A McDonald's employee working overtime for nearly four months straight would make as much as the company's former CEO earned in just 60 minutes, according to an analysis published Tuesday.

The analysis, compiled by the financial information company NerdWallet, assumes the average salary of a McDonald's hourly worker is $7.73, based on information from self-reported salary site GlassDoor.com. Official figures on McDonald's worker pay aren't publicly available, but the median wage for fast-food workers overall is $8.90 per hour.

By comparison, former McDonald's CEO James Skinner raked in $9,247 for an hour of his precious time last year, according to NerdWallet. (The analysis focuses on Skinner and not current CEO Donald Thompson because full data on the latter's salary isn't publicly available yet.)

That means the average McDonald's employee would have to work for 3.86 months straight at an overtime wage -- or 1.5 times her regular hourly pay -- to match what Skinner made in an hour, according to NerdWallet.

“A lot of these companies are paying minimum wage or very slightly above that, and the disturbing fact is that even if a worker works 40 hours a week for a month, they’re never going to get close to what the CEO makes for one hour alone,” said Dana Lime, a senior analyst with NerdWallet and the report's author, in an interview.

Flipping burgers is not a valuable skill. Managing a business is. This is the difference.

the wealth gap in hourly wage is not justified by this fact

    - - - Updated - - -

good point - which is why i DON'T buy from McDonald's or Burger King or the likes ;-)

but i gotta ask, does it really not bother you that these people are working for below-poverty wages ? just from an empathy standpoint, why are you so unwilling to give them, say, a barely livable $10/hr ?

You act like i write their paychecks. Is this another thread that is going to be abou the posters and not the topic?

Then again our definition of poverty is subjective. Ask the poor in Thailand or Hati what they think of our "poverty".

And they have nothing to do with each other.

Each franchise chooses wages from what I have read. Is this a fish story to make someone's out to be an Eeeeevil Capitalist?

Because working at these type of jobs isn't mint to make you wealthy, It is designed to teach you the skills of working: being on time, wearing a uniform, handling customers, working with co-workers.

Really? Can you justify ANY wage gap? I can't wait to hear this.

And after your best effort, I will destroy it.

Jesus just give the people $10.25 an hour.

Then fire every single person who says a peep about it afterwards. I don't care what anyone "thinks" they "deserve". Working the drive thru window at mcdonalds is a minimum wage paying job and thats what it should pay, whatever minimum wage may be. I have no problem with minimum wage being adjusted to compensate for inflation. I have a problem with the fry guy thinking he somehow has done something to earn more than that.

They're free to take their skills elsewhere if they don't like the pay at McDonald's. Nobody is forcing them to work there.

    The real question is...

"How valuable is the CEO, how hard would he be to replace, how many others could do his job?"

Then ask the same of the person taking money at the drive thru window.

You'll understand the wage differences then.

My family comes from a 3rd world country so i have witnessed poverty that no one should imagine - but being raised here in the US, we need to hold ourselves to higher standards. You are setting the bar low by comparing our poverty to that of Haiti.

It's like justifying a woman getting groped at a party and saying, "hey, don't complain cause it's not rape"

    - - - Updated - - -

how is it wealthy to make $10/hr and be barley above the poverty level - which is what they're righting for ?

When one has to lie to make their point, they've already lost the debate.

yes it does.... anyone can flip a burger, not everyone can run a business

I work 60 hours a week teaching.... cops work 40 hours, then pick up security jobs on top of that.... your "below poverty" is based on a min wage worker working 40 hours a week. Get a second job and suppliment your income if flipping burgers for 40 hours a week isn't making enough money.

there will be a consequence to those who lack empathy - the rubber band can be stretched only so far.
historically, it's nothing new - it's called exploitation. the "let them eat cake" attitude often loved by the fascists and dictators
