the noodle, and the sauce, forever and ever. RAmen.
You don't have a problem with art desecration? The Michelangelo painting is considered one of the most significant works of art in European history, and some dude desecrates it by doodling in a 'spaghetti monster' just because he wants to insult Christians. I guess you'd be cool with burning copies of Homer's Odyssey and Iliad just because they have references to 'gods' or the supernatural.
Had someone climbed up the walls of the cistene chapel and painted over the original....Yeah, I would be pretty pissed.
Are you really claiming that someone drew a spaghetti monster over the Sistine Chapel? Because that is the only way that it could be desecrated.
Oh my bad- I didn't realize this guy had snuck into the Vatican and painted over Michelangelo's masterpiece. Now that would be wrong. I thought it was merely somebody(you?) who had played with the iconic creation scene from the Vatican Chapel(by the way, before some nutjob painted over, I loved it- so sad it was desecrated like that). If you buy a copy of the Odyssey- why would i care if you burned it? I happen to object to burning Bibles, and Torahs and other specifically religious texts because I find that inciteful- but the Odyssey...not so much.
This rather pisses me off. How dare someone doubt that true religious belief that someone has in a unseen, unfeelable, unprovable god- like the Flying Spaghetti Monster or Yahweh.
Heh. Every minister and priest I have ever known would have found that image of the Creation funny, not offensive. Reminds me of a person I knew once who was deeply offended by the bumper sticker "Defend your right to arm bears"
There are for sure people who dont have the concept of laughing at themselves, take themselves and their affairs too seriously. I'd like to think that Jesus, whoever he really was, knew how to do that had a sense of humour.
I've noticed a trend here on PF. Atheists stick to their guns, and keep posting the same facts and evidence over and over. Theists posts and treads become more and more bizarre as the longer a theist is on PF. Just look at this thread and another who is claiming their sister is 'nasty'. Bizarre indeed.
Easy: Christians have given up on literally following the command not to make an image for centuries, which is why you recognize the scene in the first picture. Very many Muslims on the other hand still take it very seriously and are thus more likely to be offended by a comic depicting Mohammed. This is known and thus shows the level of the will to offend is bigger in the second than in the first picture. Racism enters the scene when you mingle a the hate for a certain religion with the hate for people you think look like the certain followers of such a religion (i.e. somehow middle-eastern/asian/foreign). That, paired with a lack of education and severe stupidity, recently ended up in a massacre against Sikh people meeting in their Wisconsin-based temple, to name just one of many islamophobic and racist incidents. Addition: For your notice: I'm a devout Christian and I'm not offended by the Spaghetti/Michelangelo picture in the slightest. It's the latter that troubles me for love of our Muslim brothers and sisters who I as a Christian feel compassion for.
