    Red Alert 2!

I single handedly whooped the Soviets ass all by myself. Something JFK, Nixon, AND Johnson couldn't do.

Damn being an Admiral, I should be (*)(*)(*)(*)ing President right now.

    Admirable call, Admiral!

This would seem to be your problem. The American people elected the President twice, but no one ordained him. Once you grasp that reality, you may be able to move along to greater comprehension, and find yourself at home in a democratic society.

If you are aware of any member of either party on the House Committee on Foreign Affairs, or the Senate Committee on Foreign Relations, all of whom are kept well-informed regarding such matters, who has expressed objection to the the US Navy presence in the Asia/Pacific region, the mission of the Cowpens, or the reaction to the near-collision reported, please provide a link to such criticism.

Inveterate President-hating pantywaists continually getting their frillies in a bunch can hardly be taken seriously until their is substantive adverse assessment from responsible and knowledgeable sources.

Didn't anybody read the damn article but me?

'The American warship -- which U.S. officials say was in international waters -- was approached by a Chinese Navy ship. The smaller vessel peeled off from a group of Chinese Navy ships that included the carrier Liaoning.'

So it was shadowing the Chinese new carrier and collecting intel on it. This goes on all the time, and has since the 60's when not a US carrier battle group left port without a Soviet 'fishing trawler' in tow. And there were similar incidents then, too.

This "shadowing" is all part of the game, and a big part at that.
I've only been in the Persian Gulf once. We rode the anchor there for awhile in support of the USS Carl Vinson battle group. We got there before the Vinson. There were a pair of what I thought were fishing boats about 3 or 4 miles from us, just hanging around. Tuna were migrating at the time, so it made sense.
When the Vinson arrived, her C.O. put out a message that came over our 1MC. He basically said that the presence of our Capital Ship established the area as US waters, and anything within 8 NM had a few minutes to disappear, or be fired upon. Those "fishing boats" made 45 knots before he was done talking.
Back on pg. 2, someone said that China is #1, and has been for some time. Huh?
They have a $6 trillion economy for a nation of over 1B people. We have a $17.7 T economy with a population of around 330M. How does that work out? We are the ONLY country on earth that has ANY aircraft carriers that have launch AND recovery capability, and we got 10 of 'em, with 3 more coming. We're developing new naval weapons that the Chinese can't oppose. Rail guns (http://www.onr.navy.mil/Media-Center/Fact-Sheets/Electromagnetic-Railgun.aspx) and free electron lasers. More conventional lasers have already been used to shoot down drones and mortar shells. If we can further perfect laser accuracy, we may very well negate any and all developments by anyone in missile technology. Maybe we already have. I don't know that much about it.
The top 3 air forces on earth are ours. The top everything is ours.
The real problem these days is economic viability, but the whole world is in the same fix, in one way or another.
I think there is a big conflict in the making, but no-one can beat us for military might.

True, if we got in a war with China and we went all in the way we did in WWII , we'd whip the (*)(*)(*)(*) out of them.

I would imagine not. The captain actually had to make a decision and take responsibility.

All you have to do is find things to criticize Obama for.

No, it's his persistent failure in making appropriate decisions. Arab Spring, fail, Syria, fail, Egypt, fail.

I'm sorry, being a president doesn't mean you can just sit on your butt all day there and idle through everything and you are gonna be fine, no, being a president means you must make tons after tons of tactical and strategic decisions and you ARE GOING TO MAKE THEM RIGHT.

You start thread after thread- what 1 or 2 a day- all criticizing Obama.

Frankly this is just another of your daily threads. Of course there is nothing wrong with you criticizing Obama.

But this is just a topic for you to use to criticize him- like i said before- if it had turned out differently, you would be criticizing Obama for that too.

Humiliating? Absolute nonsense, we played these same games with the Soviet Navy for decades.

I think they made the right move. No sense colliding and losing good personnel to send some kind of message.

And of course I'm right....I defeated China in C&C Generals...more than once. :eyepopping:

Folks on this board appear to be unaware of a few little things.
First, it has next to nothing to do with who was Prez at the time. A man doesn't gain qualification to command a Guided Missile Cruiser without having attended big training in regards to the rules of engagement. At that, he had to be in contact with his fleet commander. More likely, there were a whole bunch of higher ups, watching the whole thing via video link and telling him what to do.
For years now, we've had this policy in Afghanistan where our guys can't fire unless fired upon. Even with that precedent in place, I doubt that the ship would be authorized to fire upon the Chinese until and unless evasive measures had failed. We've been working on that idea for a very long time. The Vulcan guns are intended to intercept and destroy incoming fire, and they've been around for over 20 years. We have some lasers on some ships now that serve the same purpose, with more and better in development. I think it would be better than sinking a ship if we were forced to demonstrate that the Chinese simply don't have a missile, torpedo, or ultimatum that can touch us.

    Desperate deflection attempt, duly noted.

    TERRORIST ATTACK vs MILITARY CONFRONTATION.

    Yeah..those are the 'same".

So are people suggesting that the Captain should have held his course and collided with a Chinese ship?

    I mean, seriously?
