So is Americanism, but we like that one. Everybody has an ideology, people just hate the one that is opposed to theirs.

Anyway, we had our Manifest Destiny, the Brits had their Empire of The Sun and little Israel has its Zionism. Sure, those that get screwed hate(d) those concepts, but we like(d) them and were/are proud.

Idiotic hatred as evidenced in your post is how wars begin. Congratulations. What a dumb post.

You want to define patriotism? Or is it a blind allegiance; my country, right or wrong, sort of thing?

Its hard to describe a love of "Mother Russia" or doing something "For God and Queen" or "America!". Most often, an ex-pat immigrant can't grasp a love for their mother land or their new country.

Perhaps a feeling of "I am of this land. These are my people. I will defend until death my land and people if need be." describes it best.

From what I have been able to work out UK Jews are advanced in their criticism of Israel to the US. The community is becoming quite divided as on the one hand, the Traditional Jewish societies support Israel more and more extremely and on the other Jews who were Zionists have become antizionists or are only just holding on supporting Israel while praying it will change.

The UK seems to have got in later with the pro Israel that the US got into in the 1960's after the 7 day war. Seemed to take up to around 2000 for them to start following everything Israel did along with calling those who did not agree self hating and so on.

Of course lots of British people of Jewish descent do not follow Judaism nor are they part of the 'Jewish community'. The Labour Leader Ed Miliaband is one of them, though Dad was anti zionist and Mum is apparently a member of Jews for Justice for Palestinians http://jfjfp.com/

To some extent it is political, more left wing and with a social conscience finding support for Israel's actions increasingly difficult but at the same time adolescents becoming appalled when they attend student meetings and find out what Israel is up to. Hence you get the argument from Traditional Jewish societies that to allow such talk is antisemetic simply because it does not say what they want. That has been a problem in the UK since the EU working Definition on Antisemitism which chose to call anything which ever could be antisemitism, antisemitism. The EUWD has now been largely thrown in the bin where it deserves to be and we are returning to free speech on the subject - tricky though, a lot of it has sunk in, I am maybe being optimistic.

As far as I have been able to gather US Jews became extremely proud and pro Israel after 67 when it became 'cool' to be a Jew and although there is now a blossoming critical US Jewish view on Israel I think it has far more timidity than British Jews who have banded together and told traditional structures they can (*)(*)(*)(*) off if that is their point of view.

I also see that young American Jew are not all that interested in remaining within the song, if you will and have no particular interest in Israel and are just as likely to marry a non jew as a jew.

There are though strong social justice Jewish organisations in the US and I think they and similar European are coming together.Living in societies with equal rights for all and more or less lack of prejudice makes it hard for many Jews to support Israel and I imagine in time this will grow.

Good post.. I tend to agree that Zionism isn't a driving concern for young American Jews.

Thank you. I was reading some material by some of the critical US Jews a while ago. They wanted people to stop describing a person as pro or anti Israel but instead to speak of values. Was Israel acting in a way which supported their values,? Was she acting in a just way which offered equal rights to all? - if not how could they support that. If they were expected to continue to support Israel, they said, then she needed to act in a way which their conscience could support. Actually I am not sure I got that right. They wanted the right to be fiercely critical of Israel where she is acting in a way they could not support but the reason for this fierce criticism was care. They hoped they did not have to lose that care.
