If you are American you will probably know EXACTLY what I'm talking about. Specifically trash talk shows for me (But I'll allow discussion on trash realitiy TV shows also if you prefer). By the way, I watch them online as in my country such television goes against our codes of morality and censorship. Anyway, I always asked myself why I waste my time on such garbage. The usual answer is because it's entertainment and funny. But I finally figured out another reason: it makes me feel better about myself. Let me explain: when I see such pathetic human trash (I know I'm being cruel) I then reflect on my life and think 'Hey! I did not turn out so bad!' I never did drugs and needed to spend time in rehab. I did not have 11 children with 10 different women. So it makes me feel better about myself and not dwell on my failures in life. My brother told me rather than compare yourself with losers, look at winners and say 'I should do better and be like him/her'. To some extent he is right. But that applies only to people under 25 in my opinion. There comes a time in your life when you begin to understand that this is as good as you will ever get. I will not be President, I will not find a cure for AIDS, I will never be an astronaut and I will never be a billionare. So when I feel that my failures have eclipsed my successes, I just look at those losers on TV and I instantly feel better about myself.
That's the only reason those shows are even on tv in the first place. It's the whole reason why everybody watches them. Personally, I just prefer to enjoy my own life. I'm not really interested in comparing myself to others.
I enjoy watch sports such as Football, Baseball, Hockey, Basketball....and I will watch the Military Channel as I enjoy old Cold War stories as I have been apart of some myself. LOL!! A good movie to escape is always enjoyable and I especially enjoy 50's, 60's and 70's era Sci-Fi/Horror such as the Original Alien....Soylet Green....Twilight Last Gleaming...The Day the Earth Stood Still...Planet of the Apes....and I have to admit those 1950's B Movies such as Creature from the Black Lagoon....The Blob...Praying Mantis....It Came from Outer Space...etc...are very fun for me to watch. TV...can be fun and useful to relieve stress but it really becomes a disservice to people when either the Extreme Right or Extreme Left take control of a channel and spread ideologically driven DISINFORMATION as the NEWS should be just that...THE NEWS....and any OPINIONS should be labeled...OPINIONS. Hmmm......might someone be able to show me where one can pick up a big box of "Gay"? (or any size really. I mean, some folks really don't need extra, right?) Moving on! To the OP: Totally get it! Can't stand shows like "Real Housewives of__________" or "Hollywood Husbands and the Sharpies Who Snipped their Balls!"---but oh man.....I can't get enough of, shows like "Hardcore Pawn" (set in Detroit) or Hardcore Pawn:Chicago. My Sweetie calls it my "pawn porn" Most of the time, it's just a chance to totally empty my mind----just taking a break from anything of redeeming value, at all, entering into my head....and after a bit, I snap too....& promptly go watch something really bad-ass or informative like.....(Burn Notice/Bad Ass-----Intentional Talk/Informative)

lol well that's one way to look at it. Personally I can't bring myself to watch those kinds of TV shows because I quite literally feel embarrassed for them. It makes me feel so uncomfortable to watch those people. Maybe I have too much empathy... If I am going to watch TV I prefer TV shows that have some kind of storyline and plot in it. The Walking Dead, Dexter, American Horror Story, Orange is the New Black, etc.
You embarassed that they are human beings like yourself when really they should be sea slugs? Honestly though why would you not have a good laugh at two unemployed men with missing teeth fight for the approval of a particularly large sow? lol I make this stuff up as I type!
The only decent 'trash show' on is the Steve Wilkos show - even if a lot of it is possibly be 'fake' or 'dramatized' it's at least remotely convincing, and Steve does present a positive moral message. Shows like Jerry Springer or Maury are so blatantly fake or reinacted that it's not even trying to be convincing or serious, just 'junk food for the brain' and watching rednecks having staged fights on TV. Dr. Phil is boring and Phil himself doesn't add anything to the show - he's basically just a generic 'host', and the only time the show is remotely interesting is when it has interesting guests, he adds nothing to the show.
The journey is more fulfilling than the actual accomplishment. Failure is often the only road to success.
I've never been a big fan of reality shows. Most of them devolve into pointless (*)(*)(*)(*)(*)ing and arguing over nothing. However, I used to like American Idol back in the day when Simon used to be on there and when they used to give all the hilarious idiots more airtime during the auditions. Nowadays, I like watching those fail clips on Youtube. It always makes me feel good knowing I'm not the one who's balls got squished while trying to skateboard down a rail.
I rarely watch TV, unless there is a real good new Sci Fi movie on PPV or a classic SciFi , or maybe a western. I work on the computer so it takes up most of my time for electronic entertainment. I used to watch the science channel and others like the history channel but they have too much misinformation posing as truth. The reality shows have nothing to do with reality so whatÂ’s left, the news? lol, No thanks. reva
