    Yes... it's very progressive.

Exclusive: Documents Illuminate Ecuador’s Spying Practices

The country where anti-surveillance hero Edward Snowden wants to take refuge spent half a million dollars on an Israeli-made “GSM interceptor” in a deal brokered by a U.S. middleman. Seeking the capacity to “intercept text messages, falsify and modify the text messages” among other tricks.

WASHINGTON — The intelligence agency of Ecuador appears to have sought in recent months to obtain new equipment for a large-scale surveillance, according to confidential government documents obtained by BuzzFeed.
The capabilities sought by Ecuador resemble the National Security Agency practices revealed by Edward Snowden, who is reportedly seeking asylum in the left-leaning Latin American republic.
The Ecuadorian documents — stamped “Secret” — obtained by BuzzFeed appear to show the government purchasing a “GSM Interceptor” system, among other domestic spying tools, and they suggest a commitment to domestic surveillance that rivals the practices by the United States’ National Security Agency that are at the center of a fierce national debate. They include both covert surveillance capacities and the targeting of President Rafael Correa’s enemies on social media. According to the files, SENAIN keeps close tabs on the Facebook and Twitter accounts of journalists, opposition politicians and other individuals, some with few followers.

"Secret" and not Secreto ? it looks like Ecuadorian government speaks English ... and the source is an American owned medium.
American owned = zero credibility .

Honestly, is anybody surprised that Ecuador is giving the middle finger to the U.S.? It's kind of common knowledge that many south american countries are somewhat hostile to the U.S.

Heh. As I'm sure you've noticed, the article was written in English.

Lemme see if I have this straight. If Snowden had taken off with NSA secrets during the Bush tenure, Cheney and Rumsfeld would not have required his extradition? Or they would have bombed China and Russia for not extraditing him? Do you have any idea what you are talking about?

Yeah, that's because in order to declare war on a nation, you need a declaration. We've learned how to get around that little snag. Sheeeit, we don't even need to PAY for wars anymore.

Every country has people they keep that they shouldn't, we have terrorists in the US, terrorists who are wanted for blowing up civilian airliners, who have been convicted of committing terrorist acts in the US by American juries, yet received pardons so they can stay here,

So why is it even news that a guy like Snowden can find refuge?

    Yep. BIG style !

Folks should write to their local Ecuadorian embassy and offer congratulations and support. It costs nothing and it strikes a blow for human rights.

    This isn't an Obama issue.
Regardless of who was in power, the situation would be the same IMO.

So Ecuador cancelled their trade agreements with USA because Americans tried to use them for blackmailing.
How our friends on the other side of the Atlantic cope with the new " screw your money we have our pride" experience?

I could agree, partially, but to view this debacle from "the 40,000-foot level" you need to look at the behaviors and viewpoints of Obama, Putin, and the committee of "mandarins" who rule China.

Obama was unprepared in every way to become President of the United States, period! Familiar only with ward politics in the political septic tank of Chicago, he was conspicuously inadequate to do anything on the international scene but bow and smile. Possibly his biggest first-term blunder, was to cave, unilaterally, on strategic missile defense in Eastern Europe after getting barked at and getting the "new-boy" treatment from Putin.

The second-term has brought scandal after scandal, and when added to the ridiculous, embarrassing spectacle put on by the Obama regime during the latest North Korea nuclear crisis two months ago (carefully crafted in advance and staged by China and NK), the scene was ripe for the next serious challenge to Obama, who had already shown himself to be aloof, remote, and "hands-off" to any situation that didn't involve his continuous pursuit of "social" agendas, trampling the Constitution, and projecting an intrusive Federal government presence where it wasn't wanted.

Re-enter Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin! And here, volumes could be written! His disdain and disregard for Obama have been quite obvious and discussed frequently in European circles. Putin has the cunning instinct of a born hunter and predator, and he can sense timidity, indecisiveness, and incompetence in an adversary. And now, here comes the Snowden situation!

It may be a long time before we know the complete, "sanitized" version of the story, but I would bet my last dime that Putin and his greatly underestimated FSB were right on top of the Snowden affair from the first moment -- and maybe before that. Quite obviously, Putin orchestrated the whole thing with China, and, once again, allowed the Obama regime to make fools of themselves.

Would this have happened to "W" Bush, Clinton, or some other American president? I would argue that it probably would have, but that it would have been handled quietly and quickly, way before so much time had passed. I seriously doubt that it would have happened under Reagan, but any hyperliberal Democrat would give me hell for saying that.

In any event, the game ain't over, and Obama has even more opportunities to make itself look foolish again and again. Putin is watching, waiting, and is certain to make his move. After all, he is the leader of a nation of chess players....

It hardly needed a Presidential Council statement- but it's correct and welcome anyway.
